Pompey have sacked Paul Hart.   We can expect the the Portsmouth players to play the "game of their lives" that usually follows any manager's parting.

I agree and Portsmouth is down beside Southampton, an unhappy hunting ground for Utd for lots of seasons. Remember the 6-3 loss back in the 90s. And by God Pompey will be up for the game because it's Utd. Hopefully the fringe players will play well tonight.

4 years ago he was spouting the same garbage on RTE when he said there was "something fundamentally wrong at Manchester United", yet here we are 4 years later, league champions for the third year on the trot and finalists in the last two Champions League campaigns winning one of them

Im not that convinced by Macheda at all. He got lucky with that goal v Villa and will forever be remembered for it, but hasn't done anything since to justify all the hype. Yes he's only 18 but nothing like Rooney, Owen, Joe Cole etc when they were the same age.

Macheda has loads of time to develop, he's shown the odd glimpse of class and I'm confident he'll be alright.

Welbeck disappoints though. Pace to burn but not much else. Pathetically one footed too, which won't cut it playing up front at the highest level.

Gibson is a Hull/ Bolton level player at best. Loses the ball way too often to play for a top team.

Obertan looked lively tonight, but his end product isn't up to scratch yet.

All in all, wouldn't be overly confident throwing any of these lads into a game of any importance at this stage.

football is a matter of opinions but for me he has the look a real good player but maybe not with man united?

Rooney lived off the Everton goal v Arsenal for years before he made it big time, Owen best years where when he was younger when he had pace, while remind what Joe Cole did??

Rooney is a different class to Macheda.

Rooney represented his country at 17, as well as play in a major tournament when he was 18 and was the youngest scorer in the competition. How far is Macheda away from the Italy squad?

He scored 15 goals in his 2 seasons at Everton, Macheda has scored 2 so far, one of them he knew nothing about, and has done bugger all since.

Rooney was sold for £26 million when he was 18. I cant see anyone shelling out that for Macheda, or any other 18 year old in the future.

Any non blinkered Utd fan will admit that his goal v Villa was lucky. Yes it was a very important goal, but to say it will go down in history as one of the greatest goals in the premier league, is a joke. And what has he done since then? He ran about tonight like a headless chicken. Compare that to Rooney on his debut in the Champions League.

In fairness bar the examples you mention and Fabregas very few stars at 18.

Dunphy in great form tonight alright, hes the king of the soundbite. Compared United kids to Arsenals very unfavourably ignoring the fact the United youngsters  went to a fa cup semi-final last year against Everton and were very unluckily beaten after AET and most of them would have played at least some part in winning the Carling Cup too. As with most groups some of them will make it and some won't but I'd be pretty happy with most of them at this stage plus with Diouf and Ljajic both to come possibly in January in my opinion the futures bright...

By the law of averages Dunphys gotta be right about United some year, I was cleaning out a press at work the other day and found a 2006/07 preview mag from the Star and the main thread of Dunphys column was the demise of United, without a title in 3 years, poor signings Ronaldo, Vidic, Evra, nobody coming through he actually tipped them to maybe fall from top 4. Our records not been too shabby since then.. So if United don't win it this year Eamo it won't be that we're crap it'll just mean someone else was better, thats the way football works
