Hurling All Star nominations revealed

Kilkenny hurling star Henry Shefflin could join GAA legends DJ Carey and Pat Spillane on nine GAA All Stars after being nominated for the prestigious prize.

Shefflin's Kilkenny team-mate Tommy Walsh received his seventh consecutive nomination.

John Mullane (Waterford), Lar Corbett (Tipperary) and Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny) will battle it out for the Player of the Year accolade, while the Young Player of the Year nominees are Joe Canning (Galway), Padraig Maher (Tipperary) and Noel McGrath (Tipperary).

Beaten All-Ireland SFC finalists Tipperary will take some consolation from the fact that they have one more player nominated than the champions, with all bar two of the Tipperary side that started the Croke Park showdown on the nominations list.

The are 14 first-time nominees on the list: Padraic Maher, Paddy Stapleton, James Woodlock, Pat Kerwick, John O'Brien, Noel McGrath (Tipperary), Stephen Hiney, Alan McCrabbe, David Treacy (Dublin), Fergal Moore, Aengus Callinan (Galway), Gavin O'Mahony (Limerick), Noel Connors (Waterford) and Michael Rice (Kilkenny).

Tipperary's Eoin Kelly has been nominated for his sixth award, while Michael 'Brick' Walsh (Waterford) and Declan Fanning (Tipperary), who were previously selected as All Stars at midfield and full-back respectively, have been nominated for the half-back line this time around.

The GAA All Stars banquet will be held on Friday, 16 October.

The 2009 football nominations will be announced on Thursday.

There was a couple of dilemmas but I think McCrabbe is nailed on for midfield. Shane McGraths form last year would have seen him challenging but not this years.

Declan Fanning pushed Conor O'Mahony, Eoin Larkin pushed Eddie Brennan close and the closest call was between Eoin Kelly, Richie Power and Joe Canning for FF...

Woodlocks nomination shows how weak a year it was for the midfielders. He was better in the final but he rarely lasts the full game for Tipp without getting the hook.

I think the full back line up is one of the weakest for a long time. Jackie Tyrell had a good game on Mullane in the semi but was ordinary enough for the rest of the year although he may well get an award. Eoin Cadogan of Cork unlucky to miss a nomination, MOTM against Tipp. I agree that the midfielders are weak this year and McCrabbe should be nailed on for an award.
Personally I would give hurler of the year to Lar Corbett, top scorer for Tipp and took no frees, how often does that happen? I thought he played very well in every game this year. Tommy Walsh had a great AI final and will probably get the award and would be a fine recipient but on this years championship I believe Corbett was more consistent over the series.

Would agree with the team posted above but I was seriously impressed with Padraic Maher...would there be a case for the above team being given All-Stars and young Maher being named young player of the year???

The nominees for the 2009 Opel GPA Hurling Team of the Year have been announced today by the Gaelic Players Association.

A total of 45 players have been shortlisted for the Team of the Year, while three players also received nominations for the prestigious Opel GPA Hurler of the Year Award.

The shortlist for the Team of the Year includes three players for each position reflecting the dominant role played by the player during the 2009 season.

The list contains players from seven counties including; Kilkenny, Tipperary, Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Dublin and Galway.

The shortlist reflects the most successful counties in this year's championship with All-Ireland champions Kilkenny receiving a total of 11 nominations while losing All-Ireland finalists Tipperary go one better with 12.

Semi-finalists Waterford and Limerick both received four and two nominations respectively while Galway and Dublin both had six players nominated.

The three nominees for the Opel GPA Player of the Year for Hurling, as chosen by the Hurling Selection Committee are: Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny), Lar Corbett (Tipperary) and John Mullane (Waterford).

Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the Gaelic Players' Association said: 'Kilkenny's success in achieving an historic four-in-a-row capped a memorable hurling season in which the champions were pushed all the way by Tipperary.

'Last month's All-Ireland final was a testimony to the ambition and dedication of the top two counties this season and this is reflected in their 23 combined nominations. The players will now decide who will be honoured in each position.

'Congratulations to all the nominees, thanks to our selection committee headed by Donal O'Grady and thanks to Opel for their continued support of this unique awards scheme.'

The awards culminate in a Gala Evening on Friday, 6 November in the City West Hotel, Dublin when the Hurling and Football Teams of the Year are presented with their awards on stage and the Opel GPA Hurler and Footballer of the Year are chosen on the night.

Each player on the winning team receives a trophy, €2,500 and a comprehensive set of training and leisure gear. The chosen Hurler and Footballer of the Year each receive an Opel vehicle to the value of €25,000 in addition to the above.
