Chilling threat to customs workers

Cavan Echo

A Continuity IRA member issued a threat to custom officials working along the border and other civil servants during a republican commemoration in Cavan last week.
The threat was made following the unveiling of a Republican memorial just outside the County Cavan village of Swanlinbar last Saturday.
A man, claiming to represent the South Fermanagh Command of the CIRA, said custom officials and those who work for the northern Driver and Vehicle Testing Agency may soon be branded "legitimate targets".
In front of around 300 people in attendance, the masked man stated: "It has come to our attention that in recent weeks Customs and Excise and the DVLA have been collaborating with the RUC in the County Fermanagh area.
"We order them to desist immediately or we will be forced to label them legitimate targets."
Michael Og Lavelle, the co-ordinator of the Cavan/Fermanagh commemoration committee, declined to comment on the content of the statement.
"We of Republican Sinn Féin support the stance taken by the Continuity IRA but with regards to statements from that organisation, it is not for us to comment."
Michael went on to describe the event as a complete success.
"It was a very well attended event with around 250 to 300 people there. Although there were a lot of local people present, there were also many who travelled from around the country.
"A Republican band from Portadown called Pride of Erin and a 13 man colour party helped make the event a great success."
The event marked the fiftieth anniversary of the deaths of IRA volunteers James Crossan and Patrick McManus who died near Swanlibar.
RSF President Ruairí ó Brádaigh stated: "Men such as McManus and Crossan had time to prove themselves on different levels of service. Their true successors today are those who reject the British colonial statelet north of this line of the border and the collaborationist state south of it and who stand by the All-Ireland Republic of Tone, Pearse and Connolly."

This was the front page of the local free newspaper the Cavan Echo on Friday last. Now I dunno exactly what the DVLA is supposed to hav done but this development and its like would worry me.As events showed in the last few months around the Fermanagh border that there are still some people (hopefully a small number of eejits) who do not want peace in the North.Maybe somebody on here knows more about the CIRA and Republican Sinn Fein and its aims and motives but in this day and age and the way the Peace process has developed,I would hope that these kind of events are isolated.
Anybody have any views?

Isn't Patrick McManus the son of Sinn Feins Sean McManus who stood for election in Sligo. Even by republican Sinn Fein standards it seems odd that they are claiming him for one of their own.

I doubt if it's actually driving instructors or examiners they have in mind. More likely it's DVLA staff who might be assisting the PSNI with identifying stolen cars and false numberplates etc, maybe even expired tax discs or smuggled vehicles?
Which would make them legitimate targets, all right... >:(
