Send the rain over here, feckin 99 degrees the day and we are in drought mode already.

Yesterday the index hit 113, me and two mates walked nine holes at six bells before it got too hot and we were knackered 70 minutes later when we walked into the clubhouse.

At least 42 people have died in a heatwave that has brought soaring temperatures to a dozen US states from the Midwest to the East Coast.

Crops shrivelled and roads and railway lines buckled in the heat.

Hundreds of records fell across the affected area on Friday and Saturday, but the heat was expected to ease slightly on Sunday.

Severe storms are expected to follow. Many homes in the region are still without power after storms a week ago.

Media reports say many of the deaths were of elderly people stuck in homes without air conditioning because of the outages.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered an inquiry into whether enough was done to prevent mass deaths in the southern flood-hit Krasnodar region.

Mr Putin demanded to know how much warning people had been given about the impending disaster.

Activists blamed the ferocity of the flood on the opening of sluice gates at a local reservoir.

A separate criminal investigation is already under way into whether the 150 deaths were caused by negligence.

"The investigative committee will check the actions of all the authorities - how the notice was given... how it should have been given and who acted how," Mr Putin was quoted as saying by the Itar-Tass news agency at a meeting in Krymsk - the worst-hit town.

He was speaking after flying over the region by helicopter to see for himself the damage that followed torrential rain.

The worst affected town is Krymsk, with scores of fatalities.
It was the first major disaster in Russia since Mr Putin, 59, returned for a third-term earlier this year, after a four-year term as prime minister.

'Tsunami'

Flash floods, the worst there in living memory, struck in the Krasnodar region on Friday night, reportedly without warning.

The rains dumped as much as 28cm (11 inches) of water overnight, forcing many residents to take refuge in trees or on house roofs.

TV pictures later showed thousands of house almost completely submerged with people scrambling onto their rooftops to escape the rising waters.

Most of those who died were in and around Krymsk, a town of 57,000 people. But nine deaths were reported in the Black Sea resort of Gelendzhik with a further two in the port town of Novorossiysk.

Wednesday forthnight - 2.30pm to 5.45pm - 20 degrees*. Slap the cooking oil on and get that tan going.

* - this likely to change and longrange weather forecasts are unreliable.

Are you thinking of coming here on holidays?

I thought the weather was to get worse from Wednesday onwards?? We have 20 acres of silage to cut. Could do with a dry spell.

Summer is on its way - just maybe !  :D

Sunny skies 'not too far off' as jet stream shifts

Summer may be late, but it might be just around the corner.

The United Kingdom is expected to get drier and warmer next week, but only after more rain.

"This year the jet stream has been much further south than normal and we have had our wettest June on record followed by a wetter than average July," said BBC weather presenter Cecilia Daly.

But there are signs that the jet stream may shift slightly northwards which means it should feel more like summer.

"Around the middle of next week, pressure will build - the Azores high.

"This would allow our weather to take on more normal summer characteristics," she explained.

But it is too early to ditch the umbrellas just yet.

Changeable weather will continue to affect the north western parts of the British Isles which will include Northern Ireland.

"Nonetheless it would still mean an improvement on what has so far has been a very poor summer," she said.

The jet stream is a great river of wind flowing through the upper atmosphere. Its path is the cause of the repeated flooding being suffered during a British summer that has so far been one of the most miserable on record.

It usually passes along a steady path from west to east across the Atlantic - sometimes a bit to the north of the UK, sometimes a bit to the south.

As a relatively small island, on the borderline between the Atlantic Ocean and the European continent, the precise location of the stream matters hugely and, at the moment, the UK is on the wrong side of it.

However, if it shifts, the weather should prove to be more like summer.

Looks like the East coast of America is going to get battered with NYC in for serious abuse!

The whole subway/bus/regional train system in the New York is shut down as are the schools. So no work for most people in the NY/NJ area.

already getting it rough here in NJ. High tide this morning caused major flooding in coastal areas - we have one family currently saying with us as they were evacuated from their home closer to the beach than ours.  80mph winds expected today with power out across the state for up to a week.
Some places just are not ready for whats coming. Parts of Manhattan, hoboken and the boroughs already flooded.

I have the generator ready to go and the sump pump going like the clappers.
