GAA Discussion / Re: Cross player claims racial abuse

A Kilcoo fan has been banned for life by the Ulster Council according to the BBC. Makes you wonder why a lifetime ban for Joe Soap in the stand and only a four month ban for an intercounty player on the pitch. Once again no comment from Ulster Council.

Anyone seen the new Down shirt that's rumoured to be imminent?

Is there any way of knowing which counties will be changing their jerseys soon? Just don't want to splash cash on Christmas presents if they are going to be out of date in a few months.

Purchased the book this morning. Looking forward to reading it as I'm a sucker for tactics books. I must have read Jonathan Wilson's Inverting The Pyramid about the evolution of soccer tactics about a dozen times.

You would think one of the teams would play in their away kits. It's hard to make out what's going on at times.

GAA Discussion / Re: Dún na nGall v Cill Dara

I think McGeeney's fast losing credibility with the constant whining about referee decisions going against them. The goal conceded against Down last year was obviously a square ball, but at the same time Kildare's goal in that game should also have been wiped off the scoreline. Some of the tackling from Kildare on Saturday was ridiculous and wouldn't have looked out of place on a rugby pitch but there was no mention of that oddly enough.

In the 1992 AISF v Mayo there was a colour clash.  Donegal changed to yellow and Mayo to Red.

After they won they decided it was lucky and kept to the yellow with green trim for the final and have done so since.

Sligo did something similiar after they beat Kildare in Croke Park in the qualiiifiers.

They had changed to their second strip (all black) because of the colour clash and then decided to stick with it.
In fact I think they may even have been fined for doing so.
Apparantly you can't change your 'colours' mid season.

So after 1992, and apart from yesterday, what did Donegal win in the lucky new shirts?

GAA Discussion / Donegal jerseys

I'm beginning to sound like I'm obsessed with jerseys but didn't Donegal used to wear green shirts with gold hoops like Kerry. What was the reason for the change in 92?

You heard it here first!!

Saturday 23rd July

6PM Down v Cork  Croke Park

Doesn't that contradict what someone said above about TV3 having live coverage at 7pm?

Meath haven't since 1986.

They have, against Donegal in 1990 and 2002

Begod you're right. Presumably it's because Donegal's second colours are the Ulster yellow, so Meath can't use their similar gold colours against them.

Why do Kildare need a second strip?

Under my 'flawless' system, you could increase it so all teams play their three group rivals home and away, giving each county six games a season guaranteed, plus any games they get in the provincial. To be fair though I haven't heard any suggestion that somebody else hasn't said is flawed, so who knows?

I imagine both sides will wear the kits they wore in the All-Ireland Final.

I didn't say scrap the provincials, I said play them. I only suggested scrapping the league.

Scrap the National League and play Provincial championships. Then depending on how you do in that, you'll be seeded in four distinct bands. The provincial champions and runners-up will be seeded in top bracket and each one will be top seeds in eight seperate groups like the Champions League with each county getting three guaranteed games before the last 16 knockout starts, then onto the quarter final etc.

I like the fact Down's second kit is yellow, because it's tradition that in a clash of colours you wear your province's colours - but most counties have ignored this in favour of merchandising opportunities. Only Down, Galway, Meath and Kerry seem to adhere to tradition in this respect.
