Lads,
I have Norton on my work Laptop for the past year. It is due for renewal soon. I find it slows my machine so much that i am thinking of changing. Have any of you in the I.T business any suggestions. I dont mind having to pay for it. Thanks.

Try BitDefender or Kapersky.

AVG or AVAST seem pretty good and are free.

i use it and it seems fine, updates at log up, if it starts a scan evertime you startup, turn that option off.

if i remember right........

click on scheduler on main screen, then click on schedule tasks

either delete the option or change to a time your PC is not on.

its that long ago i done it i cant really remember so correct me if i am wrong.

Scanning takes about an hour an a half on mine, so I have it scheduled for 4 a.m. and I leave the computer on all the time (I know - beat me to death with 'save the planet' placards). As Jack says, there's  an option to scan at startup if the scheduled scan is missed, so that's what you want to kill. On my (free) version:

Test Center
Scheduler
Select 'Test Plan in Basic Mode'
Edit Schedule
Uncheck 'If missed, start immediately ...'

Does it need to update and scan everyday (as mine seems to do)?
When you say leave the computer on over night, don't mind doing it the odd time but every-night!

doesnt need to scan everyday.

i just do a manual scan every week or less.

mine updates everytime at startup, doesnt take very long, im sure you can turn this option off also and do it manually, i will check now.

EDIT - in scheduler do the same thing as the hardy posted only for the update schedule

Hardy

Probably don't need to scan every day, since it's supposed to be protecting you real time anyway, but I'm a belt and braces and hands in pockets man when it comes to this stuff. However, I do think it's wise to update every day, otherwise you risk being caught with new viruses. As Jack says, it takes less than a minute.

I'm with Gaoth Dobhair Abu, I curse the day I installed AVG on the PC at home. Damn nearly destoryed the machine.
