Right would be managers:
test no 1:
The scenario: You are 2 points up with 5 minutes to go in a very tense championship first round game contest  and the opposition no 6 strikes, Bang, off he goes straight red.
Background:  They are cup holders with a formidable attack and a 6 '5 full forward and oodlums of experience.  2 nippy corner forwards one who has been kept out of the game so far, but they are experienced.  You are managing a very inexperienced team who have been playing out of their shirts.
Quandary:
Rhythm of the game will be upset by the loss of the number 6 who has been their best player so far.  How do you choose to close it out with the extra man?

depends on what the opposition do in terms of re-alignment

if as all managers do, they bring back one of their players to play in Def
and shuffle the rest leaving a 2 man FF line
I'd leave the same men marking their original opponents and deploy a man in front of the FB lineto close down any runs made towards goal, and to help double team the big FF (if he's any use).
I already would have a third midfielder out around the middle of the field, with two fast wing half forwards dropping deep and racing back up the lines again.

So effectively all I would do is keep the same structure, and initially align the loose CB to play free in front of the FB line.

or if you are the Derry senior manager
take off your most effective forward, leave on the defenders being roasted and chalk it all down to bad luck but great team effort

withdraw a forward to double the 6'5 targetman
Use the free man,No 11 as a sweeper behind the half back line,
leaving 8 defenders against 5 forwards,as no doubt they will have switched a man back to play centre half.
and close up the game.

not a bit

v Dublin

bull shite he did not take off Paddy Bradley. Murphy was playing well, but he was not our most eddective forward. If he had of taken Bradley off instead of Murphy, then the shit would really have hit the fan.

ExiledGael

Was Murphy not carrying a pretty painful injury in any case??

hoopsaaa

Get your centre half foward to take their full foward out Only joking :D

Stick the centre half foward in front of the full foward line and let him play as a sweeper.

If your two points up against a FF line like that then you must have been doing something that is working to be ahead so the first thing is to make sure that your team keeps doing what it is doing

The trick is to think like you are the guys with the man down and that they have to do the same job as they have been doing only work harder.

In that case don't go bringing a spare HF back into defence where he most likely hasn't a clue and will only get in the way or don't go shifting people all around to create a 'free back' or changing every line of the team and the whole shape 'cos that will get everybody thinking that they can do a different job, that they might not know, or might not cop onto straight away or that they can ease off 'cos there is a spare man around.

I'd concentrate the extra man in the MF area to win / keep the ball there and restrict the supply of ball that could be hit in the direction of that FF line. If the game is that tight and you drop an extra man back, the game inevitably starts to get played inside your 45 and when one score could put you behind, possibly with no time left, that is exactly where you don't want to be. The other side of having the extra man in the MF area is that a ball or two won going forward will drive a stake through your opponents hearts and an extra score at that stage will feel like two - psychologically and literally as it will mean that they have to score at least twice to win.

So in summary, drop your CF back a little towards the middle but concentrate the spare man on keeping the ball at the other end of the field rather than trying to defend the slim margin at your own end.

longball

If they reshuffle and leave ur CB free take him off and put on another forward sending him into ur forward line- surly the opposition will be forced to move another man back to deal with this new threat thus leaving them with just 4 forwards against 5 defenders!

Replace your full back and keeper with 2 forwards and really go for it!
