Regardless of leaving McGinn on the bench (I'm not sure what he has to do to start a game), how Mowbray can pick Samaras consistently ahead of Scot McDonald is beyond me. Samaras needs 4 or 5 good chances to grab a goal whereas McDonald just needs a sniff. I need to be convinced about Mowbray he's left a lot to be desired so far.

There was a little piece in today's Times about an NIO report from 1979.

QuoteAlan Huckle, formerly of the Northern Ireland Office, said the "question of national identity" had always dominated election in the Fermanagh/ Tyrone constituency because of its proximity to the border and "remoteness from national politics". He added: "Co. Fermanagh has a Catholic population that is nationalist... and they are popularly regarded as being slower and more rural that their colleagues in Dungannon and Coalisland."

The present MP for the area is Michelle Gildernew, who is also the assembly's agriculture minister. So yes on the rural bit, then, but you couldn't call Gildernew slow. Not compare with Dungannon and Coalisland anyway.

Now I'm not sure if John Burns realises that Dungannon is in the Fermanagh and South Tyrone constituency but as a politics journalist writing for a national newspaper and trying to be funny, he probably should. And then there is the small point of Gildernew living a hell of a lot closer to Dungannon than she does to Fermanagh.

In spite of this it's quite clear still that Mr Huckle in the NIO was indeed correct.  ;)

Pretty sure Paul McGrath was 10. He was in there somewhere anyway. I'd have thought that Barry McGuigan should have been in there with a shout.

Not a word of Michelle Smith either- how many other Irish sports people hold 4 olympic medals?  :P

I had heard somewhere that Neil McCloy was staying with Derrylaughin and Paul McFlynn was joining him.

Heard this evening from a pretty reliable source that McKinless has got the job .

Hub often attends 12 mass in Clonoe. Strangely, never when Fr. Fee is saying it.

He wouldn't be the first one to dodge Fr Fee. He'd have my sympathies there

I'd just wonder to what extent is the panel affected by those on McKenna Cup duty with their college. I'm sure there may be others looked at depending on their performances for college teams in the McKenna cup

Mr McHugh would need to be worried about his own vote. During the local by-election last year his daughter polled 2.5% of the vote. That Sinn Féin won't get two seats here in another Assembly election is unthinkable- so it'll be between the SDLPs Tommy Gallagher and McHugh of Fianna Fail for the last 'nationalist' seat.

I know from a couple of friends from the north who are in Fianna Fáil that they are seeking to enter assembly elections in 2011. They can't do this until it get Ard Fheis approval and so while McHugh may be a Fianna Fail member, he isn't technically a Fianna Fail member of the Assembly at least not until this is approved by an Ard Fheis and registered in the assembly as such.

With all the links to Father Ted, Ardal O'Hanlon and Arthur Matthews involved in bringing the program about, perhaps people expected too much.

One question that does need to be asked is, can RTE make the kind of cutting satire that can be made in Britain? Would Father Ted have been as good had it been made by RTE and not Channel 4? Can't see it oddly enough

Barry mulligan- vaguely rem him as minor. How come he never made the step up to senior?

There was great hope for him to make the grade. His minor displays were excellent.

what age is he?

Well he was on the 2001 minor team with Sean Cavanagh, Peter Donnelly Joe McMahon, John Devine, Martin Penrose and a number of others so at a guess I'd say he must be around the 26/27 mark at this stage. Possibly the player after Sean and Peter Donnelly that the most was expected of at senior level but never really made the break through.

'I was expecting it to be a bit more blood-and-thunder than it was but maybe it has moderated its views over the years.'

You obviously didn't read its Letters page, then...
Letters pages are always full of cranks, oddballs and attention seekers in any newspaper.

Very true ... who's that wing-nut from Cork who's always attacking Northern nationalists in the Indo, Irish times and Tribune?

That would be Eoghan Harris- political chameleon and senator. Started life in the Worker's Party and RTE producer, did a little work with the Ulster Unionists and backed Bertie on the Late Late before the last General Election. He was then duly rewarded with a seat in Seanad following the election (in true Bertie jobs for the boys fashion). Not a pleasant man either in print or in person by all accounts.

Ted Ginn has some wheels on him

That he does. Maybe it was the threat of being cut from the starting wide receiver job that eventually got some productivity out of him. He's caused Dolphins fans (like myself) to tear their hair out on more than one occasion. Let's hope the Dolphins can kick on from here.

Cmon the...the...what would ye say - Fianna/Rahillys/Cillies?

There would be a lot of angry Brocagh, Derrylaughan, Derrytresk and Brackaville men with that assessment of Naomh Colum Cille I can assure you. Team for Coalisland and Clonoe parishes

Erm, not meant to be taken seriously fellow.

Just making sure! Been living in the shadow of that particular big two or long enough! Can't having them taking all the credit for the hurlers as well. lol

Congrats to the Cilles and the Derrytresk camogs who also picked up some Ulster silverware today.

There were a few there that weren't too bad. You missed the worst Fergie signing of all by the way.

Step forward Mr William Prunier
