Been a civil war since 1991, probably before Armagh18 was born, it's a pretty brutal civil war too, god knows what atrocities have went on but not the best media war to cover

Kip is a bit strong, people were better educated than many places and there was decent infrastructure. But there is no doubt that the economy had not moved on from the early 90s owing to corruption. Ukraine got caught between two stools, it ended up independent but with considerable continued malign interference from Russia. Places like Poland or Lithuania could aspire to join the EU, which required getting organised, and Poland in particular had an independent approach from the Solidarność period. Then when they did get a plan to start the process for joining the EU, which was a threat to the corruption, Putin told Yanukovych not to sign it and seized Crimea and much of the Donbas. While corruption is hard to eradicate, the present changes have sent Ukraine in a better direction if they can stop Russia invading it.
