Tyrone boss Harte rings changes for 2013 squad

Tyrone boss Mickey Harte has heralded a new era for the county, confirming a major overhaul of his squad and the departure of 11 established players.

Fourteen new faces are in the 2013 squad while John Devine, Damien McCaul, Brian McGuigan, Owen Mulligan, Davy Harte and Sean O'Neill are left out. Stephen McNally, Niall McKenna, Aidan Cassidy, Peter Hughes and Ciaran Gervin are also omitted. Only five members of the 2003 All-Ireland title-winning squad remain. The are Stephen O'Neill, Conor Gormley, Sean Cavanagh, Pascal McConnell and Dermot Carlin. Mulligan's future remains unclear, with the attacker involved in Sunday's Ulster Club IFC final with his club Cookstown. Cathal McCarron, who had reportedly also been let go by the treble All-Ireland winning manager, remains a member of the 39-man squad. Niall Morgan of Edendork would appear to be a ready-made replacement for goalkeeper Devine, bringing a Stephen Cluxton-style asset with his ability to kick points from long range free kicks. The leading scorer in Tyrone's Division One, Conor McAliskey of Clonoe, is another recruit, as is Coalisland midfielder Plunkett Kane. Harte may take another look at both players in Saturday's league final. Ardboe's McGuigan clan will continue to be represented, with Brian's younger brother Shea given his opportunity to step up to the inter-county scene. Harte revealed last week that he had his eye on a number of players from his own club Errigal Ciaran, and he has included three - Ciaran McGinley, Tommy Canavan and Stefan Tierney. Omagh pair Conan Grugan and Barry Tierney have also received call-ups, as have Danny McBride of Strabane, Kevin Gallagher (Newtownstewart), Dean McNally (Kildress), Sean Warnock (Greencastle) and Tiernan McCann (Killyclogher).

Tyrone squad: Pascal McConnell (Newtonstewart), Aidan McCrory (Errigal Ciaran), Conor Clarke (Omagh), Cathal McCarron (Dromore), Mickey Murphy (Galbally), Mark Donnelly (Carrickmore), Colm Cavanagh (Moy), Conor Gormley (Carrickmore), PJ Quinn (Moortown), Mattie Donnelly (Trillick), Joe McMahon (Omagh), Peter Harte (Errigal Ciaran), Johnny Lafferty (Urney), Paddy McNeice (Coalisland), Ronan McNabb (Dromore), Dermot Carlin (Killyclogher), Martin Penrose (Carrickmore), Stephen O'Neill (Clann na nGael), Darren McCurry (Edendork), Ronan McNamee (Aghyaran), Ronan O'Neill (Omagh), Justin McMahon (Omagh), Kyle Coney (Ardboe), Sean Cavanagh (Moy), Stephen McNulty (Clonoe), Conan Grugan (Omagh), Barry Tierney (Omagh), Plunkett Kane (Coalisland), Ciaran McGinley (Errigal Ciaran), Danny McBride (Strabane), Kevin Gallagher (Newtownstewart), Conor McAliskey (Clonoe), Dean McNally (Kildress), Niall Morgan (Edendork), Stefan Tierney (Errigal Ciaran), Tommy Canavan (Errigal Ciaran), Shea McGuigan (Ardboe), Sean Warnock (Greencastle), Tiernan McCann (Killyclogher)

I thought Harte said last year when he named the squad for the McKenna that there was no such thing as a McKenna squad, just the 2012 squad. He did rest a few boys last time, but he only named 26 for 2012. The fact he's named a squad of 39 or so here, including injured lads indicates that this is it for 2013.

Looks like apart from McCarron, GL were on the money.

From what I hear those boys that haven't been named have had the door closed behind them, including Mugsy.

Ulster Herald:
Brian McGuigan has said any potential return for Tyrone won't come until after the June 10 Ulster Championship opener with Armagh.

Despite taking part in an in house training game with the Tyrone senior squad in Clogher on Thursday evening, the Ardboe play-maker has repeated his assertion made to the Ulster Herald this week, that any return to the county set-up won't come before the clash with the Orchard county in the Athletic Grounds.

"It's simply not feasible for me to come in before the Armagh match. The boys who are there have put in a serious effort since before Christmas, and there's no way I'm going to come in this close to the championship and disrupt things," he said this week.

"After the Armagh game we'll look at it properly, see where I'm at, where Tyrone are at, and make a decision which we feel is going to be in everyone's best interests."

Speaking on Friday, McGuigan confirmed that his position remains the same.

The Ardboe man played for 30 minutes in the in-house game, which featured a number of promising club players from around Tyrone, yet to be drafted into the injury-hit senior side.

Mickey Harte's injury headache was further compounded this week after Moy talisman Sean Cavanagh was ruled out for the rest of the season. Ronan O'Neill, Tommy McGuigan and Kyle Coney have also been ruled out the 2012 championship.

It's understood that Peter Harte, Ronan McNabb, Stephen O'Neill and Colm Cavanagh sat out last night's training game, which featured county under-21 stars Conor McAliskey (Clonoe) and Darren McCurry (Edendork), who have impressed for their clubs in this year's All County League campaign.

It's also believed that approaches have been made to a number of recently retired county stars to return for Tyrone, however the Ardboe man appears the only retiree that has heeded Mickey Harte's calls to date.

Minor league tonight

Strabane 0-0 Carrickmore 0-0

What happened there ? Blanket defence taken to a new level or what ?

Plenty of reds in Omagh tonight apart from the Trillick men as well.

Looks like game didn't take place-another no-show from Cmore at this level

From what I heard Carmen have withdrawn their minor team from competition.

Don't think so. The team has been invigorated and put in a great performance against Cappagh last week and were unlucky not to beat them. I would be very surprised if the team were withdrawn at this point.

Was poor alright but Errigal had the win but for a few very poor errors. Much better side but could not put it on the scoreboard. Carmen will be delighted with a point. :-\

Delighted with the two points in the reserves as well!

Was not at the stiffs match so can't comment. Do carmen have many more to come into the team? No pensrose today. Is wee dan still playing? Big Ozz after suspension is up?

I can see Oz coming back after he has served his time. Will want to retire on his own terms. Wee Dan and Paul Hughes are gone as far as I know. Carmen are also without John Donnelly, Benny McLaughlin and Paul Daly (all emigration). Big losses at the back. There's probably another couple gone that I've forgot.

Colm McGurk is also out injured in the long-term. Kevin McNally and Gormley both took knocks on Sunday as well, Maco's looked more serious. On the positive, Penrose should be back soon, so I hear.

It'll all be about rebuilding the team this year.

Tyrone rocked by Ronan O'Neill injury

ONE of Tyrone's young hopefuls was facing an anxious wait for test results this morning after suffering a knee injury during under-21 county training on Monday night.

Ronan O'Neill is understood to have injured his cruciate ligament in the session, an injury which could keep him out for months if the worst fears are confirmed.

The Omagh St Enda's player will miss tonight's Ulster U-21 quarter final with Donegal as a result of the injury.

The star forward has been establishing himself in the senior panel during recent months with a number of strong displays in both the Dr McKenna Cup and National League.

O'Neill had gone for an x-ray on Tuesday afternoon, the results were due today, after which it was expected they would be sent to a consultant for diagnosis.

However reports have suggested that the worst fears have been realized and that the St Enda's prodigy has in fact suffered serious damage to his cruciate ligament, which could rule him out of action for both club and county for up to a year.

A bigger loss for Omagh, but terrible to see such a young talent badly injured as he makes his breakthrough on the senior county scene.

Am i the only person who thinks that penrose moving to carmen is a disgrace? Hundreds of men make the journey from belfast to their clubs every week and others have even farther to travel. Yet he cant drive 30 minutes up to Aghyaran, and its not as if they are that bad a team, they have a number or promising young players and will surely be one of the favorites to make it back up to senior level. A move like is not what the GAA is about. I didnt hear if there was even any sort of falling out but maybe i could be corrected.

P.s good luck to Derrytresk the whole of tyrone is rooting for you

U think it is a disgrace, well boo hoo you, ya ballox. He lives in Carrickmore and has for the past while, how bloody simple can it be. Now if it was a professional game, then by all means lets pay him to travel 3 or 4 times a week., you know all that time he would spend in his car driving up and down. Buts its is an amateur game, and there is some difference if it only takes you 5 mins to get to the club pitch. What is sure, he didnt make this call easily. Now get off you high horse.

The point i am making is that very few people live 5 minutes from their local pitch, and that many many club footballers have to travel much longer than him to train and play, but they would never think of moving clubs. You say he didnt make the call easily, many people would agree that there was never a call to be made (unless there was a fall out).

Point was he was at times working about Ballymena, driving home to Carickmore, then maybe driving to Aghyaran to train and back home again. Then maybe driving to Cookstown for county training as well. That's alright for a couple of years, but maybe takes its toll  after a while. We're not talking about Seanie Johnston here, its a legitimate move motivated by family circumstances and a decision that he obviously hasn't taken lightly. He's given plenty to St Davogs and his decision should IMHO be respected. It's nothing new in the GAA, I suppose Christy Ring was a disgrace as well? Marty has already taken plenty of flack about it already by all accounts. I don't think he needs to be reminded what the GAA is about.

...and you'd be doing well getting to Aghyaran from Carmen in 30 mins. Unless of course he had the use of a runway on the Whitebridge Road...

Say what you like about Meath football but the row in '96 against Mayo was a manly affair once Larry Finnerty and John Casey were taken out of the equation.
None of this ganging up on lads craic.

Fair play. Typing from the saddle is never easy.

No doubt the Derrytresk lads are gutted, especially those who look like missing out on an All Ireland final. But if the team weren't determined before, what is this not gonna do?

The 'us against the world' mentality has helped bring All Irelands to Tyrone teams in the best, lets hope the Hill men can upset the odds and bring another All Ireland to the county.

Or maybe there's other footage we haven't seen?

Maybe, but the Derrytresk No 3 who is in the footage for the majority of that video is not involved and never lifts his hands.

By the sounds of it, the Hill men believe they've a good case for getting Campbell off the hook. Appeal being launched tomorrow apparently.

John Devine (Tyrone) Few big saves early in Section A games, even though Pascal pulled out a few amazing stops later on

PJ Quinn (Tyrone)
Liam Morrow (Derry)
Aidan McCrory (Tyrone)

Conor Quigley (Fermanagh)
Peter Harte (Tyrone)
Neil Forrester (Derry) made big impact around half back area against Down - one to watch

Colm Cavanagh (Tyrone)
Mickey Murphy (Tyrone) notched up plenty of scores

Mark Donnellly (Tyrone)
Owen Mulligan (Tyrone)
Conlith Gilligan (Derry)

Paddy Bradley (Derry)
Stephen O'Neill (Tyrone)
Seamus Quigley (Fermanagh) Wasn't going to risk him the full 70, until I realised its a fictional team

Tyrone bias of course, but ....

haha - well sure you'll have Ronan O'Neill to come in and replace Quiqley when that belly gets the best of him!

Tyrone biased so I'm surprised you left out McCarron and Carlin
But I definitely don't think Cavanagh should be in there ahead of Cavan's GearĂ³id McKierney.
I had Michael Murphy in as well and delighted to see my clubmate Forester getting recognition outside the county - can have a big part to play this year.

Mark Lynch was outstanding throughout the whole tournament so I'd include him anywhere in the forward line all day long

Obvious Tyrone bias plus I watched them more. Can only judge Derry on what I seen in semi and final. Mark Lynch has a good half hour in final but I wouldn't have included Sean Leo. Colm Cavanagh has been Tyrone's most consistent in form player in McKenna Cup.
