General discussion / Carson signs for WBA
July 18, 2008, 03:18:24 PM
QuoteScott Carson has today signed for Barclays Premier League new boys West Bromwich Albion.
The England international goalkeeper has reportedly penned a four-year deal at the Hawthorns after the two clubs struck a deal.

Carson made nine Liverpool appearances after signing from Leeds in January 2005.

The highlight of his Anfield career came when he featured against Juventus in the quarter-finals of the 2005 Champions League.

The past two seasons have been spent on loan at Charlton and Aston Villa, in which time he has won two international caps.

Deal done, no mention of money but would probably be £3.5 - £4.  Bets of luck to him, he never really got the chance to impress but he is a decent keeper.

Heard last night from a very reliable source that Fergal Moore will not make it.

I don't think we'll see Steven Gerrard being put out on the right again, except in the odd game where we are going defensive. I have a feeling, on the targets being mentioned, that Liverpool might be playing a flavour of 4-3-1-2 this year, if the targets come off. Width will be sacrificed, with marauding full backs supposed to offer the outlet.

Something like

                              Reina

Arbeloa/Degan      Agger   Carra/Skrtel      Dossena/Aurelio

               Mascherano
         Kuyt/Alonso           Barry
                Gerrard

                           Keane
               Torres

I see where you are going with this team/formation, but it does not alow for Babel, unless you see him as being the back up striker for Keane.

Keane would be an excellent acqusition and Barry should be forgotten about.

I agree with the Billy boy that Skertel and Agger would be the ideal CB pairing.  They would compliment each other in my view the way Vidic and Ferdinand do. Skertel and Vidic are similar players as are Rio and Dagger.  It would seem that Rafa is looking at a slight change in formation if he is looking at Keane but at least it will offer different options

Sean McCague's Ulster Championship winning Monaghan team of 1979 would be right up there. Of that team, their full back line would have left their mark - Gerry already mentioned elsewhere - but the crowning glory would have gone to Fergus Caulfield - the prince of them all!  >:(

Agreed Rufus, some shower of cnuts alright. Some number done on Emmet Mc Givern that year. Their thuggery in the Ulster Championship in stark contrast to their craven capitulation in the All Ireland semi final.

BTW i'm with Hardy on the two Francie incidents

Jaysus Passedit, i didn't think ye had it in ye!

Oi

I think you'll find that I said much the same at the time. The key question here is what would anyone who has played the game at any level have done? I'd be very dissappointed if anyone on any team I ever played on hadn't done the same as Francie. IMO Mickey got hurt because he was brave, once the pass was made he knew what was coming and didn't flinch.  You'd expect to be badly shook but the teeth was just unlucky. Now as for the first time he had to visit the dentist that's a different matter.

The thing about the teeth too, at Mickey's age he would have been due to lose a few teeth anyway ;D

This is an issue I have with people.  The team I coach have problems with kicking the ball.  Due to the nature of the game in Cork very few people focus on kicking the ball long and consequently they do not have much emphasis in training at underage level.  Players need to be coached at a young age how to kick both round the corner and straight on.  Also there is little to no focus on being able to kick off the weaker side. This must be coached from very young.  Habits are built up early and I am trying to break players styles that they have had for years and it is not easy.

What are you trying to get them to do? Clatter the full back and punch the ball over from 60 yards? :D

In a manner of speaking, Yes!!!!

Armagh / Re: Armagh Club football & hurling
July 16, 2008, 01:23:16 PM
Maghery are likely to go down, even if they pick up teo points in Cross on Friday evening :P

I think then it could be any one of the teams from Pearse ogs down in the league.  I think the Ogs will be alright.  If they have two games against the Harps they could win both of them and this would put Harps in a very precarious position.  I think Dromintee will find it difficult.  I think Killeavy will stay up as will Mullaghbawn.

In a toss up between Harps and Dromintee, I would have to say I think Dromintee will stay, they have two extra games over Harps and I think the two games Harps have against the Ogs will determine where they play football next year and I think they will lose both.

Exactly, which is why I am waiting on someone to wrongly put Bellew's name up there.

Bellew is a very hard player no doubt about it but he also has a very thick dirty streak in him. Nobody outside Armagh would or could dispute this. Just ask Mickey Linden of Down or that Wexford player he near killed in the National league final a couple of years back. Should of walked for both.

Dont get me wrong now Bellew is an animal with limited enough skill but he is the sort of animal you would love to have on the edge of your square and as someone mentioned on another thread his positional sense is very good and so is his reading of the game.

Bellew hit Linden more or less shoulder to shoulder.  Linden was in mid air as he jumped for the hospital ball that Coulter gave him.  He was coming at speed and Francie was rock solid.  He didn't hit him frontily, late or high, just hard.

As for the Wexford game.  He went for a ball at full pace with a Wexford player.  The Wexford player and him reached the ball more or less at the same time and clashed side to side with Francie being the strongest.  He is not alway an angel but doesn't deserve to be associated in this grouping of players.

Those of you outside of armagh will not know this man but trust me when i say-

Eamon toye (maghery)

Not a big man but the hardest fcuker I ever had the displeasure to play against, but like real men was an absolute gent off the pitch.  We beat the head off each other more often than not and then drank in the club that night.
