Laois / Laois under 20 Football Championships A and B
November 03, 2025, 11:38:33 AM
I see some good discussion on the hurling thread about the under 20 championships.

Just interested to hear views on the under 20 football.

The A should be interesting. Looking like SPG, Na Fianna Og and Portlaoise are strong contenders.

Graiguecullen, St Pauls and O'Dempseys should battle out the B.

Old Leighlin were terrible. Only got a few scores near the end when Port were down to 14.
Good result for Port. They have a chance to regroup now and give it a shot against the Louth team.
They should be a lot harder to beat. Sam Mulroy on his own will take some watching.

Have to agree with other posters.
Poor game, probably mostly because of the conditions, and a really poor decision for the penalty which ultimately decided the game.
Courtwood will be disappointed with that but also with the fact that their forwards never clicked on the night mostly because the Port defence was excellent.
Port were poor enough on the night. Hope I'm wrong but hard to see them making an impact in Leinster.

https://laoisgaa.ie/laois-football-championships-proposed-restructure/?fbclid=IwY2xjawNUfopleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHs5sRcdCdkJoD_QfhGQH2lv1WxdLiTp1Aqdk4YJ41XNGRv5xZfNxVLIRuhaz_aem_uJgrmrf13EOsNHa32RqedQ
Looks a well thought out proposal.
Anyone who thinks we should retain 16 senior clubs in Laois football is doting.
However, getting this through is another day's work. A lot of middling senior clubs and most of intermediate clubs might see it as raising the bar too much for them.
But, honestly, what's the point of just hanging on in senior, year in, year out?

Really looking forward to Sunday. Weather permitting, think we might get a cracking final.
I think Camross look very focused and might just edge it.
As the last poster above said, a lot will depend on how CB handle Mossy and Dowling.

On the senior final, bit disappointing to hear the Portarlington manager whinging after the game.
Having watched it back, Colm Murphy wasn't fouled at all that time.
Actually, the biggest decision gotten wrong was the short 45 which Paddy O'Sullivan scored a brilliant point off of. The Port keeper was miles into the other half coming up as he thought to kick the 45 leaving only three back.
If that had been properly spotted, that's a 13 metre free in front of the posts and probably game over.
Think he got the Jason Moore one right under the stand. Yellow card all day long. Never a black or red.
Exciting game but full of mistakes and missed chances/poor shooting. Both teams will feel they kinda left it behind.
Suspect Port will have learned a lot and might edge the replay.

Quote from: Laoisred on October 14, 2025, 04:10:47 PMMy understanding (and I could be wrong) is that Killeshin had a minor team this year which competed at another grade but that the top lads/certain amount  of lads were also permitted to play for this amalgamation in the A competition too.
This definitely is not the case.

Didn't see that Courtwood result coming to be honest. Fair play to them. Think they lost the corresponding game last year by 12 points or more! It wasn't a brilliant game but doubt if that will concern them.
Joseph's were very disappointing. Missed O'Flaherty a lot but the return of James Kelly didn't really seem to help them much either. Hickey at 6 very good. Daly tried hard. Thought Tyrell, Dunne, Kinsella were good for Courtwood and Byron from dead balls was the difference.
The other game was worse. Graigue were so bad in the first half. Port were never in a battle and eventually pulled away. Jason Moore brilliant again.
Expect them to win final by 6 or 7.

Don't see the issue with the podcast at all. Gives an outsider like me a flavour of what's being done in terms of development. Laois GAA gets plenty of stick for lack of promotional work so surely this is a step in the right direction?

Prediction time.
Just can't see beyond a Port v Joes final.
Fair play to Graigue and Courtwood for getting to the semis but think both will come up a little short. Port seem to be peaking at the right time of year yet again and adding players to the squad each game. 60 years since Graigue won a senior championship. Would be a great year for them to do it. They'll need everyone at full tilt tomorrow.
Emo and Rosenallis to win the B semis and Crettyard and Ballyfin to contest the relegation final.

Well done Park Ratheniska. Comfortably the better team last night. Should be in a better place for senior over the next few years although they will probably have to replace a couple of older players (has Jimmy Langton got a time machine or something? What a player!).
Simon Fingleton should be back next year along with maybe Brian Fingleton. They also had a couple of county minors this year who should come through over the next year or two.
Commiserations to Arles. Think they might get it tough enough to get back to another intermediate final. Last night might have been the last time to see a few great players in the maroon jersey - I hope I'm wrong.

I don't know the ins and outs of the particular game but it seems to me that whatever body allowed RE's appeal has left itself open to further appeals at higher levels by Colt Shanahoe if they are interested in doing so.

Quote from: redsetanta on September 15, 2025, 10:33:21 AMWhy did Aidan Fennelly leave?
My understanding is that it wasn't his choice and that the club didn't want him to stay on. Poor looking decision in hindsight.

GAA Discussion / Re: GAA Clubs That No Longer Exist
September 08, 2025, 02:42:12 PM
In Laois, there's a load of clubs that don't exist anymore. Some of them just amalgamated. Cullohill and Durrow became The Harps. Park (football) and Ratheniska (hurling) just joined forces as a dual club, Park/Ratheniska.
Jamestown disappeared but O'Dempseys and Courtwood took their place. Vicarstown and Moyanna also joined as Annanough. Numerous clubs came and went in Portlaoise such as Kilminchy, Rovers and the hospital staff team, St Fintans.
Cappamore, Derrydavey, Cuddagh, Ballygeehan all won hurling titles and no longer exist.

LAOIS SFC QUARTER FINALS
Portlaoise v Courtwood - Portlaoise should have enough to win by around 7 or 8
Ballyroan-Abbey v St Joseph's - Could be a hard watch. Joes by 4
Arles-Killeen v Portarlington - Port by 6
Graiguecullen v Killeshin - The local derby factor makes this one interesting. Graigue seem to win this game year in, year out. Graigue by 5

LAOIS SFC B QUARTER FINALS
Ballyfin v The Heath - Ballyfin struggling but might have a win in them but not this time. Heath by 7
Emo v Clonaslee-St Manman's - Could be tasty. Emo by 4
Stradbally v O'Dempsey's - Not where either of these wanted to be. Strad by 1 after extra time.
Crettyard v Rosenallis - Rosenallis by 6. Cretty will struggle to say up.
