Quote from: seafoid on March 28, 2024, 02:24:12 PMPearse Doherty was on Claire Byrne now and he spoke a lot of sense. The Government sould take account of what is happening now and decide on fuel tax increases based on that. The idea that SF are out of touch is pure gaslighting.

The other thing is that FG do not own the flag and neither do they own Irishness.

Fuel in the south going up on Monday - not an April Fool either!

Petrol up by 4c and diesel going up by 3c a litre.

Some petrol stations on the southern side may close up.

Just 5 years ago. In fairness some turn around in fortunes for Derry but they never were a division 4 side anyway.

Just four players from that starting team still playing. The new players introduced improved the quality significantly.

Fair play to Leitrim.

A small county population wise and club wise as well as being hit hard by emmigration and lads working away from home etc.

Great to see them play in Croke Park.

If I were to hazard a guess, "far right" (by the standards of this board) will get somewhere between 15-20% of first preference votes in the next General Election

Whitey, you might as well ask a dog to estimate how far it is to the moon than ask you to estimate first preference in votes in a southern election from America. I would say max 3% and will get no one elected as only the brain dead would vote for them and no one will transfer to them.

There are are large cohort of people who are not ''Far Right'' and all that jargon who will vote for certain principles these candidates stand for. There is a huge disconnect between the Major Parties and the Electorate. There will be many who will privately do a rebellious vote.

Sinn Fein are in bother. They have lost ground in the many disadvantaged areas they would have been sailing through.

SF are no longer seen as an alternative for change,

I know I won't be voting for FF/FG/SF/Greens.

I think you're right. SF need to ask the hard questions on why, according to the recent opinion polls, that they're dropping 2 or 3 points.

Why are FG TD's opting out in their droves?

Why are FF lads going independent?

I think there'll be a good block of independents in the locals in early June.

Quote from: seafoid on March 24, 2024, 05:34:38 PM19 wides. 10 frees sent wide.

Clare went up the gears when needed but in general the standard of hurling was poor over the weekend and whilst it may not have looked like it the Down lads say there was quite a lot of sand on the pitch in Portlaoise which probably contributed to the bunching, inability to rise the ball first time etc etc which ensured the game didn't really have any pace to it.

Tipp will be concerned, unsure of the spine of their team, does Maher come out to 6, who goes back in to 3, centre forward is probably where they should be playing Bonnar Maher IMO but they to find a balance in there and lads who can get the most out of Forde and Morris who need the ball in early and in space to cause defences problems.

Clare content that they've a panel now going into championship but Kelly and O'Donnell need game time and surely the final is the place to get them some. Even Ryan Taylor and David McInerney haven't featured to date and are allegedly back to full fitness.
One concern for Clare is that they don't think John Conlan has 70 minutes in him and a stand in centre back isn't Seadna Morey in all fairness. Conlan has played some hurling in the last year with club and county and he isn't getting any younger but he is their talisman and there's more to replacing him than just for his hurling!
David Fitzgerald is a beast of a hurler, size, speed and skill, Clare need him in the game a lot more, but what a weapon.

Championship is 25% faster than league. Touch and accuracy are far better. A loss like that may be better for Tipp in the long run if they are honest and want to learn from it.
Clare are probably better overall.
The provincial harness is unfair on Munster because there are 5 decent teams and in Leinster there aren't.

Yet no one in Munster will ever question the fairness of the current format!
Whenever the first congress is where they review the new system there will probably be timber.
Cheddar, Colm O'rourke, Jim McGuinness and Colm Bonnar have all spoken with authority about the flaws of the system, , focusing on injuries, the lack of downtime and the fitness levels required.

Here's a novel idea:

Stop fleecing lads at trainings. Keep them fresh.

Did bringing  in the big guns (Dara O Briain, Patrick Kielty, Adrian Dunbar and the  other fella) help swing it?

Probably having Sarah Mulkerrin as anchor was key.

Yes you hit the nail on the head there.
You think Football is life and death, especially with some of the chat on here!!

The topic around Moneyglass on Saturday evening/Sunday afternoon was whether smileys red card was deserved or not.
And then......

I suppose the thing to be made aware is now, amongst all us men, is to talk. Talk more, ask your friend how you're keeping.
Whether its in the middle of a session, 6 pints in, or driving along in the car and the craic is good. Ask the question. Cause no one knows.

Yes, 99.9% of the time you're going get the standard answer - yes all good.

But maybe one time, someone will open up lives will saved.

Well said.

Quote from: Blowitupref on March 26, 2024, 07:43:19 PMJim McGuinness on current scheduling.

"The whole thing is blurred. One thing to the next thing to the next thing. There is no gap.

"There is no opportunities. It is hard to develop a team as well when you are constantly playing. Listen, we basically are managing, we took in eight kids, U20s, to bring us up to 40.

"For most of this national league and preseason, we have been operating with 22 to 24, that is the reality.

"Sometimes you are down 50 per cent of availability. Most of them were issues that had to be sorted out from last year and have followed through.

"There is a huge residue in terms of the split season, people coming in injured, trying to get people up to a level. I haven't experienced this level really in my life.

"We are trying to find a way to get as many back on the pitch as possible. We haven't had everyone on the pitch at the one time yet, I am looking forward to that.

"The more it goes on I'm not even sure it will happen. When I was manager of Donegal previously, you always had injuries that is why you carry a couple extra.

There is a strong element of managers and players being on tenterhooks because one slip. Time frames are so tight and you could miss everything. Literally everything.

"Even if you do get back are you going to be at the level to compete because of the intensity of the games you are going into. It is tricky, really tricky for players."

Meanwhile Kieran McGeeney reckons all pre-season competitions need to be scrapped a total waste of time. He would prefer the NFL to start in the first week of January and two have home and away matches with 14 league games instead of 7.

Carrying a panel of 40 but only has 22 training?

Jimmy not happy but it's only for about 2% of players.

As I said before, why do they have to train so much between matches?

Quote from: marty34 on March 25, 2024, 08:43:46 AMOn  similiar vein to this road safety issue, I think it should be complusory that anyone out walking, day or evening, should have a hi-viz vest on.

The amount of people I see out at dusk walking, wear black/dark clothes is scary.

Plus all school uniforms and bags should have a few hi-viz strips or reflections on them.  I'd say it'd be simple enough to design and install.

If roads are so dangerous that people have to dress like construction workers just to go about their daily business then we've got a serious problem that no amount of high-viz is going to fix.

Bit arrogant that answer and not addressing the issue I raised about people out walking at dusk with dark clothes on nor re: school uniforms.

But hey anything for a quick quip.

So you want to live in a society where we all walk about our streets looking like we just stepped off a building site? Are you serious?

I walk bendy, hilly country roads every evening for 4-6 miles.

I will have a hi-vis on me if there's any chance at all, that I'll be out during or after dusk.

Why?

Because it requires no effort to do, but makes everyone else's life's easier who is using the same roads. Which means there's less chance of me getting killed.

But I suppose i am a rational person, capable of seeing the bigger picture. Cyclists like yourself Eamon, you're not rational people.

But Eamon knows best!

A simple cost effective way to help save lives.

I see agood few people wearing them...but not enough.

The reflective school uniform and school bags stripes is a no-brainer.
