Music - your first love & most recent discovery
« on: June 20, 2021, 10:50:24 AM »
Great article in the Sunday Times Culture mag asking a few of their writers to share 'which record rocked their world growing up and their most recent musical discovery'.

One of the earliest songs I can remember loving was Bucks Fizz - Speed it up, there's been plenty in between but 2 perma favourites- Waterfall by Stone Roses & One by Metallica that made a huge impression are still the go to.

Recent discovery is more taxing, I find nearly anything new I listen to is 'old' but I've only recently discovered it! Honourable mention to The Acid Runner by ilario Alicante - great dance tune

One of my earliest memories is being fascinated with the song and video for Ultravox 'Vienna'.
I always considered myself an REM fan first and foremost, but I only really got into them with Out of Time, so it was great to be able to work back to Murmur as well as subsequent albums.  On fan pages there's a lot of division about where to draw the line for their 'decline'- for me, while there was a few great songs after Up, that was the last complete album for me, I never got into the rest the same way.
Since then I've flitted from band to band based on a few songs here and there, but The National are a decent substitute for REM for me.
Perfect Circle from REM and Terrible Love from The National would be my signature choices, but my favourite all-time songs are James Getting Away With It All Messed Up, and Fiction Factory's Feels Like Heaven.

One song I liked as a kid was Video Killed the Radio Star.
I came across this 2004 live version recently and really liked it.

I was listening to the 1999 NYE hour from Lush recently.
https://youtu.be/ryg7ZB10hKQ.
It has some real bangers

I also really like El Nino from around the time Galway were
winning football all Irelands

Some songs/bit of music just have it even if you don't understand the words eg
Aguas de Março

And I really like this :

Where did our love go

I got into the tunes going to an older cousins house in the summer holidays back in the day. Meat loaf bat out of hell was the main stay. I know every word of that album. Quiet riot cum on feel the noise. Def Leppard etc. First album I bought myself was kiss destroyer. I was p6. That's been me since. Countless gigs countless album's later. I would listen to 5 new albums every month at least. f**king live for it.

Remember getting For those about to Rock by AC/DC when i was in primary school and it just blew my mind. 2 years later i heard Horslips, Belfast gigs which had a similar impact. This obsession with music led to me forming a band, releasing albums and seeing plenty of places in the world i'd probably never have seen otherwise.

Recent discoveries, too many to mention really as i kind of have to keep my finger on the pulse of the rock/metal scene so am hearing new stuff all the time. It has led to me being very choosy, which is no bad thing really.

The shutdown of gigs. the pandemic, etc, has had me climbing the walls. I hope things get back to normal sooner rather than later as i need my fix.

Love music, with the exception of Irish Country & garage, house type crap. Loved Tom Petty & the Heartbreaks back in the day. Big into Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Pixies, Weezer & the Cure.

At the moment listen to classical & other music's genres interpretation of grunge, rock indie etc, find that interesting.
Band from Errie PA, doing mighty covers of all kinds of music on YouTube, band called "first to eleven", definitely worth a listen.
Some of Metallicas stuff was mighty.

Reggae was my first love. The record below is the first one I bought.
https://youtu.be/fabnLI4siXM
Massive Springsteen fan but as someone above said above said most of the new stuff I listen to is old.
John Prine is brilliant.
Irish Country music my "guilty pleasure"!

That's some niche reggae stuff there! I was expecting Bob, The Specials or Selecter
