Where does the money go and is there a split by county ?

€700k a team. Milage, equipment, 3 meals a day, a holiday, paying managers and staff.

It looks daft as a headline, but break it down.

However the GAA make €45m in tickets sales from the two championships. The only profits are pints, tv rights and sponsorship, about 20m. That doesn't seem right.

3 nights a week for a panel of 50 (players and support team) all eating a meal at €10 a head is €1,500 a week on food.

3 nights a week with a panel of 50 getting about €20 each a session for mileage is €3,000 a week.

So that's €2,200 a week left to cover facility hire, physios, masseuses, video guys, stat guys, and management teams. Not to mention hotels and buses and hotel meals for games.

It's honestly not big money when you break it all down.

I know, for example, the meath hurling team get 21 meals a week delivered.

Even professional soccer players are expected to sort out their own dinner.

A lot could be trimmed here.

It won't be spread equally by county. There are only 14 serious hurling teams

D3 and D4 wouldn't be paying the full whack

The Sam Maguire teams would get most of the money. 16. Maybe 70 or 80% of the football money.

Serious money is probably only max 10 teams.

Galway get €2m from Supermacs. The elite counties have their own funding. That's for hurling and football.
Galway hurlers had a team of 20 in support. Psychologists, match stats (4), taking videos,  video review, someone in charge of hurls, masseur, doctor, bus driver, selectors- can't remember the rest.

Tipp, Limerick, Cork and Clare and maybe Kilkenny would be similar

Limerick could be spending €1.5-2m but it is very hard to get numbers.

You'd imagine that wouldn't you? Not so. Union rules. Same "entitlements" for all county panels football and hurling no matter what level.
