Should Nickey Brennan ask the ordinary members to rule on grants?

Read Eamonn Sweeney in the Independent today. The main thrust of the piece was that it was his belief that Nicky Brennan should let the ordinary members of the GAA rule on the issue of grants to IC players (as was done with rule 21 and 42). Do you agree with him?

But it's got nothing to with the GAA. So why should the membership vote?

If the government want to issue grants to amateur sportsman, why should the ruling body of that amateur sport have to be an intermediary?

Agree fully, the GPA and the Govt. created this problem, let them sort it out. Not a G.A.A. issue

Is the GPA not trying to get the GAA to accept some form of professionalism so long as the government stumps up the cash, thereby blowing the amatuer status out of the water and leaving the door open to further demands down the line? They have a part to play and the rank and file need to be consulted to show the depth of feeling on these issues one way or the other.

Central Council supported the idea of grant aid for players. The GPA and the GAA issued a joint document in April stating exactly how the grants would be distributed to the players. It is all there in black and white. The bottom line is that the GAA bosses agreed that the players should receive grant aid from the government. I think that the ordinary members should get the chance to say what they think.

While this may be a problem not of the GAA's making, a vote would tell ALL what the GAA family thinks of the matter.

What can the GAA 'rule' on? They've already said they are in favour of the players getting the grant, but they will not be walking themselves into future problems by being the purse holders.

I'm happy enough with that stance.
