Quote from: playwiththewind1st on November 04, 2025, 12:38:26 PMI am starting to think that it doesn't really matter who is in power any more.
Somehow or another, i had expected things to change a bit in July 2024, after everything we had to put up with from 2010-2024, but Starmer & Reeves are both completely incompetent & neither of them are up to the job.
The Western political & economic model is clearly not working any longer & social cohesion has completely disappeared, under the influence of neoliberalism.
I am just wondering....how are the UK state finances still a completely busted flush, after everything that wasn't nailed down being privatised since 1979; the North Sea oil revenue bonanza; the era of austerity & then all the benefits & savings Brexit was to generate?

Starting? What took  you so long? Bunch of gangsters, the lot  of them

The UK is heading  for a bail out.

Quote from: JoG2 on November 04, 2025, 12:01:37 PMTrying to fix 14 years of Tory rule will have many more speed wobbles.. If they're given time that is.

They don't have the support of the left of the party who want endless spending, look how they got in when trying to tackle the welfare bill (and it was only footering round the edges).

Is it just me but should there not something be done about the huge profits some companies are making in the UK, maybe increase the tax levels on profit at a certain % of revenue.

The reason for inflation the last few years was not over demand by the consumer it was greed by the energy companies and supermarkets taking huge profits.

The UK has a very progressive tax system. What people don't understand is that if you tax these companies to the hilt they will just leave.

Tesco would leave?

BP, Centrica and National Grid PLC, EDF who are all foreign owned would leave the UK?

I don't buy that shite.

Exactly. It's fear mongering. It won't happen until neo-liberalism is toppled.

I find it amazing that there is such a clamour from a lot of the squeezed middle not to tax the big corporations or billionaire class more.

Sometimes the electorate deserve what they get.

Martin Beck, at WPI Strategy, warns the Chancellor to tread carefully. "Given the toxic mix of high borrowing costs and sluggish growth, Reeves's determination to re-establish fiscal discipline is understandable. But her commitment to tackle the UK's chronic economic underperformance sits awkwardly with the prospect of yet higher taxes.
"If tax hikes cause growth to falter and revenues disappoint, the Chancellor could find herself trapped in a self-defeating loop of higher taxes and weaker growth – the fiscal equivalent of treading water while the tide rises."

Maybe Reeves will tell us how she aims to deal with that little mess, on 26th November.
However, she's probably too busy, learning how to rent a house out, cadging concert tickets & sponging a clothing allowance off wealthy Labour benefactors to even bother worrying about her day job.

There is a growing problem with these so-called economically inactive NEETs.

If they haven't worked a day, or paid in a penny to the system, they shouldn't qualify for benefits, full stop.

On another note, the DUP run Education Authority is now saying that the taxi bill for the daily school runs locally has doubled, from £20 million a year to £40 million. How the feck is it that schoolkids get taxis to & from school, the parents don't have to pay a penny towards it and their big cars sit there on the driveway, whilst their offspring are chauffeured around?

Everything needs to be stripped back.. People who physically can't go to work, work from home then, its a thing nowadays

If having problems with mental health, you aint alone, most people on the planet have some sort mental health issue and they just get on with it, find a job that works with it..

Walk your kid to school, or as we did, we walked ourselves to school, I mean 40 million!!! WTF are they driving them in Lambo's.. Or get the yellow bus up and running for them, they'll be fairly quick making their way to school when that bus shows up outside their door..

Prescriptions! Start charging them, and cutting out the stuff you can get on prescription that you can get in Boots..

No problem with housing help, cause what else can ya do?

Those that work and pay taxes, go to the front of the line when needing NHS provision, might make them sharpen up their appetite to work if they can get their meds quicker..

Basic wages has to be better than the benefits, so either drop the benefits current allowance, or increase minimum wage

People that are long term dole need to be fed into a government met and funded work scheme that will get them working in the community or working towards a new skill with something at the end of it..

This is only cutting the edges away.. We still need to be taxing the big companies far more, we need a workable sustainable business that can run a Health service
None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought.

An Algerian sex offender

Metropolitan Police say the 24-year-old Algerian prisoner was mistakenly released from Wandsworth Prison, a Victorian-era facility in south London.

Built in 1851, the complex was originally constructed for fewer than 1,000 prisoners.

An August 2024 report by the Independent Monitoring Board found inmate numbers in the prison, had grown to 1,513.

"Wings were chaotic and staff across most units were unable to confirm where all prisoners were during the working day," the report said.

In April the HM Inspectorate of Prisons noted the population had reduced by 150, and other "limited and fragile" improvements had been made.

Foreign nationals make up about half the prison's population.

So, they land into the UK, commit serious crimes, go to jail sometimes [which isn't always a racing certainty, given the current light sentencing regime prevalent amongst the judiciary], get released early or, more likely, by "mistake" & get £500 straight into the sky rocket?

None of these guys arrives with any identity papers, nobody knows who they really are, or what they have been up to previously, in their own countries.

If you arrive without any identity paperwork, it should be an automatic deportation.

She could deal with it better by taxing cúnts like Sir Charlie to pay for mental health services for the people he's punching down on.

You think it's perfectly normal to have 800,000 added to the list in 6 years as long as the rich are taxed to pay for them? No individual responsibility at all. There must be something in the air or the water that is making all these people desperately ill.
