Quote from: Mourne Red on July 14, 2026, 10:01:36 PMFor 75/80 minutes you'd be hard pushed to find a better midfield performance since Barca golden days.

Cucurella fantastic on a yellow card too.
Brilliant. Poked one away from Mbappe as he went to pull the trigger. Hopefully they can repeat in the final.

Me too. Have to hope between the Argies and the Spaniards they get the job done.

Quote from: Baile BrigĂn 2 on July 14, 2026, 03:28:57 PMI'm asking if the GAA has a formal review mechanism for elite referees like other sports. It's not complicated.

If you put are referees assessed in GAA into Google it says they are. I know from speaking to an assessor they do it for club matches in Derry. And am pretty certain we are not ahead of the game in this.
Assessors are obviously good but who then assesses them?
Incorrect decisions only matter to the defeated team. I don't think refs have as much control on the outcome of games as people think.
Refs in Armagh definitely assessed at club games, you know because they turn into greater pricks than usual :D.

Ah refs/officials absolutely do effect games hugely, especially at the top level the margins are so small. Probably 3 levels to the big calls on Sunday, the ghost goal was impossible to call in real time in fairness, will forgive that one. In my view the penalty is definitely not a penalty, but in real time can see why it was given. The square ball was a horrendous decision and absolutely wrong (unless you're Pat Spillane).

So there's a 9 point swing that another day goes Dublins way, so of course they have a huge impact.

I'll take a stab at towards who could be selected.

If Kerry win the All-Ireland final

Shane Murphy (Kerry)
Jason Foley (Kerry)
Donnacha McHugh (Mayo)
Enda Hession (Mayo)
Charlie McMorrow (Dublin)
Dara McDonnell (Louth)
Mike Breen (Kerry)
Mark O'Shea (Kerry)
Joe O'Connor (Kerry)
Brandon Kelly (Westmeath)
Paudie Clifford (Kerry)
Kobe McDonald (Mayo)
David Clifford (Kerry)
Dylan Geaney (Kerry)
Ryan O'Donoghue (Mayo)

If Mayo win the All-Ireland final

Jack Livingstone (Mayo)
Jason Foley, (Kerry)
Donnacha McHugh (Mayo)
Enda Hession (Mayo)
Charlie McMorrow (Dublin)
Dara McDonnell (Louth)
David McBrien (Mayo)
Mark O'Shea (Kerry)
Joe O'Connor (Kerry)
Brandon Kelly (Westmeath
Darragh Beirne (Mayo)
Kobe McDonald (Mayo)
David Clifford (Kerry)
Dylan Geaney (Kerry)
Ryan O'Donoghue (Mayo)

The selection process as ever the winner  gets 7 or 8.  Semi-finalists Louth and Dublin should get at least 1.

All star to Westmeath winning Leinster against the odds and I believe only David Clifford scored more from play in the championship than Brandon Kelly. Finally I think it will be a rare year of no Ulster player getting All Star.
As much as it pains me to say it, would probably be unfair in Con Kilpatrick not to get one. Absolutely brilliant against Armagh in the Athletic Grounds and against Kerry.

I think Kilpatrick might lose out with Tyrone not getting closer to the business end - Keeper and Midfield seem to be two of the areas where a player's team nearly always has to get to a semi-final to have a chance.
yeah probably won't get one but if I was picking a team he'd be in it. Morgan robbed one off Blaine in 2024 having only reached a preliminary qf.  Beggan was a strong candidate for one pre getting injured, this year the goalkeeper could come down to who has a good final, both been excellent.

Quote from: DuffleKing on July 14, 2026, 12:21:10 PMBeirne has been more effective than Kobe this year surely. There's a fair bit of wasted ball with Kobe.
Maybe one gets young footballer of the year and the other gets a all star? Kobe will definitely get something with the name and hype around him and this game being a sort of send off before Oz.  Beirne probably done more damage though.

But so called experts shouldn't be going on 1 sided rants.
You know you're going to get a wee bit of bias from a Kerry/Dublin whatever pundit. Be worse if they went the other way to avoid being seen as biased like Neville in the soccer.

2 big games in a row now the marginal calls and blatant calls have went to Kerry.

Quote from: Maroon Manc on July 14, 2026, 08:24:30 AMThe power of the media has never been so obvious in the last few days.

How I've laughed at the meltdown from some pundits and ex Dublin players, didn't want to know 2 weeks ago when David Gough rode Galway from start to finish. Paul Flynn should be banished from the Sunday Game for his nonsense.

At the start of the match there was an incident similar to the penalty, except much softer, where O Cofaigh-Byrne turned into a Kerry player and fell over resulting in a 2 pointer for Dublin.

Sean O'Shea was taken out of it with a late sliding tackle as he offloaded the ball - no free.

A lineball for Kerry ended up overturned for a phantom free to Dublin.

Scully attacked 2 Kerry players on his way out from the Kerry goalline clearance. At a minimum, 2 yellow cards.

Any of these dodgy Dublin decisions discussed by any of the Sunday Game pundits or any other pundits? Of course not, that'd be balanced punditry.

That one was a foul on a man going down for the ball, don't think I remember the others tbh.

And Scully "attacked" the Kerry boys, have a word with yourself lol

Quote from: maddog on July 14, 2026, 08:24:31 AMConor McCarthy not in with a shout. Thought he was very good each match
yeah thought he was very good myself, good few from Monaghan in with a shout of nominations.

Tough year to pick with the fact provincial winners usually get one and then there are another 6 teams on top of that who had decent to good years 3 provincial winners, then probably Monaghan, Cork (Sherlock), Tyrone, Louth and Dublin will all feel like they could have a few nominations and that's before you mention the 2 finalists.

If I had to guess
Westmeath x1
Louth x1
Dublin x2
Mayo x5
Kerry x6.

Stephen O'Hanlon,Conn Kilpatrick and Niall Devlin

Forgot about him, super year.

Would be strange for neither Connacht or Ulster winners not to get one but given we did nothing afterwards it's looking likely. Mad after the Ulster final I thought Conaty was in with a big shout of footballer of the year.

Quote from: Captain Obvious on July 13, 2026, 07:23:03 PM2nd year of the All-Ireland semi-finals done and dusted under the new rules none of the 4 games was close to what FRC hoped for let's be honest.

2nd year in a row we got a mis-match at the semi final stage. Credit to Mayo,Donegal going about their business though no neutrals wants to see a non contest semi-final.

Kerry had a routine win against Tyrone last year and yesterday was probably the worst quality Kerry v Dublin match since 2015 and that game had the excuse of poor weather.

2021 to 2024 All-Ireland semi-finals had Armagh beating Kerry,Tyrone beating Kerry and Mayo beating Dublin after extra time all memorable contests.

Also had Galway beating Donegal by 2 points,Kerry beat Dublin by 1 and Kerry beating Derry by 2.

Biggest margin win of all those All-Ireland semi-finals was Dublin by 7 points against Monaghan and that match was level with 10 minutes to play.
It's probably still too small a sample size for the new rules but I do think the old rules weren't as bad as people made out, especially summer football. As you correctly point out there were some unreal games in the latter stages of 2021 to 2024. 2024 final was terrible though, which helped people support the new rules.

Obvious bias aside I still don't get this narrative about the 2024 final. Both commentators and the RTE pundits were full of praise on the day. Fitzmaurice on several occasions described it as the best final of recent years.
Hell of a lot better than the 2025 shit show, in fact probably better than any game from quarter final stage on since then? Bar Kerry and Tyrone this year?
