Apart from the pathetic response from the GAA PR department that the Ring Cup could not be staged on Sat/Sun 2/3 (as fixed last November in the original draw!) they rub it in by withdrawing RTE's commitment to televise both games. We're back to the same lowly status as the old All ireland B and Junior championships.
Its pretty obvious that the GAA took the decision to fix all four football qualifiers in Croker to the detriment of the Ring and lesser extent Rackard Cups. They weren't forced to play the football qualifiers there this weekend and do so to please counties that have had many opportunities to play there recently.
The Ring and Rackard Cup FINALS (not qualifiers) should take precedence over backdoor qualifiers and should have been fixed for the 10th and 17th August before the hurling semis rather than be treated in such a shabby fashion.
The sudden withdrawal of television coverage is a means of further demeaning the value of these championships and sullying the good name of Christy Ring and Nickey Rackard just to prove a point. This point seems to be that the R and R teams should agree to move the Final at a week's notice to a support slot to the Dubs game. Why didn't they do this with the Tommy Murphy Cup as the winners of this competition have no promotion play-off the following week.
Nicky Brennan and co. have stated the current GAA policy very clearly. They now agree with the promotion of 2nd class citizen status that often applies to hurling in the "weaker counties" and this attitude is basically discriminatory and contrary to GAA and EU equality policy. The apologies (quite rightly) to the abhorrent racial attack on a young footballer contrasts to the sniggering, demeaning attitude of GAA top brass to the 2nd and 3rd tier hurling competitions.
All Ring and Rackard counties should boycott next year's competitions unless the bungling, incompetent GAA administrators and laughable HDC come up with assurances that the original purpose of the Ring and Rackard Competitions is maintained, i.e., proper media coverage , with the final staged before a hurling semifinal. Not too much to ask?!

From BreakingNews.ie:

Next Saturday will see an incredible 23 senior inter-county football and hurling matches take place around the country, including the All-Ireland SHC qualifier double header of Cork against Galway and Waterford playing Offaly in Thurles.

The recently redeveloped Semple Stadium will play host to the two fourth phase qualifiers, which were teed up at last evening's draw in Limerick.

The Waterford/ Offaly game will get things rolling at 5pm and the Cork/Galway clash has a 7pm throw-in. Both games will be broadcast live on RTE.

Increasing the expected drama and tension, there will be extra-time if necessary in all 23 of Saturday's senior fixtures.

Saturday afternoon and evening will see all eight of the All-Ireland football first round qualifier matches take place.

The pick of those games, the all-Ulster meeting of Monaghan and Derry at Clones will be shown live by TV3 (throw-in 3pm).

Elsewhere, recently dethroned Connacht champions Sligo will take on London in the first round of the Tommy Murphy Cup.

The second tier football competition also has three other games down for decision including the clash of Waterford and last year's winners Wicklow.

Meanwhile, the hurlers of Antrim and Laois will slug it out on Saturday afternoon in their Liam McCarthy Cup relegation play-off tie.

The losers of that game will face another play-off against the 2008 Christy Cup champions to decide who will feature in next year's Liam McCarthy Cup competition.

Also on the hurling front on Saturday, the quarter-finals in the Christy Ring Cup and Nicky Rackard Cup will be played out.

Last year's finalists, Westmeath and Kildare, will square off in the last-eight of the Ring Cup, while there are four Ulster teams, including South Down, left in contention in the Rackard Cup.

The newly-formed Fingal side will be hoping to maintain their run in the competition when they entertain Leitrim at Parnell Park.

Interestingly, none of the remaining teams have won the Rackard Cup to date. Louth came closest when they lost to London in the inaugural 2005 final.

Sunday's GAA action - just the Leinster and Ulster football finals - is relatively sedate when compared with Saturday's blitz of games.

Hurling Discussion / Rackard Cup 2008

Who will win the Nicky Rackard this year. No outright favourite this year as I see with Roscommon and Armagh gone. What's the story with the Fingal team?

Hurling Discussion / Galway v Antrim SHC Qualifiier
July 11, 2007, 12:43:43 PM
What's the chances of Antrim knocking over Galway this Saturday in Pearse Stadium. Galway seem to be lacking in cohesion at the moment, however Antrim have lost some of their more accomplished and experienced players over the past few weeks due to weddings, retirements, injuries, etc. Any forecasts? Many supporters heading down over this festive season?

Hurling Discussion / Nicky Rackard Cup

Who are the favourites?

I suppose Armagh (only team playing in Division 2) and Roscommon (Div 3 champions) must be the front-runners.

Four groups of three counties: A: Sligo, Armagh, Tyrone; B: Donegal, longford and Leitrim;  C: Roscommon, Fermanagh, and Monaghan; D: louth, Warwickshire and Cavan.

Top 2 qualify for quarter-finals.
