The team of the decade thing was started by some journalists in the south before the 2008 All Ireland final  who couldn't accept Kerry were unable to beat Tyrone. So they thought Kerry were sure to win with the Twin Towers  ::) and Canavan retired.
Of course Tyrone scutted them again and was no word of the team of the decade again until this year's final. It was to diminish Tyrone's achievements. In the 70s it was the great Dublin-Kerry rivalry but no word of team of the decade carry-on or in any other decade. Is contrived bollox from those unable to accept..... Tyrone 3 Kerry 0  ;)

The best Tyrone can be credited with is "2nd best team of the decade" after the Kingdom. Simple really! Now if Tyrone had won lasy yrs AI they would rightly be acknowledged as TOTD as they would have had 4 AI's along with Kerry.

Strange that the so-called team of the decade always lost to the 2nd best team of the decade ... sort of an oxymoran  :o

Just to reprise an argument we had a number of years ago........

The decade doesn't end until 31st December 2010.

TYP is of course correct. I might get some backup this time.

On the 31st December 2010 we will have completed the first year of the teenies.

Here are the ten years that make up the first decade of the 21st century:
2000 1st year of the decade/century/millennium
2001 2nd year of the decade/century/millennium
2002 3rd year of the decade/century/milennium
2003 4th year of the decade etc
2004 5th year of the decade etc
2005 6th year of the decade etc
2006 7th year of the decade etc
2007 8th year of the decade etc
2008 9th year of the decade etc
2009 10th year of the decade etc

Imagine you start a stopwatch at the beginning of time.

The number opposite the following would read:

seconds: zero
minutes: zero
hours: zero
days: zero
months: zero
years: zero

After exactly one year the last line would read 1.

After exactly one millennium the last line would read 1000.

are you like four? its not an oxymoran, your a moran simple as that. kerry have 5 all irelands out of 10, the other 5 were not won by one team, do the maths. if kerry had played dublin 3 times and lost all three what difference would it make? none, if they had only met tyrone twice and lost would that have mattered? no.  its about ALL IRELANDS WON you have 3 in ther last 125 years. where is mick sheehy when i need him. .

Seriously lads, 16 pages on this?  ;)

Seems simple to me. Kerry won five, Tyrone three, Armagh and Galway one each. Game, set and match to the Kingdom.

History doesn't give a sh1t who beat who and who didn't beat who. All that matters is who won the All-Ireland.

Good luck to yourself and TYP convincing the world that the Y2K threshold was incorrect, and that the start of the 3rd millenium AD was actually the year 2001 and not 2000  :P ;)

Edit: that's not to say that you are not correct technically, of course, but hype does not respect reality, and for the purposes of confected awards the year 2010 will constitute one of the next decade, and not this one.

Good thing im not a historian then. As someone who watched Tyrone beat Kerry 3 times i'd say Tyrone were the better team, unless of course you can explain to me how the "team of the decade" never managed to beat tyrone in that decade.

How dare you suggest that?  Don't you know that Tyrone are the best team ever, not even in this decade but in the entire history of the GAA's 125 years?

We will probably be here again in a years time trying to educate these Tyrone boys on how to do their sums! Looks like that the British education system is not really working up there and the nordies cant get a grasp of simple arithmetic. ::)

sorry my apologies..... 3 > 5  :P
That's better.  Just as long as you understand, no slagging off Tyrone, ok?

Seriously, Im not slagging off tyrone, i think they are a fantastic team with some of my favourite players. But the suggestion that head to head results outweigh the celtic cross is lunacy. what person in their right mind would take 3 all irelands over 5? had tyrone won the all ireland in 2009 - at 4 apiece, then yes they would be team of the decade as that would be where head to head should come in.
