We have always had cocktail sausages with our Christmas dinner, but not wrapped in bacon as it sometimes raised an argument about whether Jesus was circumscised or not.

Only 55% of "NI Catholics" would vote for a UI :o
https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2022/12/03/poll-shows-northern-ireland-rejects-unity-by-large-margin/
This isn't really a surprise. Most people would say its at least 10 years too soon gor a vote on unity. And there is no discussion on how things will look in a UI. Health education tax the 3 big tickets.  With the NHS in a mess though it's no longer the Beacon it once was. People are cautious to make decisions that will hit them in the pocket.  Another thing with polls it all depends where the  poll was Done.

There's also the issue that people have lived in relative peace for almost 30 years now.  A transition to a United Ireland has some potential to upend that.  That could be a factor for some of the 45% in that poll.

The threat of loyalist violence may be a factor in maintaining the status quo. but people have to realise that after a vote in favour of a U.I. The police force which currently protects them will have been replaced by the Garda who will make being a loyalist paramilitary a less attractive position.

At the risk of getting banned. Are they a law unto themselves. We need to stop making excuses for the traveling community. If this had happened among the "settled" population. We would be appalled and demand justice. Welcome the travellers into a multi ethnic Irish society and expect them to abide by the laws of same.

I remember Bingham as being pissed off at the "one team in Ireland" jeers in the first match in Dublin earlier that year.

Which was fair enough in my opinion.

It's just that on the night in Windsor he should probably, in the aftermath of Greysteel and the Shankill bombing, have been a little less animated and provocative. The crowd and the tension didn't need stoking.
That night the phrase was coined, Billy Bigot. Charlton told a story about the intense frenzied bigot frothing atmosphere during the game, but when he went upstairs to award a prize to a local soccer club  thing, the packed room gave him a prolonged standing ovation. Afaic Billy was only interested in one thing during that game, victory and what was happening in the stands was atmosphere that he could garner. I doubt if Billy was that figure as part of his character, otherwise  he never would have been able to preside  over a mixed ethnic religious team during the polarised  height on the 'troubles' and earn the total respect of all involved.

Billy bigot didn't earn the respect of the vast majority of nationalists in the north. He was happy to promote OWC as a team for everyone as long as the taigs knew their place.

What is INF?

Irish National Foresters.  There is still a branch in Cookstown. I think they lease their premises to Mugsy (Mulligans Bar)
They still parade on St. Patricks day.

Andy Goram has terminal cancer
https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2022/0530/1301964-andy-goram-reveals-terminal-cancer-diagnosis/

Very complicated life

When he does pass away, will they drape his UVF flag over the coffin and maybe put the black arm band he wore for Billy Wright in the coffin with him?

didn't he claim the black armband was for his aunt (who died several months prior) and not Billy Wright who was killed only about 5 days beforehand. Don't think too many bought that one.

He found it harder to lie about this one.

This belongs in the Tyrone thread surely???

That picture is of The Diamond in Magherafelt. When you look on Google Maps where they are facing, it is a Union Jack flying from a lamp post.

Snow White and Seven Dwarfs are in a serious car crash.
GardaĆ and Ambulance men at the scene think all are dead until they hear a faint voice calling from the wreckage.
"Mayo will win the All Ireland" said the faint voice.
"Oh thank God" said the Garda "at least Dopey is still alive"
