Quote from: tram on September 24, 2007, 05:42:10 PMThe question about Belgium splitting would be would the French and Flemish halves (not to mention the tiny German speaking zone) just simply go on their own or would they seek to integrate with France & the Netherlands?

I knew a very nationalistic Fleming in college who said Wallonia would go in with France while Flanders would stay independent rather than throw in their lot with the godless Calvinists.

Just one point of view.

Would agree. Spent all my time there in Brugge in the Flemish region, and not one of them I met wanted integration with the Dutch, they held them in, at best, mild distain. As for Wallonia, I wouldn't think so, I get the feeling they have "abandonment issues" with France.

"Abandonment issues" - excellent!

You might be right. If the Walloons are that exercised by matters of religious identity, they might find the Fifth Republic a cold house. And didn't the French traditionally treat Belgian jokes the same way the English treated Irish jokes?

Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.
