ARMAGH HARPS WEEKLY NOTES

MINORS – Following Pearse Ogs decision not to contest the Minor All County League Final scheduled for Sunday Armagh Harps have been crowned League Champions. Well done to the this squad  in what has been a tremendous year!!  The presentation of the Minor League Cup and medals will take place in the Club this Saturday night at 9.30. Come along and support the lads and acknowledge their tremendous achievements!!!!

Due to work commitments successful 2011Manager Ciaran Loughran has indicated he will not be available to continue with the Minors in 2012. The Club wishes to acknowledge Ciaran's work with the Minors in recent years and in particular the magnificent achievements in 2011.   

Former Harps player and senior manager Dominic Clarke has been appointed Minor Manager for 2012. We wish Dominic and his team well.
   

UNDER 6 – Training for this age group is held on Thursday night at Lisanally sports hall, 6-7pm. Great to see so many of our children from local primary schools "having a ball" at these fantastic, cool sessions. Parents in particular seem to be enjoying these sessions and are becoming actively involved with the fundamentals of the games. Harps officials are also delighted to see so many attending from traditionally non-GAA communities. Outdoor sessions start Sunday 15 April on the JD pitch, 10.30-12 noon.

UNDER 8 – This training also takes place on Thursday night and follows the under 6's, 7-8pm. These children are enjoying excellent coaching sessions in a safe and fun environment. They are being expertly coached and are developing their handling, striking and kicking skills. Outdoor sessions start Sunday 15 April on the JD pitch, 10.30-12 noon.

UNDER 10 GIRLS AND BOYS – Training continues each Tuesday at St Patrick's Grammar School, 6-7pm to end of March. Outdoor sessions commence on the JD pitch on Sunday 15 April 10-30-12 noon. Children are asked to bring along £1 to cover costs.

UNDER 12 BOYS – Training starts outdoor on JD pitch 7-8pm from Wednesday 21 March. Children are asked to bring along £1 to cover costs.

UNDER 14 BOYS – Training continues at midday on Sunday at Abbey Park on the JD pitch. Team management includes Donal Sheridan, Conor Moore, current senior players Neil McArdle and Stephen McAneney, and former Harps and Armagh player John Toner. New players are always welcome.

UNDER 16 BOYS – Juvenile training continues at Abbey Park on the JD pitch and this year they are being taken by senior players Ebby Toal and Simon Lennon, along with Paul Rath and Sean Hart.  Once again all new players are welcome and the next training session is on Thursday 8 March on the JD pitch at 7.00pm.

SENIORS - Preparation for the new season continues. Harps play in Division One this year and begin the season with a home match against Maghery on the1st April - your support is appreciated.

UNDER 14 GIRLS – Training on Tuesdays in Abbey Park from 6-7pm on the JD pitch. All new players welcome.

UNDER 16 GIRLS – Training on Wednesdays in Abbey Park from 6.30-7.30pm on the JD pitch.  All new players welcome.

GAELIC FOR MOTHERS - This continues each on Monday night on the JD pitch at 7.30pm. All mothers are welcome to come along for these very popular fun sessions.

SOCIAL CLUB
Saturday 24 March – Colin "Tickles" Woods, lead singer of well known North West folk band Raglan Road, will be performing solo. Colin is a talented guitarist and has strummed with top folk/rock bands The Furys, Bagatelle and Dublin City Ramblers. His band has toured Belgium, Italy, and Germany and will be returning to Germany in August. Over St Patrick's week they will be playing venues in Bolton, Blackburn and Manchester. Colin also played for Harps at all levels through to Senior and represented the County at Minor and U-21. Come along on Saturday 24 March to hear him perform.

The All County Minor League trophy and medals will be presented at this function also.

ST PATRICK'S DAY PARADES – The Club was represented in both the "Scouts" parade and the "Council" parade on St Patrick's Day.  A big thanks to all those who took part- the lads made sure they were heard and recognised and were warmly applauded by on-lookers.

A special thanks also to Under 10 player Mark O'Hare who represented the Club at the "Blessing of the Shamrock" Mass and read a bidding prayer. Well done Mark!

ABBEY WHEELERS - From this Sunday 25th March, there will be 2 cycling groups going from the Harps Social Club at 9am, for regulars and for newcomers / leisure group.  Everyone is welcome, experienced cyclists will be there to ride with the newcomers group.  This is open to anyone capable of cycling around 20 miles.

Armagh Harps /Abbey Wheelers Annual Cycle

We have provisionally arranged our cycling fundraising ride this year for Saturday 18th August. 

The Route this year is from Armagh to Carrick on Shannon (80-85miles), exact route to be confirmed, but the route will likely be Armagh – Monaghan – Clones – Belturbet – Mohill – Carrick on Shannon.

As with previous years we would like every participant to raise £100 and cover the costs of their accommodation (rates tbc).  There will be Vehicle and Mechanical support throughout the cycle (and to take the bikes home), with regular food and hydration stops.

UNDER 6 to UNDER 12 - The very successful 10 week "Winter Programme" has now ended.  Well done to all who participated!!!! Both players and mentors will now have a well deserved break until training resumes on the JD pitch at Abbey Park on Sunday 15 April. The outdoor Sunday morning sessions will start at 10.30 am and finish at 11.45 am.  Looking forwarding to seeing you all after the Easter break! New boys and girls are always welcome!

UNDER 16 BOYS – The juveniles started their campaign last Thursday and lost out to Clann Eireann by a score of 5-12 to 2-9. The under 16 management and players would like to congratulate their colleague Brian McAnenly on winning the All Ireland under 15 handball competition over the Easter period. Well done and a proud day for Dad Sean and Mum Clodagh.

MINORS –The Minor League has commenced. Best of luck to Dominic Clarke and the lads for the campaign.
     
SENIORS – The Seniors played two matches in the past week. Culloville scored an injury time free to snatch a draw last Sunday.  The lads though overcame this disappointment with a great five point victory in Lurgan against Clann Eireann on Wednesday night. This Sunday they have a home game against Clan na Gael -throw in 2.00 pm.

UNDER 14 GIRLS – The girls opened their Feile campaign with a win over Dromintee and now meet favourites Clann Eireann in the semi-final.

UNDER 16 GIRLS – Training on Wednesdays in Abbey Park from 6.30 pm -7.30 pm on the JD pitch.  All new players welcome.

MINOR AND SENIOR LADIES – Minor ladies begin their league campaign on Monday 23 April against Silverhill. The seniors begin their campaign tomorrow, 21 April in Abbey with a match against Clann Eireann.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY – The committee, members and players of Armagh Harps deeply regret to learn of the death of Mary Kelly, sister of our esteemed member Jim Ryan and mother of our fellow gael and Chairman of Cuchullains Hurling club, Jimmy Kelly. Deepest sympathy is extended to them and to Mary's grandson Paul Kelly who is on our senior panel.

UNDER 10 - This Sunday sees the start of the eagerly awaited Under 10 All County League. The boys and girls are away to Crossmaglen - throw-in 11.30. Good luck!!!

UNDER 12 - The All County League begins Saturday 5 May with a home clash against Pearse Og. Come along and give the boys your support!

UNDER 14 BOYS – The League continues next Tuesday night with a home tie against St Peters.

UNDER 16 BOYS – It's Championship time for the Juveniles on Thursday night, 3 May. The boys are home to St Peters at 7.00 pm.   

MINORS – The Minor league continues next Monday night with a home match against Grange.

RESERVE - Harps started the All County Reserve League last week with a well deserved win, despite the horrendous conditions, against Clan na Gael. The campaign continues on Wednesday 2 May at 7.15 pm with a home game against Sarsfields.

SENIORS – For the second time this season an injury time free snatched victory from the Seniors. Morale remains high for this week's home fixture against Ballymacnab. Note the throw-in is 7.15 pm this Friday night 4 May.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY – The committee, members and players of Armagh Harps deeply regret to learn of the deaths of member Rosaleen Corvan (nee Agnew) and Hugh McGeown, grandfather of senior player Jarlath Crilly. Sympathies are extended to both families.

CYCLE - Abbey Wheelers are planning this year's cycle to Carrick-on -Shannon. Cyclists should inform Tony Kelly of their interest.

ARMAGH HARPS WEEKLY NOTES


UNDER 6 & UNDER 8 - Due to First Communion for St Patrick's Primary School, training this morning, Sunday 20, was postponed. We trust all the children and parents had a great day.

Training will resume on Sunday 27 in Abbey Park from 10.30-11.45. The large numbers of participants, including parents, are thoroughly enjoying the sessions.  New attendees welcome.

UNDER 10 -Again due to First Communion this morning, the game against local rivals Pearse Og scheduled for Sunday morning at Abbey Park was postponed. Next session Sunday 27 May.

UNDER 12 - An excellent win away to Naomh Eoin last Saturday. The next game is home to Clans on 26 May.

UNDER 14 BOYS – Tuesday 15 May is Championship time with an away tie against St Peters.

UNDER 16 BOYS – Thursday sees one of three ties against Pearse Og opposition this week. The Under 16s are away. 

MINORS – Following Monday night's match against the Ogs the League has now split. New fixtures will be out on 21 May. 
     
RESERVE - The reserves unfortunately lost at home to Granemore in the first round of the Championship on Wednesday night last. Hard luck lads.
 
SENIORS – The Seniors recorded an excellent nine point win away to Wolfe Tones on Sunday. However they were somewhat unfortunate to fall to St Pats, in Cullyanna on Friday night, by a single point.   

Note forthcoming Senior fixtures are home to Killeavy at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 23 May, and away to Dromintee at 7.30pm on Saturday 2 June
   
UNDER 14 GIRLS – The girls had a great victory over Killeavy last week in Abbey Park They worked tirelessly for 60 minutes and showed a great display of determination and skill on the pitch. Great scores from the forward line was backed up by excellent defensive work from all the backs and keeper - well done to all the girls. Training Continues Every Sunday Morning at 11.45am in Abbey Park.

UNDER 16 GIRLS – These girls had a great win over St Endas last week. The game was very competitive and the girls fought to the end ensuring a great display of football by both teams. Well done girls! Training on Wednesdays in Abbey Park from 6.30 - 7.30pm on the JD pitch.  All new players welcome.

MINOR GIRLS - The Minor girls had an excellent win over Pearse Og in Abbey Park last week. Some great saves from Cliodhna McKay and some excellent scores from Eimear Grimley, Kerrie Grimley and Kellyann Conlon were vital.  Michelle Morgan and Emma Fields worked tirelessly in midfield, delivering some great balls into the forward line. An excellent goal scored by Rachel McGeown lifted the Harps and put them in front. Great defensive work also by Abbie Quigley, Maureen O'Hara, Nadia Knipe and Shannon McKeever . They all worked extremely hard for a well deserved win. Next Minor game on Monday 28 May, away to Dromintee. Training continues Monday/Thursday's at 6.30pm.

SENIOR LADIES – The Seniors had a very tough victory over Killeavy last week putting on a great display of football. The girls worked solid for 60 minutes slowing down Killeavy's attack with great defensive work by all of the backs and some excellent saves from Kellyann Conlon.  The midfield and forward line worked tirelessly setting up scores and as usual between these two teams the game isn't over until the final whistle but Harps managed to hold their lead and win by a point; well done to all the girls. Armagh Harps also travelled to Carrickcruppen and Crossmaglen losing narrowly. Valuable experience was gained though! Training Continues Monday and Thursday Night 6.30pm Abbey Park.

LOYALTY CARD SCHEME - The new "Loyalty Card Scheme" which is exclusively available to members will be introduced next month. Each member will receive a personalised unique electronic card which will entitle the holder to concessionary drink prices in the Social Club. Non-card holders will pay a higher price. An additional bonus is that members can lodge monies to the card account and receive further concessions when certain thresholds are met.

"Armagh Friends of Africa" are hosting a fun table Quiz on Friday 1 June to raise much needed funds for their next project. Come along and enjoy the craic while helping a very worthy cause. Questions begin 9pm. 

CYCLE - Abbey Wheelers have confirmed this year's cycle to Carrick-on –Shannon will take place on Saturday 1 September. Cyclists should inform Tony Kelly of their interest.

BINGO - Continues every Monday at 8.30pm.

GOLF - A mini-Golf Classic has been scheduled for Loughgall Park on Sunday 3 June. Slots are limited (Tee-off from 12-2pm) and will be offered on a first come first served basis. Only £22 for golf and meal- served in the Social Club. Contact Brendan Powell on 07801857789 for a tee-time. 

WEEKEND FESTIVAL - "Armagh Friends of Africa" will host a weekend festival to support fundraising on the JD pitch weekend15-17 June.  Entertainment will include a country and western night and "School around the Corner".

ABBEY LOTTO – Tonight's jackpot is a massive £3,330. To be in with a chance of collecting the weekly jackpot, ensure you have a lotto ticket bought - only £1 each!!!

SUMMER CAMPS -  Following the success of previous camps Harps will provide a summer camp for everyone from under 6 -14. The Club will also host Kelloggs Cul Camp from 30 July to 3 August.

OLYMPIC TORCH - The Armagh leg Olympic Flame torch run will begin at Armagh Rugby Club at 2.45pm on 5 June. The route will include Mall East.  Armagh City and District Council will be providing a family fun atmosphere on the Mall.  The Council encourages Clubs to use this as an opportunity to showcase the Club by wearing club colours.     

SYMPATHY - Club members were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of former under age player Peter McAneney last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time. The Club also offers its sympathies to the McArdle family on the death of prominent Gael 'Geraldo'.  Mary Queen of the Gael have mercy on them.
