U20 hurlers - in typical Laois style - beaten by a point by a poor Offaly side. Laois the better team, but Offaly were fitter, and I suppose, mentally had it on Laois. Unfortunate mistake near the end let them in for a goal, and they also won a free near the end for handling on the ground, when that certainly wasn't the case. Good displays from Hugh Whelan, the two Deegans, and Eoghan Murphy was good on frees from distance. No free-taker in the forwards, though. They have Dublin and Meath next, and I don't think Meath are too bad.

U19s were hammered by Kilkenny in their semi-final last night - predictably enough - and U17s beat Kildare on a score-line you'd expect from a bad football match (before the new rules!).

This Under 19 competition is one of the most ridiculous concepts.
And am I correct in saying that there are guys hurling U19 for Laois who wouldn't hurl U20 when asked?

Genocide Organ

Yup. And visa versa, believe it or not.

Smallballbigballs

There's merit to the U19, but don't read too much into it lads.

Disappointing re the 20s, we can't afford to miss them opportunities. Still, the weather was utter shit and while it was the same for both it turned it into a lottery.

Good to get out of hawkfield with a win in shit weather, we usually lose those to them due to their physicality at underage in comparison to us.

Verbal

What do you think the merit to U19 is out of interest?

The best U17s will be with the 20s the following year.
It's an unusually small number of a squad to be carrying.

I presume you're coming at it from a "keeping them involved in a county set up pov"?

Smallballbigballs

Some clubs have very below par set ups. Keeping players involved gives us some chance of continuing to monitor and advance their development. It doesn't interfere to any great extent, or shouldn't

Verbal

Fair enough.
I suppose if it gets guys on a track of developing their S&C.
Is it graded at all?

Unusual to see Laois hammer Offaly like that, and then to run into Kilkenny.

U19 is basically a lot of the U20 'additional panel members' plus a few others. Last year was the first year of it, and they basically didn't train, and there was minimal interest in it. This year there seems to be a better management team, and in theory it's a good stepping stone. However, as said, some lads still regard it as burdensome, or beneath them. I suppose they might miss out on some club games because of it, or they might be peeved because they didn't make the U20 team. I don't think anyone takes it that seriously.

Kilkenny U19s easily beat our U20s in a practice game recently. Not that that should be a big surprise.

Voice of tReason

I don't think the Un19s trained at all. Box ticking exercise. Kilkenny had dozens of collective training sessions.

Good win for the minors in desperate conditions. I tried watching it on clubber and it was a hard ask on young fellas. We had a club match abandoned for comparable conditions shortly after.
We have to play one of Offaly, Antrim or Westmeath to make it into Tier 1. Seemingly Antrim and Westmeath have strong teams so we'll know a lot more after next week.

The Un20s absolutely had the winning of the game but whether it was a lack of fitness or belief; they lost all momentum coming towards full-time. Felt for the keeper.
Tough ask against dublin and Meath then at homr in last game.

poor offaly side its 50 years since they last beat them in under 20 or under 21 .

Blueforever

Another bad beating at underage v Louth hopefully seniors can give us something to cheer at the weekend but would not be too hopeful(hope they can gives us at least one win in leinster championship) must be lowest level Laois football has been for years .
