Title: Sigerson Cup 2024
Post by: mad tan on January 08, 2024, 08:55:55 PM
Maybe I missed it but I don't see anything about the Sigerson Cup it starts tomorrow. I was looking at the age of some of the players involved this year and some are in their mid 20s. Any thoughts on who's going to win it also with the new fixture set up has it damaged it.

Queens with two scores in that half. First in the 8th minute and 2nd arrived on 30 minutes.  Just the three scores for the Dublin college team with no Dublin players.

Was up at it. Big shock alright. Trinity just hung in there. Few minutes left and they were 2 points down when one of their players tried a point attempt from way out. Ball went high in the air but dropped well short into the keeper. Nobody near him. Under no real pressure. He caught the ball into his stomach but let it slip through his arms and he fumbled it into the net. Huge howler. Galway had a late free from almost straight in front of the posts to take it to extra time but Ryan O'Donoghue kicked it against the post and it went wide. Bad miss really as there wasn't a drop of wind out tonight.

I only got the last 15, but it was like two fellas talking on the couch at home. Trying to figure out who was who and which county they played for. Then calling for frees and all sorts. Mad altogether Ted.
But to be fair, it was great to get the coverage and Jerome does trojan work bringing these games to our front rooms. Keep up the good work.

Not many forwards named to start in the Galway team although Sheriden has form in that department! Surprised not to see O'Currain starting, seems like he made an impact when he came on anyways?

Doesn't seem like Sean Kelly will play any part in this competition so must be doubtful for Galways first few league games.

A great result for Queens against DCU. Horrible game. Both teams afraid to do anything. 15 behind the ball with very little attacking innovation. Both as bad as one another.

It was Jerome Quinn on commentary with a local Belfast man who hadn't a notion. I like Jerome as he delivers good coverage but his commentary is like commentating on a funeral. Slow and random. His co-commentator was absolutely clueless. Didnt know players, what was happening and just generally very poor. I turned it down after a while.

Great result for DIT in Galway also.

Dont take it too seriously lads, i watched it myself. Wasnt a great match as a spectacle, but it was FOC on youtube. The replays were super quick, it was generally very good production wise. A game we otherwise would never have seen.

The younger McCloskey looks a real good player by the way. One for Derry for sure.

O'Curraoin was very good when he came on. Scored two great points. Very close to a third. Just dropped short. Sheridan picking two corner forwards who are better known as backs seemed an odd decision alright. Presume Tommy Conroy has a knock as he was there but never came on.

I missed most of the 2nd half tbf. The last 5-10 minutes were decent.

The commentary as people said was tough to listen. Jerome does great things providing us with all this coverage but his commentating maybe isn't the best!

I dunno what commentator you could get who would be up with the players year on year. I think he has a close enough affiliation with Queens as he's coached there before.

Rory Beggan Chrissy McKaigue Colin Walshe Killian Clarke Matthew Donnelly Nial McKeever Kieran Hughes Ronan O'Neill Jamie Clarke Conor McAlliskey

That really was an exception rather than the norm. Sigerson should always be about discovering and confirming new stars rather than county stars playing. At least that's how it was in my time.

Back door route for UUJ as this match was in the winners section. I believe they now play a winner from the losers section.

Why was the game played in UCD if it was a home fixture for UUJ according to any fixture schedule published.
I know there is always a neutral venue if the distance between the colleges exceeds a certain mileage but Dublin to Belfast is not extreme in comparison to other journeys.

Maybe someone can explain

Not sure but I suspect that UCD had a bye in the first round and therefore had a home game in the 2nd round Vs the winners of UU/UCC. That puts UCD in Qtr finals and UU into next round Vs winners of the losers group.

Anyone got the next fixtures? The coverage of Sigerson in the media is pathetic.

UCD played away in round one and UUJ were in Dublin to play Cork (Abbotstown I think).
So UCD no longer can lose a game. Strange system.

Quote from: pjm on January 16, 2024, 09:34:28 PMAre UUJ out or is there a backdoor after this round?

Nobody can lose from now on. It is effectively KO from here on but this weeks winners get a week rest as this weeks losers play winners of last week losers - hard to follow for sure

Watched NUIG v Sligo, from a Galway point of view Liam O Conghaile kicked the best 2 points of the game very early; Looks like he's capable of kicking scores from distance, hope that injury isn't too bad but he looks like he's a bit further behind in his physical department in comparison to O'Currain. Like the look of both of them, Galway in need of scoring forwards to put pressure on current contingent.

Ryan O'Donoghue is a bit hit and miss on the frees, eventually he was taken off them after missing another easy one.

James McLaughlin standouts for his eye catching fetches but he's going to have to improve defensively to fulfill his potential .

University of Galway 0-11 St Mary's 1-7.  From four points down Mary's went one in front late on then University of Galway got the last two scores of the game to win by 1.

A shock result in this evening's other match. Maynooth 2-14 UCC 1-12

Didn't even know this, and Glass and Ethan Doherty available too. The Sigerson coverage is dreadful, when I was a lad it was massive but the GAA calendar is so difficult now. Wednesday nights in between important Allianz league games has destroyed a once great competition. But sure here, I can't offer any good alternatives either, it's seriously difficult

Still I'd say it's one of that special collection of all Ireland medals to have, think there a few with minor, under 21, senior county, club and higher education (Fitzgibbon and Sigerson) medals.

Think Canning in hurling has the full lot

All Ireland Vocational schools with Tyrone as well as an all Ireland with Holy Trinity in 1998. Pretty much won the lot.

If you were on the UUJ team would you want these boys landing in for the final having not shown the slightest bit of interest before?

Its difficult but its not like they have been sitting at the beach doing nothing, the timing and circumstances around their non involvement is not down to them, they are part of that panel and for whatever reason, club football county football they have not been available.

Plenty of clubs up and down the country are without their county lads until championship in some cases. Would you dish your county stars if they haven't been about for legit reasons or maybe have them at the ready?

I would imagine it's related to scholarships. Couldn't see any way these boys would jump in on the final. Maybe if it was earlier rounds. Completely different set of players, tactics etc etc. Wouldn't work. Different if they had some games to get a run at it.

As my learned friend MR2 says it's not as if they have been idle. University competions are becoming more squeezed with clubs, counties and U-20 teams all on the go.

Might be an issue with cashing in the scholarships as I thought they have to play a set amount of games

If they were taking my place, no. Otherwise yes, if they improve the teams chance of winning the competition. I would argue that Glass is the most influential player in Ireland outside of Clifford whilst Doherty was last years young player of the year. It's a nice headache for the manager anyway if they make themselves available.

Can't see Glass and Doherty starting the final however having both on the bench and having the option to spring both from the bench could well be the difference between winning or losing the final next Wednesday.

There is no football at County level till next weekend and I'm sure the lads would be available for training when they get back from their deserved trip away. Better to have them available to spring from the bench than not.

I'm sure if Clifford was in a similar position to Glass that the college team wouldn't be hesitating on putting him on

Different kind of player though. Bung Clifford in FF line and hit the ball in.

Glass always plays as part of a bigger game plan.

Right to allow it or should have got disallowed for steps?

Did Glass and Doherty not travel to a game the same week Glen won? I thought I read that somewhere.
Glass was limping heavily after the Tyrone game, but I heard an interview where he said a few of them were heading to the sun for a rest too.

If he had have kicked it when he looked like he was going to I'd have allowed it, but its that delay in shooting (and I'm generous with steps) that I'd have pulled it back for the free.

Old school ref'ing would allow extra steps back in the day when lads were hanging or pulling at ya, the ref would have given ya some extra steps (as an advantage) to shake off the player, but the advantage rule was brought in to do a way with that type of ref'ing and the use of the 'slow' whistle that plenty used

But hey, in the heat of the game sometimes counting steps gets looked over  ;D

How can there be such a poor understanding of the advantage rule at this stage.

If the fouled player commits an offence within the time limit of the advantage then original foul is immediately enforced. People seem to think "advantage" is some sort of licence to kill - you still have to play within the rules of the game. I counted 10 steps and irrespective of whether you thought it was 9 or 8 it was an obvious over carry at first glance.

Most refs will normally use common sense and if possible allow the player an extra few steps if he can get away from a foul. Much better imo.

I believe the advantage and original free are cancelled and a free is given for the second foul. A free out in this case.

If the ball carrier is fouled a second time within the time of the advantage the ref gives that foul.
If the ball carrier commits an offence (over carry) within the time of the advantage the ref gives the original foul.
Not much point in the advantage otherwise.

I can see an argument for both ways to be fair though I disagree with the advantage rule in another way.
The idea that you when you clearly had an advantage but ballsed it up that you still get a free.
I think it should be a free or an advantage, not both.

Note (for some): I am not making reference to how the rule is interpreted or refereed. I simply disagree with the rule itself. It doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not sure that's related to what I'm saying. It might be but I don't recall the incident.

My point is that if you are fouled, you should get a free or be allowed to go on if the opportunity is deemed to be more advantageous than the original free.
So, if you manage to get a goal opportunity, that's clearly more advantageous. If you miss that goal opportunity, that should be tough luck and play should continue as normal. I don't believe that you should be presented with a second scoring opportunity for the original foul.

Probably legit enough degree if he couldn't go to university after school due to playing Aussie rules. Sure Niall Loughlin is about 28 but he also done a few years in Australia before hand
Good point hadn't thought of that tbh. Think he was doing accountancy exams during Glens run.

Yes - UUJ have previously won the competition but Ulster University is a new entity combining Magee, Coleraine and maybe a few other campuses.

The whole thing needs an overhaul. Currently not fair on players. County manager rule the GAA and continue to do so and the GAA sit on their hands. Sigerson simply needs to move before xmas and counties need leave the players to it.

McGuinness has 1 degree only. He did lesser qualifications in Tralee then got his degree at UU and did a masters in Liverpool which he didnt finish. Best to stick to the facts instead of cheap headlines.

Will be no Conor Glass and Ethan Doherty for tomorrows Sigerson cup final according to  Ulster University manager Barry Dillon

Quote"They were very keen to get involved, they were happy to play, it's just the timing of it," "We were talking to them before they even finished the Derry club championship, they were in with us before that. They were in with us during the Ulster championship then and they won that.

"Then they went on to the All-Ireland club semi-final and final and fair play to them they won it. They went down then to play in the National League in Kerry, they were kind of running on empty a bit.

"So they missed out on our quarter-final and then it was too late really, it was too late to start bringing boys in for just a final, I just wouldn't do it for any team. It's not the way to do it. Conor is actually away on holidays at the minute, they're away on holidays and they're taking time out, the Glen boys, and much deserved."

Incorrect. The new entity now legally selects whatever players it wants from all campuses and if you're not involved with the mothership first team you can play with the campus teams in the lower grades.

Obviously that's a change from when they would select those campus players anyway as UUJ and not declare it!

Lads let's deal in facts and not snobbery
Ulster University was established in 1984 with four campuses Coleraine, Magee, Belfast and Jordanstown. Jordanstown now closed and only sports facilities remain in use.
Students from Magee and Coleraine could also play for Belfast. However due to the distance for training very few do.
This rule was clarified after a successful appeal to allow Stranmillis student Martin Clarke to play for Queens. The same way St Pats Drumcondra is now part of DCU.
Magee,Coleraine and Stranmillis have campus teams in the lower divisions.
You can only play for one campus
Example Coleraine or Belfast.
Queens or Stranmillis.

If Tyrone are beat its no consolation to me Derry are top of Division 1 or Armagh top of Division 2. I was pleased that Glen won the AI but I wouldn't have lost any sleep if they didn't win it. Quote from: 5times5times on February 15, 2024, 11:59:25 AMPeter has obviously passed on his diving skills to the weans, any touch at all and they were reaching for the swimming goggles. The poor lad marking Daragh was left flabbergasted on a number of occasions with the referee's gullibleness

Was a Mayo fella marking him 1st half unable to handle Darragh at all was too late once the switch was made.

Has been some start to the year for Ulster football. Senior, Intermediate, Junior All-Ireland club titles won. Derry top of Division 1 and the Division could contain 6 teams from Ulster next year and now a Sigerson cup secured.

Ulster team #1 in Div1
Ulster team #1-4 in Div2
Ulster team #1&2 in Div3

Senior, Intermediate & Junior club champs
Hogan cup champs

Time for pathetic other provinces to get their house in Order.

Ulster team nailed on for the Anglo Celt.

Should be a squad / county list floating round somewhere but can't see it.

Can't see too many from antrim though there were a few on the queens team.
Maybe there is a message in that.

Lad from our club on the panel, decent footballer but the standard at UU is very good, will only encourage more lads to go there next year again , they've some pick to choose from.

As bad as the allstars for trying to get lads in team in a position they didn't play..

Who plays "in positions" any more?.
Sure even the goalies are all over the field these days.

Congrats to Daire well deserved.
