His autobiography is a great read, lucky enough to have a signed copy

Went on record as saying he used the National League as a ball stealing exercise, I love the divergent thinking, looking at things from perspectives others wouldn't consider, and funny to boot

RIP Mick O'Dwyer
One of the greatest characters the GAA has ever produced.
Will be very fondly remembered.

Fogarty

Micko had a tremendous impact in Wicklow. He was one of the few managers who get Wicklow to play to their potential.

Yes I heard that before. Heard it said there were O'Neill's Footballs  at Kerry training  marked with  all sorts of county names :D

Legend the apt word for Mick'O... in his book Pat Spillane said that Kerry team with another manager might have won 4/5 All Irelands... Dwyer motivated them to 8. Was remarkable after late goal defeats in '82 and '83 (Cork.. Munster final) he took them to another 3-in-a-row. The football they played was spellbinding during that era.
Not sure which book it was... maybe King's of September' about the 1982 All Ireland final, told how O'Dwyer was devastated by that defeat, stopped them get 5-in-a-row.. he came to terms with it when the great Matt Connor of Offaly had a car crash that put him in a wheelchair. Mick O'Dwyer then said he was glad Connor got that All Ireland medal.
He was the best ever football manager, no doubt. RIP

When I was a very young impressionable lad, Kerry were THE team and he was THE manager of the time.  They had an aura of invincibility about them and he was some man to keep them all motivated for as long as he did.  With a small bit of luck, they could have done 9 in a row!! A loveable rogue and one of the iconic personalities of the GAA that will be forever remembered long after we are all gone.

Rest in Peace, Micko. A GAA Statesman. Certainly a man for whom the phrase "Ní Bheidh A Leithéid Ann Arís" was crafted. Everything seems better in nostalgia. Summers were warmer. Tayto tasted better. The girls all admired us playing air guitar in the townhall disco. And football, too. But Micko's Kerry team transcended that. They were better. Egan, Sheehy, Power, the Bomber... Of course it will be a constant source of agony that we did not win in 1980, made all the more painful by Micko saying, that was the one All-Ireland his great Kerry team should have lost (with of course that famous Kerry sting - if ye kept playing football). Rest in peace, Mick O'Dwyer. We won't see your likes again.

Had the great pleasure many years ago of spending an evening in his company when he was guest of honour at our club centenary dinner and I had to chauffeur him to and from the event.  Give us some stick for only just regaining senior status but more for having our dinner in Tyrone.  A real character.  I still remember his speech that night and how his happiest days in GAA involved Waterville.

Unfortunately for him Waterville got relegated either that year or the next but I remember he sent a letter to the club about it thanking us for having him and wishing he'd not claimed Waterville would always be a senior club.  A great wit and charm to him.  I'm sure he will be sorely missed

In my personal opinion he's the greatest manager of all time and he did it all with a twinkle in his eye.

his only competition would be Jim Gavin I would imagine. Some good managers over the years but not many in that league. Only other one I would say which many would frown upon would be Harte.

Fogarty

When Jim Gavin goes and manages other counties outside of Dublin to success, then he can come back and be compared.

Meet him twice from what I remember, book signing in cookstown many years ago and again at a Dublin game in the mid 90's.Total gentleman who no problem making conversion. He alot taller than you think. Was a very good footballer but always remembered for his management of a great Kerry team and bringing success to Kildare and Laois. His only comparison  is Cody who again I met 1 time, but def different personalities.
