Well I'd imagine releasing your players for a competition with a bit of prestige and honour would be easier swallowed than a competition where people are asking who's playing who here the day before the games are down to be played on GAA website. Going the way of the railway cup when treated like that

It's not going the way of the Railway Cup.

The Sigerson always was and always will be a competition for players rather than supporters.

It's the single highest grade of football available to any footballer aside from senior inter county. For players from 20+ counties it represents the best chance of their lives to win a Grade A championship, the kind of honour that makes other top players regard them as a player of note.

This ultimately is the key to the competition. PR, marketing, venues and playing conditions, attendances, media coverage, weather  these things are all fluff. The prestige is inbuilt.

Its a great competition that and the hurling one.. They need to be though over a weekend at one venue, semi's and finals  be some buzz about the place, held at a chosen college, they used to do that, players can be freed up if they are county lads and back with the county teams.. Its the dates that need sorting

There are now 16 colleges in sigerson now as opposed to 8 when it was a weekend competition

But surely they could play through the first couple of rounds as they do now, get it down to the last 8 and play it on the first free NFL weekend (this year that would be this weekend)

For 50% of the players, it will only be one game anyway but imagine the football all played at one venue/college/town over the 3 days....personally I think they need to start and reconsider that type weekend again. Then get the PR - social media - profile all properly managed and get the competition the prestige it deserves.

The way the format/calendar is at the moment it is only diluting the competition especially when players are under pressure from all sides....let them play sigerson as first priority.

The format of the draw is actually a very good one - think the All Ireland series this year is the exact same idea.

AI junior county football semi finals Friday, final Sunday, they're not classed as elite yet seem to manage, maybe its because they're not elite that they can manage? Who'd've thunk it

The weekend concept was abandoned, years ago, not out of concern about player welfare, but because the general behaviour had become completely out of hand over the years. Putting several hundred completely drunken students into a hotel on a Sunday night & trying to feed them had become ahem....quite a challenge. I think the GAA stepped in & knocked it all on the head, as the reputational damage mounted lol.
