GAA Discussion / Altogether now 2027
February 20, 2024, 03:05:37 PM

https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2024/0220/1433336-gaelic-games-associations-set-2027-as-integration-date/

The GAA as we know it will be a brand-new association by 2027 according to the organisation. It was announced this morning at a media event in Croke Park that the Camogie Association and the LGFA will be fully integrated in to the new association within three years.

Former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese has been chairing a steering group for the last 18 months and today it recommended that by 2027 there would be just one new association.

This means one club and one county board working to provide games, finance and facilities for its members. The recommendations come at the end of a detailed consultation process involving more than 30,000 respondents. The committee said it was clear that this was what the membership wanted to happen.

Over the next number of years staff in both the Camogie Association and LGFA will be subsumbed into the bigger new association. There will be no job losses.

In response to a question from RTE News, Mary McAleese said that on the contrary there was a strong possiblity of job numbers growing in the GAA

On the pathway ahead, McAleese, speaking at a press briefing at Croke Park on Tuesday, said: "The Steering Group on Integration, after 18 months of intense listening and discussion, has now a recommended pathway to what will be the most historic development in Gaelic games and that is one association for all of Gaelic games by 2027.

Mary McAleese addressing the briefing at Croke Park
"Gaelic games are about to enter a new era. We are now at a point where the will of the members of the Gaelic games associations on integration can be delivered if our recommendations are followed and acted upon and made real."

On today's development, GAA president Larry McCarthy said: "One of the biggest ever sports surveys of its kind, with more than 30,000 responses, produced an overwhelming majority in favour of integration.

"That gave the SGI the mandate to make the dream of One Association a reality. We now have a roadmap to deliver an exciting future for all three Associations that will benefit all of our players, our clubs and the communities they represent.

"Working together, these proposals represent a new dawn for Gaelic games, and we will be committed to its development and its success. I'd like to thank Mary McAleese for her stewardship of the SGI and look forward to presenting details of this proposal to our respective congress gatherings in the coming weeks."

Hilda Breslin: "Our vision is to foster the growth of Gaelic games and contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of the people of Ireland"
Camogie Association president Hilda Breslin added: "Today marks a significant milestone for the Camogie Association, signifying a thrilling new chapter in our journey. Today is filled with excitement as we embark on a path of progress, merging to become one club, one county, one province, one congress, one association.

"This momentous step towards unity, equality and inclusivity is a testament to our shared goal of creating an environment that champions excellence and supports the holistic development of our players.

"Our vision is to foster the growth of Gaelic games and contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of the people of Ireland. Central to the realisation of this vision is our dedicated volunteer network, the backbone of our association.

"Their passion and commitment drive us forward, making this not just an association but a collective endeavour that belongs to each and every one of them. It is their combined efforts that will propel us to our 2027 goal.

"This is more than just an organisational shift. Together, we are actively recognising the vital role of women in sport, emphasising inclusivity, progress, and the collective strength of our association."

LGFA President Micheál Naughton said: "We have come a long way since the formation of the LGFA in 1974 and as we prepare to celebrate our 50th anniversary in July, it's time now to embrace the next chapter in the development of our game.

"We are rightly proud of our progress and, as a strong and vibrant sport, Ladies Gaelic Football will only be strengthened and enhanced through integration. I have been proud to work on the Steering Group on Integration and our work will continue as we move forward with renewed purpose and focus."

General discussion / Ulster Workers Strike 2024
January 15, 2024, 12:55:19 PM
Not much chat about the strikes coming up on Thursday. Can't really see it having much effect other than to piss off those not striking. I see one of the Trade Unions is going full on militant and looking to block roads etc.
Have huge sympathy for Nurses, Doctors, Council workers, Translink staff and the rest but blocking roads and general civil disobedience might be a bit far.

Save for Teachers, who of course took the pandemic off, will find public sympathy in short supply and they'll need to tread carefully.

GAA Discussion / Manager's Salaries
December 08, 2023, 10:54:06 AM
Surprised this hasn't been raised. Maybe I missed it on another thread apologies if I have. I see Colm Parkinson tweeting or x'ing about the cost of Colm O'Rouke at Meath and then Mickey Harte at Louth. Neither county appeared to make any attempt to hide what managers are getting paid.

Harte and team almost €140k
O'Rouke and team just over €76k

Years ago they said of under the table payments that they couldn't even find the table. Well looks like they have found it now.

The volunteer and community ethos well out the window. Would Louth not have benefitted more from investing that €140k into youth football? Instead Harte is away up the road in smoke with it.

General discussion / Self Improvement Gurus
October 24, 2023, 11:15:42 AM
Saw the clip of Jake Humprhey and Gordon Ramsay were Ramsay talks about having to sell his Porsche to get a deposit for a flat as his father in law wouldn't lend him the money. Both come across as f**king arseholes. Humphrey seems to frame himself as some against all odds, high performance character, maybe he is, but he comes out with a lot of nonsense. 5am starts bullshit.

But it got me thinking there now seems to be a proliferation of these absolute rods and rodettes selling some 10x bullshit self improvement course that promises to catapult your life into the realm of a trillionaire.

You need to get up at 4am, meditate on a treadmill, run a half marathon, journal, drink some monkey dung coffee bean and get into the office at 5:30. #winning

Tom Smyth, Kym Calvert, Grant Cardone and many others. Complete frauds who at least appear to be making a clean fortune from people. It's the modern day equivalent of magic beans. You have to just manifest it.

On TikTok and other social media you can spot other arseholes pivoting into this space. Many are PTs who are largely unintelligent, incoherent conspiracy lovers.

Has anyone done any of these courses? Or any first hand experience?

General discussion / ATM Thefts
April 01, 2019, 04:36:39 PM
With the recent spate of ATM thefts, does anyone think these are all a little bit too organised? There's no doubt the same gang is involved. I mean a digger is near by, CCTV is all a bit inconclusive. Are the retailers or construction workers on the take here? The buildings are insured. No one gets hurt, it's a victim-less crime.
There's so many questions it doesn't add up that's it a random target. How does this gang know where the diggers are? Are they driving around the county all week looking for targets? How do they know the ATMs with the money in them. Be an awful lot of work for say a few thousand. When they strike, they must have a safe location nearby to transfer the goods. This past few weeks we've seen incidents from Fermanagh to Antrim. They're not driving to the one safe location. Why is the money not marked or traceable?

The whole thing doesn't seem right to me, there's so many moving parts that the police should be apprehending these guys.Someone knows what's going on here.

I remember locally when we had no ATM and it was a f**king pain in hole.

GAA Discussion / DICK v WOOLY
July 24, 2018, 09:38:04 AM
I see Parkinson and Clerkin are having a go at each other on social meeja. Wooly called his recent article a bag of shite essentially.
"So after mistakenly reading Dick Clerkin's piece I now know his son's name is Cailean, who is now going to games, he sat at the game with his father Hugo and met his mother Mary after the game.
Christ almighty"

Clerkin
"So I believe Colm Parkinson read my column today.. that's nice. He must hate that its his job to read and listen to me every week, whereas I thankfully never have to read or listen to him, for any reason....ever!! (🎤dropped)"

Parkinson
"Hi Dick,
I know you don't listen but I'm just enquiring if you could contribute to a new Monday slot on the podcast called 'my family day at the game' ....I think there would be huge national interest.
We'll mention Sky for you too"
