With all the drug related murders it's easy to become immune to the horrors of another killing.

However this murder is truly very sad and my thoughts are with her parents, she was la onely child and it must be very hard for them.

Hopefully they'll catch the basta*d that did this sooner rather than later  >:(

A man has appeared before Galway District Court charged with the murder of Swiss teenager Manuela Riedo.

The 27-year-old unemployed father of one has been remanded in custody to be appear in court again next Friday.

The murder investigation by Galway Gardai yesterday led to the arrests of three men and one woman, all in their 20s.

Three were released without charge, but this morning, 27-year-old Gerard Barry, with an address at 187 Rosán Glas, Rahoon, Galway, was charged with the teeanger's murder.

Mr Barry was jeered by locals as he was escorted into Galway District Court.

Onlookers voiced their anger at the murder of Manuela Riedo by directing calls of shame at Mr Barry on the steps of the courthouse.

At Galway District Court this morning, Judge Mary Fahey remanded Gerard Barry in custody to Castlerea Prison and he will appear before Harristown District Court next Friday, October 25th, at 10.30am.

Really looks like they have got their man. CCTV footage places him at the scene. Alibis didnt add up as to his wherabouts.
Investigated recently regarding another attack in area.
Hopefully DNA will give them the final proof.
Cops have to be commended in this instance if they manage to get a conviction this quickly.

That might just come back to haunt them.

Do these people not think of the consequences of their actions?
Locked up for years as the world goes about its business.
Lordhave mercy on her soul and I hope he realises what he has done and has to live with it.

Whatever about being locked up for years, how could someone live with themselves after doing something like that? One can adapt to one's physical conditions to some extent, but you cannot escape your conscience. I guess people like that are just callous sociopaths.

Ah Mannox I think your applying your standard of intelligence, common sense and decency to people who are at a far lower level of conciousness or expectation from life.

I hope the Gardai have got their man, and if they have they are to be commended. I know we should expect the same level of investigation for every crime, but I do find things like this particularly upsetting, especially against visitors to our country or those at either end of the age spectrum.

RIP Manuela.

Doogie Browser

This was a heinous crime and always seems more galling when a tourist is involved as you take it as a personal attack on us all as a country.
Was nice touch that the Galway Mayor, County Manager and various Cllr's made the trip to the funeral, lets them show we stand by them as a family at this time
Whenever they convict the scum for this terrible murder they deserve to be locked up for the rest of their life, forget about remission or crap like that.

Not his first offence from what I hear. Some of you may have taken me up wrongly,I am totally for a long term in jail. The thing is the guy will not even blink when charged.
He may have other members of family that have less than shining histories from what I have heard.

In instances like this it really is quite easy to be persuaded of the merits of the death penalty. Apart from the unimaginable  grief and loss of the poor girl's family, what does this do for Ireland's reputation abroad?

Also, it is obvious that whoever she was staying with must have pointed out the so called short cut route into Galway to her and advised her to use it. It strikes me as being silly to say the least to advise any young females, particularly those from a foreign land, to travel alone along secluded routes that are not well lit
