General discussion / Re: Cavity Wall Insulation
September 08, 2018, 09:39:10 AM
Marty, I got the cavities topped up a few years back with silver bead, there was already 40mm sheet material in the cavity, the house was partly rendered externally and partly facing brick and experienced no issues with damp. As someone else mentioned earlier, a survey by a recognised cavity wall insulation co would be a good starting point and see what they recommend.

Is the insulation being installed between the rafters and then the underside of the rafters being sheeted with plasterboard?

Marty, have you any idea how long the house is built, presumably it isn't new build if the heat is rapidly disappearing? You can top up the cavity with silver bead if there is sheet insulation in it. It would be worth drilling a 100mm core hole (in a cupboard or hot press,)in to the inner leaf of the cavity to determine what insulation is in the cavity and what space is left to top it up.
You should also check the insulation thickness in the roofspace, new houses these days have two layers of 200mm thick fibreglass so that could maybe be considered also.

Marty, before any houses on the unadopted road would be built or the road formed, the builder would have taken out a Road Bond, the purchaser's solicitors acting for the purchasers would have received a copy of the bond in every case as is normal practice in all new developments.
When the builder ceases trading before the sewers have been adopted, the street lighting adopted, the top coat of Bitmac laid on the road and the footpaths asphalted, Transport NI will eventually force whoever has guaranteed the Bond (usually NHBC / bank) to pay for the outstanding works to bring the road and footpaths up to the required standard.
It can take years before this happens, but your solicitor will keep you right on it. NIW  will have the storm and foul sewers bonded too so they may be involved too.

Did Mr Heffron not transfer to the St Paul's club in Hollywood and play for them prior to being targeted?

If you have someone working on your property that has a uk vat no and they were going to use the materials, you could give their vat no  to the co in the south and they would supply the materials vat free and you wouldn't have to reclaim the vat as you wouldn't gave paid it. The southern co sometimes ask for a letterhead with the vat no.

Well Joe really hit the nail on the head in the Indo yesterday, a really good piece on the great work being done by the Slaughtneill club and community, they certainly are an outstanding club. He continued on with a piece about his visit to the Whitecross GAA function and the impact the murder by loyalists of the Reavey brothers had on the family and the involvement of the British crown forces in the murders.
He then took AOF and Jarlath Burns to task on their suggestion not to fly the Tricolour at games or play the National Anthem, certainly seems to have been the prompt for the president to come out yesterday afternoon and row back on his ill judged comments made in Dubai.
Joe certainly doesn't get it right all the time,(who does) but he was right on the money this time.

They used to serve up stuff called Tapioca and Sago as school deserts, awful stuff altogether, the teacher on patrol in the canteen during mealtime used to threaten you with the Strap if you didn't eat it. The pupils called it Frogspawn which just about describes it.
Tinned Spam another revolting dislike, not sure if they still make any of this sh_ _t any more

General discussion / Re: Solar Panels, Yay or Nay?
March 20, 2016, 09:17:53 AM
You should check the number of panels / output of them that are included in the specification and the name of the company doing the install, then contact another company for a rough quote on what they would charge for an install on a new house which would already have scaffolding erected etc so they wouldn't be building this in to the quote. Ask them what the pay back is on the cost, how much hot water you would typically get from them etc, don,t include vat in the cost as new housing is zero vat and the builder wouldn't,t have to pay it either. You could then make a decision to get the panels (which I suspect is the better option) or alternatively go back to the builder and try and getter an increased allowance towards the PC allowances as the 1k offer seems very low.

General discussion / Re: Farming.
February 06, 2016, 10:18:52 AM
Was reared on a farm but haven't been farming for years, recently inherited some land that was rented out for years and was badly neglected, stone ditches all need tidied up and in some cases fence erected on top of the ditch which isn't an easy operation. I've heard of metal posts being available where the wire clips in to the post and may be better than trying to use timber posts, any advice would be appreciated.

On a different note, really enjoyed some of the posts, especially around the calving, brilliant read and brings back memories when we were growing up.

Down / Re: Down Club Hurling & Football

Good point alright, surely the five year plan that was done a few years ago and the ' Consultation Process" that was carried out would have included something like this, it just seems that these documents were completed and put on a shelf someplace, I wonder are they ever referred to,reviewed and amended to ensure ensure everyone is working towards the same goals.
Does the county coaching officer not have an input in to where the various development squads train or is the financial position in the county limiting the options to centralise the training bases in the county?

Down / Re: Down Club Hurling & Football

There were only a few players from East Down in the starting fifteen against Tyrone last year and in Derry in the championship this year, there is certainly no doubt that South Down has the strongest minor teams in the county but we are certainly going to struggle to win anything at this level if almost half the county are not providing talented players to the county minor team.
Are the clubs not doing enough to coach their underage players, do the players have little interest in committing to county football or are there other reasons?

Down / Re: Down Club Hurling & Football
July 21, 2015, 07:45:11 PM
I agree Mc Corry should be given another year, however it is worrying that we had to wait until Wexford dumped us out of the qualifiers before we knew what the goals were for the team. Did the county officers that appointed him not discuss and agree goals at the outset? If they did why were goals not set for the championship? Were the players told that promotion to Div 1 was the only goal this year?
Mc Corry made mistakes this year as did all managers but he needs to accept that and make the necessary changes to ensure our best players line out for Down which clearly did not happen this year.
What are reasonable goals for next year for our senior footballers?

Good idea alright, first need to get approval of the Croke Park Residents Association, the Handball Club and of course a licence from Dublin City Council as we wouldn't want another Gareth Brooks  debacle.May have to call it a "concert" to satisfy the objectors.

GAA Discussion / Re: The Sunday Game

Donal Og admitted last night that T J Reid took ten steps before shooting to the net and then went on on to say that Galway shouldn't complain but should look at how they conceded the goal.
Kilkenny would still have won if the goal had of been disallowed so it didn't affect the result.
However, the correct decision should have been a free out and the goal disallowed, Donal Og is obviously afraid of upsetting Brian Cody and Des didn't pull him up for it.

On a different note, in the football game between Roscommon and Cavan referee David Gough sent off Cavan's Tom Corr who had been substituted before the match was restarted, had Tom not been among the subs in the stand he couldn't have been called on to the pitch and red carded.
In that case would Cavan have been allowed to play the the second half with fifteen players? It was a pity Des didn't put this question to Ciaran Whelan and Kevin Mc Stay during the programme.
