Met Eireann has always been the best guide to weather in any part of Ireland. But since this yellow alert thing came in, they are only responsible for the 26 counties and this has definitely affected the presentation of their information.

Why were things such as weather not proposed for all Ireland bodies? This is exactly the sort of practical thing Met office, Ordnance Survey that should be and yet you never hear the Barry McElduff's of this world talking about this.

Presumably as Met Éireann is an arm of a government department, and thus owned/controlled by the state, its activities are limited to the area of the state (for example, it has none of its own weather stations in the north, and is reliant on data supplied to them from these stations by the UK Met Office). The three-level weather alert system is one that is used across most of Europe to warn of potentially dangerous and disruptive weather, but the actual condition thresholds to trigger a yellow, amber or red warning are not consistent. IIRC the threshold for at least amber and red alerts issued by Met Éireann is a little lower than that used by the UK Met Office.

Also in both Ireland and the UK the only body that can announce official weather warnings are their governmental meteorological agencies i.e. Met Éireann and Met Office. If Met Éireann issued weather warnings for NI land and waters there would be a number of problems - one being of sovereignty of two different states with their own governmental bodies issuing their own different forecasts/warnings over the same land or sea area. Another would be that any Met Éireann weather warning for north of the border would have no legal standing. Finally there would also likely be a level of confusion if say for Belfast city the Met Office issued a yellow warning while Met Éireann issued an amber warning for the same time frame.

Setup an All ireland body that is the competent authority for such things and let the crowd in London look after their own island.
From meteorology to railway regulation an All Ireland body makes sense and wouldn't be very controversial.
