Two or three Club AI's to supplement his one senior and probably a load of U21 and minor ones..

Great hurler who along with a load of the lads on the current senior team have underachieved the last few years..

There are numerous examples of sporting legends who retired without reaching the pinnacle of their sport so thankfully Joe at least got his AI medal that was the very least his talents deserved. For pure raw natural ability there were few better.

I saw him for the first time in the 2006 all Ireland minor final. Amazing player.
Shortly afterwards the wheels fell off cork hurling.
And he got the Celtic Cross, even if it could have been more.

What a player. Thought there would be a few years in him yet but glad he got his All Ireland with Galway.

This is a disaster for Galway. I'm 90% sure he'll change his mind and come back next year!

the problem for Joe was that he played for the county at such a young age in all levels, 2 Minor all Irelands 1 under 21 4 club all irelands and a Fitzgibbon
and 5 Galway titles at senior..

The body can only do so much.

Been a pleasure to see him win at Croke, was a great day out. Seen him win on Paddy's day also.

There was always an air of expectation something special might happen when Joe got the sliotar and my word did he deliver on so many occasions.

Privileged to have seen him in the flesh plenty of times.

So many would watch a game just to see Canning play.

Has there ever been anyone as good with the sideline cut ?

Every time I see the UK or US media go bananas about a great baseball or cricket catch, I think of Joe Canning - that one where he does a hand pass out the backdoor and puts a player away in space - magic.

He's pointed 27 in the championship, Mick Moroney comes next on 8 and Austin Gleeson has hit the most of those still playing and he's on 6 according to Malachy Clerkin. He hit 4 against Limerick in last year's semi alone.

For years there was more hype about him than delivery. It was only when he lost a few stone and got fit that he was any use.

I'd love to see his greatest goals compilation. Also I think he had the best vision of any hurler ever. Some of his passes - almost no look at times - were phenomenal. I saw him a good few times at minor. I've never seen sideline cuts like them. Big loss to Galway.

Never forget his debut against Cork, but the two things that stand out the most are that reverse hand-pass and the swivel goal against Kilkenny where he should have been hooked but the man had magic in his wrists.

Writing about the five-time All-Star in the Irish Examiner at the weekend, columnist PM O'Sullivan predicted the retirement as Canning finished his time in maroon as the game's most prolific scorer.

"The same moment saw him depart, in all likelihood, the Galway jersey. Thirty-three next October, he has given all and took some of the finest scores ever seen," O'Sullivan wrote, before remembering some of those iconic moments.

"So many instances and so many days... Canning's goal in 2015's Leinster final remains something else altogether. Anticipating and anticipating the drop of a long impromptu clearance, catching and pivoting and striking in one seamless movement, the knot that stayed a ribbon.

"Even the net seemed astonished, as the Bolshoi Ballet met the fields of Portumna.

"That goal was liquid instinct, Wimbledon genius transplanted to Croke Park. His goal in 2012's drawn All-Ireland final, one hardly less indelible? Ice in the head.

"He ran off James Regan's incision, taking a popped handpass. Then Canning bevelled across the Kilkenny defence, feinting without hesitating, heading for the one spot where he could only goal, via master blaster effort. Once there, he surely netted, Superbowl genius transplanted to Croke Park."

Added O'Sullivan:

"No one in the history of the game struck a sliotar cleaner than Joe Canning."

Typical thick (Tipp I presume?) comment. Has achieved constantly since he was playing adult hurling at 17.

I must have dreamt that he won All Stars in his first two seasons then if that's the case. And again three years after that.

Title: Re: Joe Canning retires
Post by: seafoid on July 29, 2021, 09:06:40 AM
The reason Galway won one all Ireland is simple.
The project started in late 2011.

The dominant team was Kilkenny.
They beat Kilkenny in the 2012 Leinster Final but lost the all Ireland after a replay.
They were beaten again in the 2015 all Ireland.
2017 was year 6.

If Limerick had emerged in 2012 it would probably have been the same. If Galway had emerged in 2018 ...

12 and 15 were well winnable for sure. But even Tipp' , with a fine team, were unable to put back-to-backs, while Clare never remotely pushed on after 13. Shows how hard it is now to reach the summit. I daresay even KK in their pomp would have won as many under Cody if the round-robin had been introduced at the time.

That goal was indeed a thing of beauty, probably not remembered much as Galway got beat that day, but was one of the best goals I've ever saw.

The one they threw away was against Limerick. Realistically in those KK games they probably weren't good enough. When it came to it Joe stood up so could not be faulted.

Was his debut not earlier that year V Antrim in Casement in the qualifiers ?

Going to replays against Kilkenny & Clare did for Galway in 2018, should have been wrapped up the first day on both occasions.

To be pedantic, I think his debut came V Cork in the league semi-final in Limerick, a game they won, and he scored a typical sideline. Lost the final to Tipp' but even then he stood apart.

Austin Gleeson's successful sideline cut puts him into joint second of the championship's all-time scoring list. His point puts him on eight, level with Clare's 1970's maestro Mick Moroney...he still has some way to catch the man in front however.

Joe Canning is on 28 and counting.

Even harder to see how he might come back. The only hope is that Shefflin will bring him back in later if Galway are struggling.

I highly doubt Joe Canning will be back. Although I wonder would he have given it one more year if he new Henry Sheflin was  going to end up managing Galway. In my opinion he is one of the all time greats. He left us a lot of great memories like the day he scored 4 line balls. Hard enough getting one never mind four in a packed Croke Park.

By good fortune I'm going to meet him in two weeks so I'll ask him the same question everyone else will ask, can you give it one more year..

I think Joe should make a coaching video on the technique of how to take line balls and frees. He truly is the master.
