General discussion / Retirement of a legend

French rally driver Sebastian Loeb to retire, having won 9 consecutive World titles, and a record number of WRC events. Won on all surfaces and seldom if ever had a major off. A true legend and arguably the greatest driver of all time.

General discussion / Vincent O'Brien RIP
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:06:02 AM »
Surprised nobody has yet commented on the passing of this icon, perhaps the greatest sporting personage this country has ever produced. Conquered the jumps scene in the 50s with wins in the Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champions Hurdle before turning his attention to the flat where he had multiple wins in the classics, including 6 (or 7?) Derby winners with some of the most famous horses of all time e.g. Nijinsky, Sir Ivor. His alliance with Roert Sangster and Lester Piggott was the most successful in horse racing and later he was instrumental in setting up the world-famous Coolmore stud with son-in-law John Magnier. O'Brien was one of the most reasons why Ireland now enjoys the reputation it does in horse racing.

Because he retired from training in 1994, younger readers on this board may not appreciate his greatness, but imagine Matt Busby and Alex Ferguson rolled into one - this was his stature and record of achievement. A collosus and a true legend.

General discussion / Italy v Ireland

Giving that we struggled at home to Bulgaria, we are away to the current world champions (although currently unconvincing) and we are missing one of our better players (McGeady), do Italy even at 4/9 look a very good bet?

General discussion / Oscar nominations

Announced a short while ago with no great surprises;

In Best Picture, Slumdog Millionaire will be favourite with the rest of the field roughly equal; with Obama in the White House America will like feel-good so the favourite will be justified IMHO.

Best director - Danny Boyle for the above; next favourite will be David Fincher for Benjamin Button I'd say

Best Actor; Mickey Rourke has been flagged for a long time now but Sean Penn has good reviews for Milk and the veteran Frank Langella will be a very good outside bet - prediction Langella

Best Actress - Kate Winslet is clear favourite here, especially since the Globes. Anne Hathaway has momentum but Winslet to get it.

Supporting actor; good field here - Philip Seymour Hoffman is always watchable and Josh Brolin improves every time out. Heath Ledger for his schockly turn in Batman has the wind behind him though and will get it. Cue tears and faux emotion.

Supporting actress; weak enough line-up. Tomei has one so Penelope Cruz may get it. Forgettable sector this week.

Animated feature; Wall-E

... after an illness. As good a screen (and stage, apparently) actor as you will ever see. See his performances in The Train, A Man For All Seasons and Quiz Show for reference.
