What's the story with Ireland's success in rowing then? Is it having a bit of a moment? Has there been a bit of a push on it? Did the O'Donovan lads inspire more people to get into it?

Seems like it'd be a good sport to promote if you wanted to get the medal count up. The Brits pushed track cycling for that purpose, but you need a big budget for that, with the facilities and equipment that it takes. With rowing I'd imagine the facilities would a lot cheaper since the open water is sitting there in lakes and rivers up and down the country.

Either way, it's great to see. It's a great sport and fair play to them.

I seem to remember reading about it being all revolving around a small rowing club in Skibbereen.
Don't think this is the particular article but it seems to have the same gist

All due respect to a legend of the game, we have seen nothing that indicates Galway are going to improve from here, will be an absolute dogfight to get back to Div One next year as well.
Not entirely his fault - Galway football problems are of a more systemic nature I feel and outside of a few players a lot of them have just not done it at Senior level - but the cold facts are what they are, Mayo have made a team transition without skipping a beat, people on about all the young players that have started for Galway, the Mayo young lads have come in and are winning, they look absolutely miles ahead in terms of conditioning, attitude and aggression.
Depressing enough really, I don't know do many people even care, if you look at the pathetic fund raising return from earlier in the year, the shambles that is the county website, everything points to a two bob operation.
For the people I see on social media trying to go on about Mayo's failure to land the big one to make themselves feel a bit better about the hames we are in at the moment it makes me cringe.
Mayo are the ones rightly laughing at us, 10 semi finals in 11 years, they are the only show in town West of the Shannon at the top table, Galway have had one good year in twenty and failed utterly to build off the back of that. Expecting some out of nowhere event like 98 to happen again is a Fools errant, we're hopelessly exposed in CP all the time and I've yet to hear a coherent plan about how Galway football is going to be turned around, forget the underage wins, we had those before and made no use of them, what's the plan to get Galway consistently playing in the later stages the Senior Championship?

Not saying it would be a panacea or anything, but one thing I would like to see is a more competitive domestic championship. Corofin's dominance has been a real drag on player development at club level I feel over the past decade and the championship has subsequently been of poor standard. With Moycullen - M/M contesting the most recent final maybe the portents in this area are about to change. It mightn't help our hurling counterparts too much but at least the championship there is of a much higher calibre and helps identify players with county potential.
Crossmaglen's multiple club all Irelands didn't do anything for Armagh.Similar for Athenry and Portumna in the hurling. Or St Thomas' ?
6 teams on a similar level develop over time and can generate a very decent pick.
Sure Galway wouldn't have won in 98 without being beaten by Mayo in 97.

Are you arguing that a competitive championship would help or wouldn't make a difference. I genuinely can't tell from your post

Initially thinking AWJ was a huge gamble, but I guess the shoulder will either hold up or it won't. If he's going to be out, it may as well be early in the tour as late. And you can't risk bringing him on and wasting a substitution if he needs to come back off.

Williams on the bench tho, that's a strange one. He can only really play FB and Hogg can only play FB. Adams would have covered wing and full back, as well as 13 if you were stuck

Ollys been fishing again, got himself a nice couple there 😃

Definitely one. The Deelerís a bit sharper.

Ah the famous cheque story... Not that I'm doubting ur version but its been told that many times there must be a cheque in every pub in country..

One I liked that I read over last week was about him and Cas walking around Giants stadium before Ireland/Italy game at World Cup 94 and it was a sea of green. As they got to the end he looked at Cas and said "f**k me Tony you're the only Italian here"

I reckon half the story's have been exaggerated for after dinner speaking purposes but there's no doubt he was a character

What's worse is that he scored with the way the rebound broke. If Schmeichel had pushed it the other way then it would most likely be cleared. Thems the breaks.

Yeah, and that was because of how bad the penalty was. If the penalty was closer to the corner, and so tamely hit, Schmeichel would have been pushing it away.
As it was, he had almost dived past it so he was pushing it back. Stroke of luck

Yeah it was open knowledge Mayo were training through the first lockdown, never mind the second. I could understand PJ making the mistake once but it happening twice is unforgiveable. Even the way he talks about covid in interviews you get the impression he thinks there should be no GAA at all and it's unfair making players play

Aye that's it. Mayo were training during lockdown and Galway weren't

You leave Frankie Dolan in the ha'penny place when it comes to having a chip on your shoulder about Mayo!

Anybody notice the Sligo 11, Cian Lally, coming on.
Substitution was delayed as he didn't have his gumshield - you'd be raging as a manger - but then as he ran onto the field he just stuck it in his sock.

Every time the camera was on him he seemed to be smirking.
Later on, he fell over and got a very soft free. You could see he wasn't wearing the gum shield.

It's a while since I played, and gumshields weren't compulsory
Would it be common that players would leave them out and play on?
Or did the ref miss it cos it would be that rare that he wouldn't notice

In any other Country ut would be a 1st April story
It's painful to watch, isn't it?
painful to watch joe and Kamala the last couple of weeks they stayed in hiding for as long as they could but Kamala got exposed in guetemala and joes performance at g7 wandering around interrupting people and generally acting like a doting grandad was tough to watch and the man should not be put in that position. Is Jill Biden the president or Susan rice ?

sorry, what?  ;D

IT companies shouldn't care where you work - with the only caveat being timezone.

and in some cases it is beneficial to have the different timezones! We (east coast australia) regularly deal with planners that are in Canada. WE can give them a task, they work on it overnight and we have it back first thing in the morning. We can use the day review and make changes and send it back to them.

I agree with thewobbler on this one. Natural athleticism and size are important, so too is the 'drive' to want to succeed. My cousin was born in December and managed to play hurling for Dublin due to all three of these - even though he wasn't the tallest either - he had that inner drive to succeed.

Anecdotal evidence I know, but that's what I tell those who have children who are born late in the year.

what you are describing is someone succeeding despite being 'disadvantaged' due to their birth month. It's not the same as saying there isn't an advantage. Nobody is saying you can't succeed if you are born in December - sure Steven Cluxton did ok for himself

The article linked a couple of pages back doesn't give any details about what kind of "legal action" is being taken by JB against RTE.

How does it work - would this be publicly available knowledge once the case is submitted? Is there a record somewhere as to whether Joe is suing for some sort of damages, loss of earnings, defamation, etc etc?
