GAA Discussion / 21st Century Membership issue
January 04, 2018, 01:47:53 PM
21st century issues. Wondering how the GAA manages a situation where kids are from a family where the parents have split up. Kids with mother in County A during the week where they go to schools and then with Dad in County B during weekends.

Can they be a member of a club in each county? Which club should they be a member of by GAA law? Have the GAA any provision for such a set up which most surely becoming more and more prominent?

Any info appreciated.

General discussion / Irish Dancing
December 03, 2017, 10:46:12 AM
Hello all. Recently my daughter starter Irish dancing. It was innocent enough to start with but I am becoming very uncomfortable with it. My Mrs doesn't agree! These are my concerns, interested to hear from others in a similar situation on what they did. My daughter is 10 yrs old.

1- Kids from 4 yrs old competing as in there are winners and losers. Seems to me it should be about enjoyment at that age. Other sports are non competitive under 10.
2 - Fake tan and wigs. Sexualising small children in my opinion. Apparently you get marked down if you do not conform.
3- Feiseanna are some of the most disorganised shambles of events I've ever encountered. Last one my daughter arrived home at 1am, she was gone since 2pm to an event 1 hr from our house.
4- It's all about money. 1000 euro dresses (marked down if you don't wear at certain grades), expensive to enter, allow people to walk of  the street and register to fill the coffers, that's why it's so disorganised, place full of people selling crap.
5- Medals for all. Huge trophies and medals. It's like chocolate for kids keeps them coming back.
6- Psycho Mammies. They'd whinge about their kids being out in the rain for an hour's football, or having to support a  local football club but all the above is ok.
7- What's any of this doing to support the culture of traditional Irish dancing

I'm hoping someone will come on here and tell me I'm totally wrong and why.

A classic el classico in Breffni. Cavan 4 up with 15 to go but anything could happen. Both teams having purple patches and scoring heavily.

GAA Discussion / U17 Football Championship
May 04, 2017, 09:33:30 PM
Anyone have any interest in this? Ulster is starting this weekend, not sure about the other provinces. One good thing is that it can be run off earlier as none of the players should be doing final year school exams.

March 25, 2017, 12:47:38 PM
Quick question. Up until what age group in football are boys and girls allowed to play together? When I was young I think it was up to and including U12. Anyone know the rules now?

GAA Discussion / Aogán Ó Fearghail Presidency
February 25, 2017, 10:10:36 AM
What does everyone think of the reign of the previous president? It gives me no pleasure to say it as a fellow Cavan man, but I read Joe Brolly's article below and found myself in almost total agreement. I listened to all the candidates prior to the last election and Aogán was very strong on clubs and fixtures, that was his No 1 priority. I look back and what I see is that zero has been done and club players have been forced to set up their own union as a result. In fact I really wonder what this man did at all for the last 2 years. This Super 8 thing seems to have been pulled out of Duffys backside with no consultation with clubs and does very little to address any fixture congestion.

Have I got it wrong. Was Ó Fearghail a pioneer who set in motion critical change or was he another conservative leader who did nothing?

New manager but no new forwards. Could be a trashing for Cavan if we go toe to toe with the dubs as our new manager has suggested. No Givney, Gearoid mckiernan or Keating in the panel this year. Word is Mackey is back in the last 2 weeks

What sort of team will the dubs field and does it even matter!

GAA Discussion / Kildare Recruitment Drive
April 22, 2015, 07:19:10 PM
After a severe dose of Karma in Div 2 this year and the news that 2 players have opted out of the panel I ask is the time now right for Kildare to embark on another recruitment drive?

There's a few lads in Tyrone looking for a game for example.

Cavan are in New York for 5 days training, including 2 games against New York.

I know our opponents Monaghan were in Portugal.

What about the rest?

GAA Discussion / Antrim - What's the story
March 28, 2015, 01:20:51 PM
I was just looking at twitter there and I see Antrim minor footballers getting hammered. It put me thinking what is the problem up there. Antrim has a very large population, if you look at the local threads on here you will see lots and lots of posts on Antrim GAA so clearly there is interest. On the field of play Antrim at all levels are very poor. We even had one prominent Antrim poster critical of how my own county are improving underage. So what's wrong in Antrim?

General discussion / The plaque of the Seagulls

Burgers being robbed, attempted kidnap of pets and gathering like vultures at school playgrounds. What can mankind do in the face of this new threat.

Senator gets into a flap after gulls try to snatch pet dog

Niall O'Connor and Sam Griffin
18 July 2014 02:30 AM

A SENATOR called for swift action to clamp down on unruly seagulls after the birds tried to abduct a "startled" woman's pet Chihuahua.

Fianna Fail's Ned O'Sullivan created a flutter in the Seanad by saying the birds, which he described as "sky rats", have "lost the run of themselves" and are becoming a threat to public safety.

Later he revealed to the Irish Independent he had been contacted by a member of the public after raising the issue, who claims that her pet Chihuahua was almost abducted by a seagull.

"This is now a public safety issue. That woman was startled after the seagull went after her little Chihuahua," he said.

"We have to call a halt on seagulls. There are little kids in playgrounds worried about being attacked."

Environment Minister Alan Kelly indicated last night he would examine ways to control the birds.

However Mr O'Sullivan's comments have been sharply criticised by one of the country's leading bird experts, who said the remarks "betray a total lack of knowledge" of the natural world.

Eric Dempsey said such attitudes led to the extinction of golden eagles. "The actual birds he's talking about are herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls. Before he makes comments of that nature he should check the status of these birds, because they have suffered enormous declines in recent years," he said.

He said cities were ideal nesting sites for seagulls as the tall buildings and rooftops offered similar conditions to sea cliffs. The closure of landfill sites had driven many birds into cities and they were scavengers by nature, he said.

He added: "The Senator's comments betray a total lack of knowledge of this area. When the Senator says they're attacking children, I think he's been watching Hitchcock's film 'The Birds'."

And Lord Mayor Christy Burke also played down the senator's claims.

"From housing and emigration to litter and anti-social behaviour, there are a range of issues that require greater focus by the authorities in this city than the issue of seagulls.

"The senator is entitled to his view, but I would respectfully say that there is not a major seagull issue in Dublin. I invite him to send in any proposals to my office and I will examine them."

The Kerry-based senator had earlier told colleagues that he has "nothing against pigeons", but added that he is "very much against seagulls".

"They're very raucous. They're keeping people awake," Mr O'Sullivan told the Seanad as it broke for the summer recess yesterday.

"I saw that they're getting so cheeky now that they attack young children and dispossess them of their lollipops and stuff like that.

"They're not seagulls, they really are vermin. They're scavenger gulls, dump gulls," he added. He said the onus was now on the minister to act and that he wanted to see the birds placed on Dublin City Council's pest control scheme. A spokesperson for Minister Kelly last night told the Irish Indill be examined.

"If the senator has proposals to ntrol the seagulls in Dublin, he is invited to send them in," the spokesperson added.

Funniest one I saw so far is "Makin saves and banging babes" Donal Og
