Fascinating read, it's a long one - be warned.

QuoteThat was never clearer than when Trump told his new chief of staff, John Kelly—like Mattis, a retired Marine Corps general—about his vision for Independence Day. "Look, I don't want any wounded guys in the parade," Trump said. "This doesn't look good for me." He explained with distaste that at the Bastille Day parade there had been several formations of injured veterans, including wheelchair-bound soldiers who had lost limbs in battle.

Kelly could not believe what he was hearing. "Those are the heroes," he told Trump. "In our society, there's only one group of people who are more heroic than they are—and they are buried over in Arlington." Kelly did not mention that his own son Robert, a lieutenant killed in action in Afghanistan, was among the dead interred there.

"I don't want them," Trump repeated. "It doesn't look good for me."

QuoteIt turned out that the generals had rules, standards, and expertise, not blind loyalty. The President's loud complaint to John Kelly one day was typical: "You f**king generals, why can't you be like the German generals?"

"Which generals?" Kelly asked.

"The German generals in World War II," Trump responded.

"You do know that they tried to kill Hitler three times and almost pulled it off?" Kelly said.

But, of course, Trump did not know that. "No, no, no, they were totally loyal to him," the President replied. In his version of history, the generals of the Third Reich had been completely subservient to Hitler; this was the model he wanted for his military. Kelly told Trump that there were no such American generals, but the President was determined to test the proposition.

Did they get anything?
who knows , the judge who signed search warrant is a former defense attorney for Epstein and a big democrat donor ,the  investigation is being run by the dc division who is run by same guy who came up with the whitmer entrapment kidnapping scheme , the fbi has lied and doctored documents to get warrants against Trump and his associates before so anything is possible.
Strange how the nyt reporter was on weekend news shows setting the stage about documents being flushed down toilets in White House and this happens next day . Bottom line hey want to charge Trump with a crime that stops him from running for public office and this is how they have planned to do it .

Love this!! 😁😁 Would the bottom line not be that he broke a law?

I can't wait to see what they've got on him. It'll be like how they got Al Capone for tax evasion. Any charge will do if you can make it stick.

So much winning.

Quoth the WaPo:

House can view Trump's tax records, appeals court rules

A federal appeals court panel ruled Tuesday that House Democrats are entitled to review Donald Trump's tax returns for 2015 to 2020, rejecting several legal arguments by the former president, who has sought for years to keep his financial records private.

The decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit was a victory for the House Ways and Means Committee, whose chairman, Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.), first requested in 2019 that the Internal Revenue Service turn over copies of Trump's tax returns to the committee. The Treasury Department initially declined, and the issue has been tied up in litigation ever since.

Trump has a week to appeal the panel's ruling, including asking the full appellate court to hear the case, before the judgment takes effect. Trump's attorney Cameron T. Norris, who is handling the appeal, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) applauded the decision, calling it "an important victory for the rule of law."

"Access to the former president's tax returns is crucial to upholding the public interest, our national security and our Democracy," Pelosi said in a statement. "We look forward to the IRS complying with this ruling and delivering the requested documents so that Ways and Means can begin its oversight responsibilities of the mandatory presidential audit program."

But wait! There's more!

Judge rules Giuliani must testify Aug. 17 in Georgia probe

A Georgia judge ruled Tuesday that Rudy Giuliani must testify in person on Aug. 17 to the Atlanta special grand jury investigating potential interference in the 2020 election by Donald Trump and his allies.

Fulton Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney said the date "gives (Giuliani) a week and a day to sort out whether he would travel by private coach or bus or whatever it would be."

The decision comes after Giuliani's lawyers filed an emergency motion delaying his testimony for health concerns, saying that he is unable to travel to Atlanta. The lawyers argued, as they had in court filings, that Giuliani cannot travel by plane because of a recent heart operation, instead contending that he should delay testimony or appear virtually.

McBurney said that he "doesn't want to jeopardize (Giuliani's) recovery" but noted that ground travel, such as by bus or train, did not appear to contradict the former Trump lawyer's health needs as outlined by doctors advising the court.

Lawyers for the Fulton County district attorney's office argued that Giuliani, 78, had traveled to New Hampshire after his heart procedure without issue and also said they had obtained evidence that Giuliani had purchased plane tickets in cash to Switzerland and Italy, claims Giuliani's team disputed on Tuesday.

"It's like driving to New Hampshire three times, so just do it in three legs," McBurney said of driving from New York to Atlanta. "I'm confident we could figure out a way for the breakdown that will get him to Atlanta that's not an airplane."

The special grand jury investigation has met pushback from former president Donald Trump's inner circle as prosecutors have worked to obtain testimony from those most directly connected with the former president's efforts to undermine Georgia's elections, underscoring the extent to which the criminal probe has expanded over the summer.

Looks like the charges could be for mishandling documents. He took classified docs out of the White House and stashed them at Mar a Lago. They reckon he tore documents up regularly that should have been kept.  If he's found guilty it could be enough to stop him from running for office again. I see Pence is getting with the "leave poor Donald alone" and "I'm going to investigate the DoJ" bandwagon. Hedging his bets for a 2024 presidential run?

Actually this is great for conservatives

First of all if they find nothing then it's a huge win for Trump

If they do find something it opens the door for Desantis who would be a much better candidate in 2024

Seems like it was 15 boxes of presidential materials stolen by Trump from the White House, including classified documents that could put national security at risk. The National Archives have been requesting the missing docs for months.  This makes Watergate look like nothing.

Better as in he'll be more gracious in defeat than Trump?

Trump set the bar so low it's subterranean.
