I know there's a classic youtube thread already but that's for short, funny clips and there's lots more substantial stuff on youtube so I wanted to create a thread for that. Also it hits -30 in the winter here so I'll be spending a fair bit of time indoors.

This is a brilliant, moving documentary about Canadian police and how they treated drug addicts in their community with kindness and respect and actually got results too. It's called Life through a blue lens.

This is a short, interesting one about Ryan Leaf, the unfortunate NFL player who went second in the draft after Peyton Manning.

The Wet house. A documentary about chronic alcoholics living in a hostel where they're allowed to drink. Rough but fascinating. And a few Irish lads proudly flyig the flag of course.

Dylan Moran, stand-up live in Sydney. Class.

John Sweeney's BBC documentary about scientology. There's a scientologist called Tommy Davis who is some piece of work. He needs to be seen to be believed.

I'm off work for the next week and feeling lazy so if anyone knows of any cracking documentaries or shows out there please post a link to them.

Would be nice if you could get decent internet speed. Lucky to able to watch youtube.

Watched a great doc on the NFL Draft 2006 called Two Days in April, compelling viewing of several lower profile stars and their efforts to make the pros.  Its crazy to think margins such as .1 second on a 40 yard sprint could be the difference between making it or not...

Ironically they are also mentored on their media relations, bearing in mind this is from 2006 its an issue the NFL have been well aware needs addressing (although the recent scandals are a different kettle of fish).

Also watched documentary on Pixar Animation on Netflix.  Shows their early struggles and how much effort was put into Toy Story.  Steve Jobs could spot potential a mile away...
I tend to think of myself as a one man wolfpack...

It is brilliant in fairness, if anyone hasn't seen it. I (like most Galway people) know it off by heart.

Ethan , that Two Days in April doc, any idea where I'd get it?

I had that problem myself for a while.  What worked for me in the end is that netflix allows you to reduce the picture quality and therefore reduce stalling/buffering.  If you haven't already tried that, worth a shot.

If you're into Australian politics there's a great biopic of Bob Hawke:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aaLCDC5_iQ

Doesn't portray Keating in a very flattering light, but it's a good insight into Hawke and the personal and family dramas he went through. Shows you the kind of personal sacrifices you have to make if you want to go for the top office.

If you like University Challenge there's a nice documentary about it and the history of the show:

Interesting to see how it's evolved. Bamber Gascoigne still looks fairly fresh too. A likable sort of chap.

Here's a channel full of documentaries:
https://www.youtube.com/user/HistoryEmpire4/videos

There's an American-made one in there about Afghanistan from 1982, bemoaning how the Russians violated the sovereignty of this nation with a rich heritage.

It's amazing how much video is out there for free now. I've cancelled my Netflix for a while to save a bit of money. The selection was crap anyway.

The only thing about documentaries is they can be a bit hit-and-miss. American-made docs tend to be a bit repetitive, telling you the same thing over and over again, they seem to be all about style rather than substance.  British or Australian docs are a lot more informative.

Some American documentaries are very trashy, America's toughest prisons and all that sh!te. They all seem to have that same dramatic voiceover guy who sounds like a trailer for a Steven Seagal movie. They lose all credibility straight away and must be aimed at morons (I'm a halfwit but not a complete moron).

Some good links there to check out. I love a day on the sofa free of work, obligations and commitments. I would never pay for something like netflix with so much free stuff out there. If it's not on youtube, you ca usually get it off piratebay.

I'm binge-watching The Prisoner now. It's on a service called Crackle. Free content with commercial interruptions.
