Only 10 day s away but will it be a damp squib? Japanese people don't want it, Covid rife but it starting.  Power of the IOC.

I predict a damp squib. Think the no crowds thing will really kill it. Probably will still be glued to it for the 3 weeks though

Of course it's going ahead. It's all about the money. To hell with the pandemic and people's health.

This Olympics may be the high point of the IOC. They are really tearing the arse out of it in a country in a the midst of a pandemic.

the delayed and restructured event will prove beyond question that the five-ring circus of the Olympics can be scaled back. The number of non-athlete attendees has been slashed by more than two-thirds, from 141,000 down to 41,000, with the exclusion of sponsors, dignitaries and other hangers-on. If Japan can nonetheless deliver a successful Olympics, it will show other cities what is essential and what is not, giving them leverage to demand a smaller event in future. "I believe that we have been provided with an opportunity to look again at what the Olympics are about," says the JOC's Yamashita. "I think that is the significance of Tokyo 2020."

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2021/07/18/six-team-gb-athletes-coronavirus-isolation-tokyo-olympics/
Team GB's Olympic plans have been thrown into disarray by news that six track and field athletes, two athletics staff members and two headquarters staff members have been forced to isolate in Japan after they were identified as close contacts of positive Covid cases.

All are now shut inside their rooms at Team GB's preparation camp hotel in Yokohama or the Olympic Village, with the athletes unable to train less than a week from the start of the Tokyo Games.

The eight-strong athletics contingent were identified as close contacts after someone unconnected to Team GB on their flight to Japan on Thursday was found to have Covid. The British group all tested negative on arrival and have continued to do so every day since, but they remain in isolation as per Tokyo Games guidelines.

Why is there 35000 at the open today
10000 at Silverstone
45000 at Wembley yesterday for rugby league final
Not to mention last Sunday all over England from morning to night

I think some of that is crazy as well. But flying people from all over the world to a village in Tokyo seems like a super spreader event that could be avoided. Many won't be vaccinated.

Pat Hickey wouldn't have many takers for buying tickets this time around.
