Japan has just rejected a ship load of Northern Irish Pork  :o
It should be on the BBC website somewhere.

NI meat exports are exempt from the UK ban
A shipment of pork from County Tyrone was stopped from entering Japan despite the European Union's decision to exempt NI meat exports from the UK ban.
The meat was sent from Grampian Foods in Cookstown.

Hugh McReynolds, the firm's managing director, said it was not good news for Northern Ireland's pig farmers.

"It is worrying because we are coming from a backdrop where grain prices are rising steadily and pig farmers are in a very difficult situation," he said.

On Monday, Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew's confirmed that Northern Ireland is to be allowed to continue to export meat and dairy products.

The government has imposed a ban on the movement of livestock in England, Scotland and Wales.

Northern Ireland has imposed a ban on all cattle, sheep and pigs from Britain, but there are currently no restrictions on the movement of livestock within NI and across the border.

A temporary ban has also been placed on the import of fresh meat and unpasteurised milk from the rest of the UK.

Disinfected mats have also been installed at airports and seaports through which all passengers and vehicles entering the province must travel.

Bloody googlemaps at it again, colouring the north-eastern part of this island pink as opposed to the bigger green bit.

Is it me or is it not in the realms of possibility that anyone walking over these mats at local airports or ports may have a second, or third, pair of shoes in their bag which they wore in England but didn't on the return journey home......

Depends what gender they are! Double it for females and halve the number for males.
If at first you don't succeed, then goto Plan B

As far as I'm aware, it has no actual detrimental effect regarding human consumption and most other countries actually vaccinate against it. From an Irish point of view, we don't vaccinate and thus can be justified in saying that our meat products are of a higher natural quality. Think the british are one of the few countries which also don't vaccinate against it.

If you want to import to the us you cant vaccinate. I think all EU countries dont vaccinate as a norm but the Dutch did so back in 2002 for a small number .
Anyway, long story short... is a phrase whose origins are complicated and rambling.
