As noted on the modern music thread, not all the old stuff was good, although the average was better than the present.

RTE have a programme with a sting operation with some councillors offering to help for a generous contribution.

Fair play to RTE for doing the legwork here.

General discussion / Who do you resemble?
April 23, 2015, 10:28:17 PM
Go to Google images https://images.google.ie/
click on the camera icon, upload a head and shoulders of yourself, see who you resemble.

I'm not sure if this algorithm is much use, with different pics I get quite different results, including Obama, John Major, Bill Clinton, Kim Jong-Un, Sammy Wilson, Michael McGimpsey and frighteningly Jimmy Saville and Eddie Hobbs.

It seems that these people look like me, so now you know

Fair play to the Gardai for getting a conviction of Graham Dwyer.

If you are going to murder someone, sending a lot of text messages about your wish to do so is probably not the best idea, no phone is anonymous.

General discussion / Traffic in Enniskillen
January 17, 2015, 10:11:05 PM
I have to go to a funeral in Sligo on Monday monring, which will entail traversing Fermanagh east to west. What's the traffic like in Enniskillen at bit after 9am, if I come from the Maguiresbridge side? How long to go through the town? I could aim for Derrylin without passing through Enniskillen, but lesser roads might be icy on Monday morning.

Cavan people, wealth is on its way!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tests at a site in Cavan show it's likely to be suitable for mining gold.

Irish mining company Conroy Gold says an independent structural study carried out by geologists at its Slieve Glah gold target have returned positive results.

The study shows the area is associated with a major geological structure, the Orlock Bridge Fault, which could contain gold mineralised faults.

The site is located around 40 kilometres to the south east of the Conroy Gold's proposed mine at Clontibret.

General discussion / 6 county corporation tax
December 03, 2014, 06:17:08 PM
It seems that the 6 counties might get some sort of deal on the Corporation tax provided that they do a deal otherwise and reorganise the finances.
I'm not sure of the details of this, but it will require some maturity from the folks on the hill and that would be very welcome.

If it works, it makes the 6 counties more like the rest of the country and so helps remove the economic basket case issue from the border debate.
If it doesn't work because of limitations set by London etc it illustrates the limitations of the present constitutional setup.

General discussion / Albert Reynolds RIP
August 21, 2014, 10:02:58 AM
I think this deserves a thread of its own, given the importance of the deceased to the peace process.

Albert Reynolds did a great deal to bring about the conditions for the 1994 ceasefire, which set the wheels in motion that led to any subsequent progress. This concentration on the peace process probably distracted him from other issues and may well have contributed to his short tenure as Taoiseach.

He was a businessman, he did great work in the previous decade in bringing Irish telecoms into the modern era in part because he realised the important to business of this. I imagine that had he continued to have influence in more recent years that he would not have been so quick to build an economy on people building and selling houses to each other, but might have shown some concern for the real economy and so limited the damage caused by speculators.
