I wonder, Polish & Lithuanian Catholics who make up a significant increase in the Catholic population moved to what they believed to the UK, so they may remain loyal to the country they believed they moved too, as oppose to those who moved to the Republic and consider themselves alligned with Ireland. I reckon (hopefully wrongly) than alot of the new Catholics are pro-British votes.

Like the Italian Catholics before them? The Poles and Filipinos tend to use CCMS schools, live in nationalist area and marry into the Catholic community. Odds are those that stay will assimilate as the Italians did.

Dont necessarily agree with this...I know where I am from they are as likely to go to non-ccms schools such as integrated primary's etc and live in any area. I think they are more likely to live where they can afford and send their children somewhere where they are being catered for rather than make those kind of decisions based on religion.

GAA Discussion / Re: Armagh v Derry, Ulster SFC
October 27, 2009, 01:21:19 PM
I think it's a good draw for both sides.....both teams will know they will have to play well to win.
Derry at home I dont think will be a major advantage as Armagh will have a new manager which usually means the first game or two the players lift themselves even more.

If either team has aspirations of winning ulster I think this half of the draw is perfect preparation for a final.

It's impossible to even half predict the outcome as Derry will have some new personell as will Armagh and the league will probably be used to get those new players up to speed.
I hope Derry can do it, but a lot will depend again on injuries as we have seen this year we struggle when any of our first choice players are missing.

goody
boxty
cally

Proper Irish food

Deadly!!

Also: Bacon, turnips and spuds
Bacon and cabbage...and spuds
Mackerel cooked on the tongs with a feed of spuds and a raw onion
Gorra bui (beastings from a cow boiled up)
Cally with spring onions cut up (Ya know the summer is on the way when ya have this!)

And of course beef and Guinness pie :) This Aussie wan was asking me the other day did we eat beef and Guinness pie all the time in Ireland so I told her the truth....the recipe died out with the last Leprachaun!

My God. Giorra BuĂ. Seriously. I heard of people eating beastings/colostrum fried or boiled but assumed it was poverty food and not from choice. Have you eaten the stuff? At least it would prevent you from getting white scour for a while. The rest of the stuff is great fare.

:D  :D
I cant believe anybody would eat that.....

Jesus not another of these threads. Usually started by some hungry hoor.

What was the top ten on Ultimate Ulster then? No doubt it was the 6 county fry?

From what I remember

(nothern) Irish Stew
Champ
the fry
Chinese curry
Italian food
sea food
Steak (#1)

forget the rest.

Since when was Chinese curry and Italian food.. traditiona irish food?

True story...I was once in Chicago for work and some of the people I was working with insisted on taking us out to an authentic Irish bar in some suburb or another for food. The bar was called Peggy Kinanes (or Piggy Kinyans if you were a russian taxi driver) and was actually very nice and owned by an ex-pat from Kilkenny. On the menu they had a Full Irish, Irish Stew, Cod and Chips...all the usual suspects. But right at the end of the menu they had "Curry Chips....a traditional Irish favorite". I got speaking to the owner and said to him about the Curry Chips and he says..."sure everybody eats curry chips on the way home from the pub".
Couldn't argue with that.

General discussion / Re: Most unusual job you ever had
August 25, 2009, 11:23:48 AM
I worked for two full summers in the turf...6 days a week...killer.
Then I went into business for myself and cut my own turf...did a bit of door to door turf sales around Ballyclare, Glengormley and the like...most of them didnt know what turf was until you told them it was cheaper than coal. You could get twice the price around there for a bag of turf than you could around home.
I've also cleaned out cattle-houses...power hosing. Talk about a messy job.
I worked for a number of years in a factory making DIY garden sheds....crap work but the craic was good.
Worked in a timber yard for a summer stacking various sizes of timber coming off a sawmill...sounds easy but it was the hardest job I ever did.

QuoteTyrone are still going to be a good team, but It's hard to see them winning another AI soon. Their leaders were all taken off yesterday, Dooher, McGinley, Gormley and we've probably seen the best of them. I think probably the only possible retirements will be Dooher and McGinley but even at that I think that it will be impossible to replace them in the short term. Ulster will be wide open next year....but Cork could well be the new dynasty in footballing terms.

Cork were brilliant yesterday, Tyrone were terrible.  Beat by 5 points was it?  Hardly a mauling.  I can't understand how people come out and fire names off randomly regarding retirements etc.  Sure Colm Cooper should have retired before the Dublin game too should he have not?  I think Dooher will call it quits and Collie Holmes, but the majority of the rest will stay.  Enda McGinley is a brilliant athlete and footballer, and has only came back from a bad injury and as a result doesn't have his best game - hardly a call for retirement expecially considering his age and previous.  Tyrone would have been a different animal yesterday if McGinley and Sean Cavanagh had been 100%, but they weren;t and Tyrone were beaten by the better team on the day.  I don't see how Cork will start a footballing dynasty either, their key players are getting on a bit and its not like they have dominated underage football.  I hope Mickey Harte stays on but he needs to freshen things up personnel wise.  The only comment anyone would have against Harte is that he appears to be too reluctant to bring new players through instead of relying on players he has had faith in for years.  There is lots of talent within the county and there has been multiple All Ireland Minor, Hogan Cup, Vocational Schools winning sides that have produced top class players.

I think you misunderstood a bit about the retirements. I was trying to highlight that there wont be retirements and that possilbly the only players to retire would be Dooher and McGinley. I'm not saying they should or have to, just that IMO these are the only players who might possiby retire. So dont get your knickers in a twist!

As for Cork with nothing coming through....they have been in 4 of the last 6 all irelan U21 finals. They must have something coming through.

Cork were by far the better team yesterday and fully deserved the win.
Barring Steven O'Neill (probably the best forward in the country) Tyrone lost every single individual battle.
I think Cork wanted it more on the day but they also have a very big talented team. IMO Cork will win the AI. Not because they beat Tyrone, but because they are the best team in the country.

Tyrone are still going to be a good team, but It's hard to see them winning another AI soon. I thought the Constant Gardener was a terrible film...very slow and depressing.
I watched Babel last night with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. I thought it was excellent.
Watch High School Musical if you don't like movies dealing with depressing issues.

In contrast I thought Babel was self-indulgent shit. Trying too hard to be profound I'm afraid.

Its hard to beat teenagers singing and dancing....I love a good musical!
I cant see how you though Babel was any more self-indulgent than Constant Gardener?
I thought the story in Babel was good, and the acting very good.

Sorry to hear about your Da, from experience I know initial shock is devastating.
A year does seem ridiculous to get results....I wouldnt stand for that myself.
This type of cancer though is touted as being the best one to get (maybe not the best way of putting it) but it is the most curable form. My Da was diagnosed on his 50th birthday and after steriod treatment and radiotherapy has been all clear for about 6 years now. He still gets regular check on the PSA level in the blood which can go up and down but as its monitored regularly it means an future treatment required should be given at the earliest possible opportunity.

Another thing to remember is that it is a very slow progressing illness. My Da was just sent for a random routine check as he displayed no symptoms...and he was told when diagnosed that he might not have had symptoms for another 10 years. So I know it's now comfort, but in the year it took to get test results there should have been very little progression of the disease (well at least that's my laymans understanding anyway).

Hope it all works out.

The worse defeats are based on expectations going in, it can be crushing.

For me it was the '94 defeat by Down in Celtic Park...it signalled the end of the late Eamon Coleman's tenure of the Derry team and with it all hope of a second deserved all-ireland for that team.

The worst day for me was against Galway in 2001. I didn't have any expectations going there other than defeat but when we were winning so well mid-way through the second half I started to dream of a glorious victory.
That was our best ever chance of an All Ireland since 93 but it wasn't to be and the last ten minutes were a horrible time if you were a Derry fan.

Galway fans even said after the game that they couldn't believe they had won and that they didn't deserve it but it was no consolation. We were like cats on the way home. We nearly fought outside Slane and one boy got out to walk home.

I did consider that one myself but I thought the loss of Coleman and the small defeat to the eventual all-ireland winners after some anonymous player scored a goal against us just edged it for me.

Star Trek is a thrill ride from start to finish, im a big Star Wars fan and loved some of the Trek movies especially undiscovered, and first contact.

I went with a mate who hates spaceship movies as he calls them, but he enjoyed it. The story is fun and fast paced, one of girls on the bridge is super hot, great special effects aswell, how good were the actors playing spock and kirk, fair play. JJ Abrahams can do no wrong it seems.

Watched Pineapple express last night aswell, cracking show, ridiculus scenarios but hilarious stuff :D.
I thought pineapple express was one of the most boring 'comedies' i've ever seen, maybe i'm getting too old for that type of thing anymore, but i don't remember one mildly amusing moment.

I thought Pineapple Express was terrible too...and I agree with everyon on The knowing.
Been a while since i've seen a really good new film, though I dont get to the cinema too often.
Has anyone seen the 3rd Underworld film? Liked the first 2, but the fact that Kate Beckinsale isnt in the 3rd has put me off a bit.
