GAA Discussion / Re: Derry V Donegal Ulster final 2022

I think we are seeing Derry at their absolute best to be honest, I don't think there are any more levels to their game.  They are structured well but seem to lack any real top class individuals.
Shane McGuigan walks on to any team in Ireland.

McGuigan/Rogers/McKaigue/Doherty/McKinless get on any team in Ireland.

Glass not far off either!

Six of the best fifteen footballers in Ireland are in Derry?

south Derry have a great chance in this match from what I'm hearing and reading.
Are we talking Tobermore or Upperlands? Say what you’re hearing.

Áth an Phoirt Leathain had a club until the early 70s. Tirgarvil Seán Mac Diarmada.

Squeezed out on all sides by Kilrea, Lavey, Glen, Slaughtneil and Swatragh.

Working from home. Constantly drinking tea. Literally buckets of the stuff.

Literally? Out of a bucket? Jesus…

Yip, a big ceramic bucket.

The Tyrone people around me seemed to dislike Gallagher more than they disliked any and all Derry folk.

Why is that?

There are occasions where I am happy to admit I know f**k all about football.

Today was one such occasion.

Old enough to know you have good days and bad days.

Tyrone had a poor day. We had a magnificent day.

Good luck to both teams for the rest of the year.

Derry should have beaten us in 03.

Bradley put on some show in the drawn game and then in typical Derry fashion shit the bed in the replay and the game was over at half time.

Yeah, rewrite history there why don’t you. Bradley destroyed mcmenanin the first day so Tyrone triple marked him the second day. Also most of the Derry players weren’t focused on that game because of a terrible tragedy which happened the evening before.

McManamin didn’t start the drawn game, if my memory is correct.

Fergal doc missed a chance to put Derry four up near the end.

But square_ball sounds like a classy chap.

Looks like I was right on both counts. First game I ever saw an imaginary card being waved.

On the management. The debate was had at the time of his appointment but it was futile. His supporters dug in and backed their man all the way. He knew how to win as a player. He knows what a good setup looks like etc etc.

Louth went for Mickey Harte and appear to have kicked on. We went for a boy who did a locka months in Swatragh.

Have you ever done a locka months in Swatragh?
Until you have, don’t doubt McGinley’s undoubted abilities.

Twin Grimleys and their brother Paul played on the same armagh team in the 80s. There was a few Killeavey O'Neill brothers on the Armagh panel in the same era, before Gareth decided he preferred Crossmaglen obviously.

Started with Newry Bosco, then killeavy, then Cooley.

Jack Nicklaus raging.

How many of the five McGoldrick brothers from the Port would have played on the same Derry team?

Catch above head height with both feet off the ground.
And the defensive mark on the same terms.

Otherwise against it.

Ref his feet weren't both off the ground!!! he was/wasn't inside the 45... He didn't raise his arm ref!!

Surely you could handle that?

GAA Discussion / Re: Top 5 players of all time from your county

To be fair to the different playing positions in any team, I have decided to use poetic licence to select my SEVEN all time best Derry county players  ie one goalkeeper, two defenders, two midfielders and two forwards. (and I have seen them all!).
Goalkeeper :John Somers
Defenders: Kieran McKeever,Tony Scullion.
Midfielders : Jim McKeever,Anthony Tohill
Forwards : Mickey Niblock,SeanO'Connell.
Honorary Members:Sean Martin Lockhart,Henry Diamond,Henry Downey,Anthony McGurk,Gerry
                             O'Loughlin.Fergal Doherty,Gerry McElhinney,Mark Lynch,Enda Muldoon and Paddy

Excellent post. I think big Damien is certainly worthy of at least a mention as keeper. And I would add Mickey Lynch to your honorary members.

But getting back to the original post, I think it’s impossible to name five. Tohill and Jim mckeever are the only two certs. Sean O’Connell merits a mention for longevity and being the only Derry man with four ulster senior medals. Henry as captain in 93 also. But couldn’t narrow it down to five.

Scullion is a cert surely??

Very close yes, but others would make arguments for mckeever, Downey and Lockhart too as defenders. I’d have scullion ahead of all three btw.

Geoffrey still tog out?

Thinking about converting him to a full back to mark big Audi.
