Was the minor hurling set up really that bad?
It was a funny appointment to start with, but results were middle of the road really.
Next years team should be stronger?
Will that group be stifled by current management?

I finally think I tracked down the record.
From what I can see laois have never won division 3 Celtic challenge.
They have won division 4 on a couple of occasions and never played at a higher level than division 3. It appears that this is set before the start of the competition ??
Laois team that won had 5 chaps 15 years of age and 5 16 year of age rest are at the last year of minor.
As for the ineligible player he is one of the 16s drafted into the minor panel at the last minute he is certainly not named on the minor panel . The word I got was lenister gaa him the ok to play but mayo objected at last minute.
It again come back to the shite show of the minor hurling set up..how many u16-15 year old played for 15 minutes and had there season finished not eligible to play for the rest of season.

The ineligible player was on the minor panel and had also played in at least one minor game in the Leinster Championship scoring a point

The rules were very clear

You come on in the minor championship, you can't play in the Celtic Challenge

I see our U14 hurlers with good results on Saturday, qualifying for the Forrestall tournament in Waterford

Where did you find their results? Do we know what level they'll be playing at in Tony Forristal this year?

Beat Limerick A and Tipp West and drew with a Cork squad. I reckon it's the first Laois squad to be playing A competition in a while. Massive work being put in by the management. Results shouldn't be the main focus at this stage but its great to be competitive all the same.

Laois team narrowly beaten in the Forristal semi final 3/4 years ago by a Tipp team who went on and won it out that year

Great to see this team making similar progress

A lot of work has been put in

Good to hear some positivity around them, and I agree, its competitiveness and standards we should be looking at, moreso than results. I think u14 and the likes is very hard for counties like ourselves to take on and beat the big guns. It can simple come down to a numbers game at that age. We should however, hope to be well coached and set up with good fundamentals in place.

Good Coaching, Good positive & happy environment, well organised set up by all accounts,
Great for Laois teams to be hurling at that level to be making progress

Agreed Ottoman, great to have positivity around the squads to build on going forward again.

Always great to hear of a good squad of players competing well against the bigger counties. We need to try and continuously produce good groups more than most.

Are the Laois Gaels group making a difference as they seem to be providing gear etc for the underage set ups. I am sure they are doing more than that but a good addition to have providing support to the underage groups.

I'm sure the Laois Gaels are deserving of some support but the management team over that U14 team are key. I can't speak for their coaching but they're good, honest, genuine people who have Laois Hurling's best interests at heart. And crucially, there's a depth to the management team so no one individual is shouldering too much responsibility. The workload is shared which allows mentors have a summer holiday or weekend away without everything shutting down.

If we can establish that standard of set-up as the norm rather than the exception, we'll have a chance of seeing progress. It's a given in most counties.

And, it's worth mentioning that the secondary benefit to the Setanta Programme may well be developing a pool of possible coaches for future years.

The coaching and set up that's now in place at this grade. Is this anything to do with Shane Keegan's new role within the county? I only ask as I was talking to a friend of his last year after he took on the role, and I get the impression he was less than impressed / slightly shocked at some of the set up's among some of the under age squads!

Chrimtain

I wonder how the football underage panels are progressing since Shane Keegan's involvement?

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. This is the first update I've had on any panel.

I've mentioned here before, I don't know him that well, but I worked with Shane a few years back on another project with a different code, and he's a very serious operator IMO. Laois are lucky to have him within this role. My one fear is though, that he will have enough of dealing with the Laois County Board before any potential huge strides can be made.

Who is over this Under 14 team?

Trevor Moore, of Borris/ Kilcotton I thought? Also Eric Killeen and Shane Cahill involved - and a couple of others who I can't remember off the top of my head. Being well looked after by all accounts. Should have beaten Cork, I heard; it was 0-15 to 3-6, and the three Cork goals were jammy enough.
