GAA Discussion / Re: AIF 2021 -- Maigh Eo vs Tír Eoghain
« on: September 11, 2021, 09:59:31 PM »
All the experts who never won a thing on here slagging AOS.  Wise up. He is what he is, has good days and bad days. Twice the player almost every person on this board ever was.

Very true. Measured by his All -Ireland medals.
Bullshit. If he was a Dublin player under Jim Gavin he'd have dropped him. He's a great fielder but in all his years he's never worked on the other parts of his game.

He's actually unlucky he never had Jim Gavin as his manager. He wouldn't accept his poor football/shooting skills and he'd have made him work on them or he'd have dropped him from the panel.

How can a lad who's been playing inter county football for so many seasons gave such poor football skills
And just to emphasise the point. He won the 2nd half throw in and duly kicked it to a Tyrone lad. There wasn't a Mayo player within 10 years of the Tyrone player. That's him all over. No end product.

I'm not going to resort to personal insults or anything like that. I've never met him and probably never will. Off the pitch he's probably sound. However he's not good enough at this level and i can't understand how Mayo continue to try to build their game around him. In the semi final after he went off Mayo unleashed the shackles and played some great football. Why wasn't he taken off at say the 2nd water break when it was patently obvious that we wasn't contributing anything. That's on Horan and not O'Shea. Its not his fault he wasn't taken off.

Worst final defeat ever. Mayo defeated themselves. They played the occasion, not the match.

I can only rationalise it by thinking that Mayo have Stockholm Syndrome and their identity is too attached to losing finals. This is one they should never have lost. They had the winning of that match and then some. They should have been winning it by seven or eight points.

All this has to stop. It's too painful for the rest of the country, never mind Mayo.

Tyrone are the most average team to win an All-Ireland for a loooong time.

What in the name of God are you on about. Tyrone were the far better team. This glorification of Mayo needs to stop. It really does. They were very average.
Mayo were comfortably the better team for the first 25 minutes and butchered two gilt edged goal chances. Again Mayo totally dominated the first 25 minutes of the second half and proceeded to butcher pretty much every chance they got, which was a lot. Tyrone got two sucker punch goals. Harte's mark was the key play in staving off a comeback.

Tyrone won because they made few mistakes. Mayo's game was a tale of utter butchery.

They may throw their collective hats at it now.
Sorry but this is miles off what happened. Tyrone were in control throughout. They did what they do. Defend in droves with discipline and then pick off scores on the break. They did it in the Donegal, Monaghan and Kerry games and did it again today. Mayo should have been ready for it but weren't. If anything Mayo got some handy enough frees which in many cases they didn't make much use off. Even the penalty came from a poorly kicked free kick. I think a good manager would get them closer. Build around the younger lads. They can't keep making the same mistakes every year and expect a different outcome.

Taking off O'Hora instead of O'Shea was criminal. Horan has a lot to answer for yet again after a failed AI final.
OHora was on a yellow and getting precariously close to another one. I thought it was a good call. Doesn't excuse Leaving OShea on though. Nothing does.

It's seems fairly mad that Tyrone are going to win Sam here and I wouldn't have had them near the top of the contenders this year, and I don't even think they were especially impressive today.

But at the end of the day they got through all their games, and they've certainly been the better team today. So it's not undeserved at all.
Absolutely deserving winners.

And must be some teams in Ulster especially who think they are very close to Tyrone. Teams who thought they were a million miles away from Sam and now might think it’s something to realistically aim for.
I think Monaghan in particular will be kicking themselves. They gave Tyrone a head start and ended up only losing by a point when they really deserved at least a draw. That game and indeed the Kerry game was a lot closer than today.
Maybe we all ready too much into the Dublin game. Dublin had just ran out of steam. I expect they will be back next year with a chip on their shoulder

Connolly should have had a peno. VAR bottled it, they don't want to upset Portugal.

Explain to me why???

The Portuguese defender backed into Connolly as Connolly was about to strike the ball. It was deliberate and it cost us the match.

I've not seen the game but I want to know why you think they don't want to upset the Portuguese??
Because golden balls had the chance to break the world record and he wanted to be sure it happened on his watch. He gave them a peno for nothing. VAR gave him a chance to right the wrong but he ploughed ahead and gave it anyway. He didn't give us a stonewall peno. He didn't give us a decision all night. He gave them everything. He played a minute extra at the end. In the first half he did the same until we got the ball and then he blew it up. The occasion got to him. He should be sent back to the u12s after that

That argument would be worthy of the schoolyard in the morning but are you really putting it out there in an adult conversation...

Football/sport in general is like that, sometimes the decisions go against you but.to wailing ' wah, golden balls, peno, conspiracy' is pathetic... Balls.ie and the like have a lot to answer for....

I'm sure golden balls could have hung on til the weekend or next week or whenever to break the record...

You didn't even watch it so what argument have you even to put forward.

My argument would be that the referee might have got every single decision wrong for all I know, thats how the cookie crumbles sometimes. It's unlikely to be because he didn't want to 'upset the Portuguese' or 'let golden balls get the goals on his watch' because well just because 🤷
Go look at the peno he gave them. Look at what happened in the aftermath. Look at what Ronaldo did. Then look at the peno that Connelly didn't get. Its almost impossible to get some many things wrong in the same game but he managed it

Condescending p***k.
He could have waited and i'm sure he would have got it fair and square eventually. He didn't need all the help he got tonight. This ref wasn't able for the occasion. I don't think there was enough in the 1st half incident to send him off but he should have at least been booked. The ref was afraid to even do that.

So predictable.
Much better tonight but it was still headless chicken stuff all too often
Loads of opportunities to relieve the pressure in the second half and we just gave the ball back. Kenny still a tool

Go and support North if that's the only thing you can say after that. Look at the players in each team. Jesus I swear gobshites like you should be deported to uk

Mate the ref being a dick or not Ireland still should have won that match they were causing Portugal all sorts of problems but then sat back for the last 30 mins waiting for the inevitable. Kenny is untouchable as always even though his subs were questionable and too late
Would you stop. He needs time and hopefully they give him this campaign and then have a look. Look at the chance England gave Southgate and were he took them. We're unlikely to do that but for me anything this campaign is about preparing for the next one. We won't qualify but we knew that anyway. This is all about seeing what we have and then giving the Euros a good shot

Its sickening. You'll go a long way to see a big homer ref than that. As bad a performance as I can remember in international football

🏆 #UELdraw - Group G 🟢⚪️

🇩🇪 Bayer Leverkusen
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 #CelticFC
🇪🇸 Real Betis
🇭🇺 Ferencváros

Our confirmed Europa League Group for this season's competition! 👊

#UEL | #COYBIG 🍀

That's not a soft group

Celtic will take some humping in that group. A draw with any of those teams would be a good result.
You'd expect the germans to win it but 2nd is possible.

Different format this year. Winners go through obviously. 2nd place play a playoff round vs the 3rd placed teams from the Champions League. 3rd placed teams go into a playoff for the the new conference league against the 2nd placed teams in that competion. 4th placed teams go home.

By 6 if Lennon was in charge and Barkas in goals.

There are positives,  Hart's saves, Eddy is on the up and up, Christie, Ralston and Montgomerie  in the 2nd half.

Was that the same Alkmaar player who also skied the ball over the bar from point blank range  at Celtic Park?
That Jesper Karlson nr 11 is a very tidy technically gifted player, he would look grand in a Celtic shirt, I don't understand why he was excluded from the Swedish Euro squad.

Over the 2 legs Celtic thoroughly deserved to go through. Should really have had a 3 goal league after the first leg. They didn't even score a proper goal as such - they got 2 gift wrapped presents

I think Eddy staying is huge. I know Celtic can't afford to let players leave for nothing but if we got a version of Eddy that is anything like the season before last then he'd win the league for us. He made the difference last night - completely changed the game when he came on. The danger is that he will be focused and play well until Christmas, sign a pre-contract and then down tools to the end of the season. I think its worth the risk though at the league winners this year are straight into the CL group stage

Neil Lennon thinks Celtics revival is due to the fans being back as opposed to the previous manager being dung. Funny that.
He'd be better off staying away from interviews for at least this season. The transformation this season is unreal. I watched the game today. There's been some new signings but the players that were there last year (e.g. Rogic and Turnbull) are unrecognisable now. Sorry to disappoint you Neil but that's not because of the fans

So the 45 was retaken because Mayo had 16 players on the pitch. Seems strange to penalise Dublin for a Mayo mistake ?

Jersey pull by Beggan
Yip clear as day. Credit to him for tracking back but lucky to get away with it
Beggan  made up a lot of ground,  got his hand to the ball , then a slight tug and a wonderful piece of skill to take possesion of the ball under pressure.
The Tyrone player dallied on the ball.

He pulled Matties arm back to slow him but if it had been a forward they would have buried it. Thought Mcgough gave monghan a bit more in the 2nd half.
I hardly ever comment on a refs performance and how it might have affected Monaghan in a game. In that game that was a nothing contact  and in the context of what  Beggan  did to win the ball,it was a small part. The ref  decisions debate is endless, the drag back on  K. Hughes, black or yellow? What does it matter now?
Thought tyrone got the best of it with a couple of really soft ones near the end, You never see Con OCallaghan getting done with a steps call like that either. I've no issue with calling for steps but you have to be consistent and do it properly. He didn't
