Will SDLP/ Ulster Unionists and Conservative whatever they are called gain?

Will the TUV get any seats?

Does anyone really care?

Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he was awarded it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to strengthen international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.

There were a record 205 nominations for this year's prize. Zimbabwe's prime minister and a Chinese dissident had been among the favourites.

The laureate - chosen by a five-member committee - wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10m Swedish kronor ($1.4m).

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said as the prize was announced.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Fake tan crack down at Fylde school

Spray tan being discouraged by school bosses

Published Date: 22 July 2008
By Joe Robinson
A FYLDE coast school has outlawed "orange" pupils by cracking down on fake tan.
Girls who follow to the extreme the bronzed fashion trend set by the likes of Coleen McLoughlin, Christina Aguilera and Victoria Beckham will face the wrath of teachers at Baines School in Poulton.

Acting headteacher Carol Robinson has written to all parents advising them on uniform and appearance standards ahead of the new school year in September.

Beauty

She said: "The current trend for fake/spray tans does little to enhance the appearance of our young ladies.

"We ask for your support in ensuring girls do not come to school looking varying shades of orange."

Mrs Robinson said the school strived to "promote natural beauty and contentment with one's own looks".

But health campaigners say the letter could potentially send out a harmful message as fake tan is seen as a safe alternative to the use of sunbeds while others – including pupils – have backed the action.

The school has drawn short of a complete ban, with Mrs Robinson stating: "We're simply asking for parents' support in ensuring that it isn't over-the-top.

"Of course we appreciate a false tan is probably much healthier than lying out in the sun for hours.

"We're asking for co-operation in ensuring our pupils do not arrive for school in various shades of orange."

But Susan Young, from spray tan experts Ambiance Day Spa, at Bannatyne's Gym, said: "I can't believe the school is saying this.

"Girls will be girls and spray tans and fake tans are a much safer alternative to sunbeds.

"It might force kids to go on sunbeds and, at the end of the day, if you look nice it helps you to be more bubbly and confident."

Dr John Kellett, a Blackpool-based consultant dermatologist, said it was better for pupils to use fake tan than go on sunbeds.

He said: "Fake tan doesn't do any harm at all to health.

"If the alternative is for young girls to go on the sunbed then it is preferable.

"However, whether that will happen I can't say."

Some pupils at the school spoke up in support of their teachers.

Alison Taylor, a 17-year-old sixth former, said: "I agree fake tan should be banned. I think it looks a lot nicer to be natural than bright orange."

Friend Sarah Clark, 17, added: "I think the rule is a good idea.

"Fake tan can be OK, but some people go a bit over-the-top and then I think it looks quite tacky. It isn't nice if somebody looks bright orange, especially for school."

One parent of a year seven pupil, who asked not to be named, added: "I see the girls walking past when I take my daughter to school and their legs are all orange.

Compulsory

"I think the school is right to clamp down and try to drive up standards because there are other issues like the length of skirts the girls wear which are miles too short and the lads having their shirts all hanging out."

The school has banned false or acrylic finger nails amid health and safety concerns they could come off during PE.

Mrs Robinson added: "Nails should be worn short and well manicured without colour or glitter."

Shoes must also be black and the wearing of a school blazer is compulsory for years seven to 11.

And the parents or guardians of girls who "blatantly ignore" the recommended length of a skirt will be asked to purchase the redesigned school trouser.

Fake tan was among "style crimes" discouraged by officials at Royal Ascot races this year.

And one Glasgow school actually encouraged its pupils to use the artificial orange pigment rather than using sunbeds by bringing in a tanning expert to show how to do it properly.

A spokesman from Teenage Cancer Trust, the national charity which helps teenagers fight cancer, added: "We would hope that pupils would never revert to using sunbeds, which can cause skin cancer."

A spokesman for Lancashire Education Authority said dress code and appearance were matters for individual schools.

It is with great sadness that Celtic Football Club confirmed this morning that Tommy Burns has passed away.  Tommy, a true Celtic Legend and wonderful man will be sadly missed by us all.  Clearly, our thoughts are very much with Tommy's wife Rosemary and his family at this extremely difficult time.
