General discussion / Re: Brexit.
« on: May 07, 2021, 04:23:15 PM »
I'm sure Hartlepool has had an MP in some shape or form for a lifetime but this constituency is only on the go since the 1970s.

They would have lost seat in the last election only the Brexit party refused to stand aside as they thought they'd a real chance, they did but split the vote and Labour got returned. The result is not unexpected no matter what the Tory press say, but it is a sad indictment of  the state (& perhaps decline) of the Labour Party and the continued rise of English Nationalism under the Tories.

The continual bickering with the EU is a Tory tactic too, it keeps that Brexity conflict flame flickering.

Labour are effectively a centre right party now with a millionaire Sir as the leader.

Not much appeal there for working class voters, they are now just effectively Diet Tories under the leadership of Starmer.

Starmer's background is as working class as they come - father being a toolmaker. Worked hard and made a success of himself, an example to anyone from his upbringing. No comparison between he and the gilded, entitled, public-school attending Tory elite. Whatever his shortcomings are as a party leader, he comes across as a decent, conscientious politician, unlike the incompetent and mendacious charlatans now populating the Tories since BJ shunted the calm and level-headed Remainers from the party.

I too think he's decent and conscientious but he does seem a bit airy fairy on some topics and whilst he cuts Boris a new arsehole every PM's Questions he doesn't instill a fighting spirit within the party and evidently appeal to the working class masses.

The Pro Boris media treat him like the grey man that used to be the moniker of John Major.

Kate O Connell not running in the by election, doesn't feel she has a chance of been the FG rep. I suppose thats happens when you isolate yourself by dissing your boss, dissing your party in public, making up stories, being a total un-regulated mouth-piece & bitch to your colleagues.
Maybe she can join the far left, people before profit crowd, but they smell to bad & probably don't own their own property. Nothing in common there. So who can confused Kate join?

Bet you a lump of turf she was bullied out?

Aye!! Traffic light disco ffs!! Some craic all the same.

Larryís piano bar used to be the spot for the later drinks. Think that was before Thompsonís garage days.

And BCB is accused of being a snob for eating Fajitas...

Did any of you students stay the weekends? Vicoís was the spot on a Saturday and the limelight on a Friday night early to mid 90ís, cracking tunes and the staff didnít annoy anyone.

The Duke of York upstairs on a Friday was decent too

Lived for a while in Hawthorn street, off Cavendish Street and if we'd come up early on the Sunday would have headed to St Pauls for the "folk" night.

Mad altogether.

The Caley? on the corner of the street? Was a good aul night, big bottles of Harp

ventured into it a few times, turned out the barman had played hurling with me da for Ulster, so all was good  ;D

Folks not big time into Rugby but Henderson!! Iím mean am I of script here with this or maybe itís been mentioned, he finds it hard to make the Irish 4/5 positions
Read a few quotes saying it was a squad designed for kick, crash, bang, wallop Rugby, would suit him OK.

Gatland likes his crash ball rugby, hence why Aki is in there. Sexton and Ringrose are better off sitting at home.

The Lions, like the Ryder Cup is of little interest to me. It's a junket.

You're just pissed that you weren't picked.

Read somewhere that Mary Lou and Michelle should put out a statement the day before the DUP vote to say they think it would be great to work with Jeffrey Donaldson as leader of the DUP and then they wouldn't be able to help themselves and end up voting Poots in..

 ;D

"Sexton, one of the undoubted heroes of both the 2013 and 2017 tours and indisputably the form outhalf of the Six Nations.
Instead, they have chosen Owen Farrell, short of form and predominantly used as an inside centre by England in the Six Nations, Finn Russell and Dan Biggar as their three outhalves."

His concussions must have caught up with him

You'd be doing the lad a favour in not picking him. A good rest might see another year out of him

The southern bias has filtered into the Board. Henderson offers much more for the Lions and on form alone it wasn't even up for debate. If Ryan were playing in any other province he'd be behind Beirne and Henderson comfortably in Irelands second row atm.

I thought Beirne was outstanding in the 6N's TBH.

To be fair to Chelsea they are going but real are woeful. One of the worst real teams I have ever seen.

Benzema tried but other than that looked a tired, slow team bereft of any ideas.

Major rebuild needs to happen there.

Chelsea have a real chance against City in the final, no doubt.

Wonder will there be a bit of shadow boxing this weekend between the two?

I still donít think itís in their best interests. It would remove any power they have and remove any chance to overturn that protocol, gay marriage , abortion etc etc.

The protocol is in the hands of the EU and the UK Gov. There's f all that can be done about it here.

The DUP are a strange crowd who have the unerring ability to view a situation and pick the wrong side for what is in the best interests of their voters.

Farmers and fishermen both voted like lemmings for Brexit at the coaxing of the DUP and have been screwed over.

Always thought for sf to really progress they needed rid of ones like her.

Yes, she was a child of a different era, hopefully that era doesn't return and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel but I've said it here before she and her type of rhetoric won't win over the undecideds needed to swing a border poll.

Shinners need to get the likes of Doherty more involved in NI politics, normalising the debate so to speak.
