GAA Discussion / Re: Players finally get their Grants
December 11, 2008, 02:29:38 PM
Yeah soley due to representing their county.  Its not a huge amount and its a small price to pay for the honour. Also I know of many many more club players who are substancially more out of pocket. Its just sweeping statements like no county player is ever out of pocket is what gets to me when I know it simply isn't true.

I know plenty of county players and i know as fact that they are not out of pocket, any place they go or have to buy, they are sorted out for it. im not disputing the effort they put in, to be honest dont think i would have the commitment for it (Coupled with my skill levels ;) ) but financially they are never out of pocket,

The grants/expenses or whatver you want to call them is simply "pay for play"

Didnt want to get involved but just because the players you know are never out of pocket it does not mean that others aren't. I know as a fact there are county players out of pocket. 100% fact.

Enda Clarke did play in the match last wednesday night in Cookstown between the Tyrone trial. By all accounts he was fairly quiet until having to retire injured in the second half.

Well in defence of Ricey he did actually visit Brian" Beano " McDonald in hospital when he horrendously broke his leg in the champoinship in 2004 even tho there was never any blame levelled at him.

Enda McGinley and Mulligan scored both goals in the 98 minor final by the way Bloody mary

Guys very valid points but i suppose I should have quoted Bogball as my post was directed at himawhen he said that he doesnt belive county players are out of pocket. That was the only point I was trying to make, and I never mentioned the strike or the grant issue or whether IC players are more worthy than club players altho Radio I do agree that IC players make a substancially bigger commitment than club players.

I also dont agree with the figure thats was bandied about regarding lost earnings. I feel it is too much but undoubtedly many Inter county players are left out of pocket by leaving early to get to training and , being unable to work at the weekends and in many cases having to take Fridays off as well to travel down for a saturday qualifier.

GAA Discussion / Re: Some realism please on the GPA

(1) Do you believe that top GAA players should be out of pocket for represnting their county?

Definitely not, but i know many are.

(2) Do you object to top administrators in the GAA being paid six figure salaries?

6 figures????  Objection.

(3) Can the GAA afford to "pay" top players?

No
(4) Do you think we should treat our top players less well than the FAI or IFA or IRFU?
If you answer yes to 4 please explain why

Unfortunately have little knowledge of either association, at a guess as well as the soccer boys, maybe not the ruggers
(5) Do our top players train less or give less commitment than an IFA or FAI player?

I feel our top players give at least an equal level of commitment to an FAI or IFA player

If you think its Ok to pay administrators but not players please explain why

Simple, cause they havent time for another job, but id def thin the numbers and certainly wouldnt be talking 6 figures which surely is false anyway. IfI had of knew that id have run for President myself.
