Joe strummer in all his incarnations, some of the stuff with the Mescaleros was great!

Oh Christ, really?  :o

do not fear I come from a planet a long way from here And I bring a message for mankind to hear

And suddenly the sweetest music filled the air

And it went la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la
Is the ref going to finally blow his whistle?... No, he's going to blow his nose

It's funny in a way, when you think about it- there's a finite number of major bands or artists that would have universal appeal, and then things taper down into niches.  I'm not sure about using the idea of selling out Croke Park as a yardstick to measure scale or appeal.  The beauty of bands or singers or songs is how they anchor us back in our youth or different milestones or memories.
The landscape of music and radio is so very different now compared with my teen years listening to mainly mainstream radio stuff,  and then finding so many genres through college.  I find it fascinating that more and more kids in school now are into their 80s/ 90s alt rock: a first year read out songs on his Spotify playlist, a lot of them have featured here before.
Anyhow,  enough rambling.  Some good options coming up, by the looks of things, but I'll definitely be tuning out for Christy Moore!

I guess my point about Croke Park is in how I have always interpreted what this thread should be.

The internet is knee deep with avenues for those who "get" music to have deep and meaningfuls with others who "get" music.

Whereas the GAAboard is a commune where middle aged men (and some women) have been brought together by a common love of the Gaelic Games we used to play, and have too much free time to discuss. Us having a discussion about music should be about as high brow as when a music lovers' forum discuss their favourite footballers. To equate, they could all pile into a conversation about Michael Darragh McAuley, but most of them would struggle to remember Paul Clarke. MDMA wasn't at Clarke's levels. But it matters none; it's the floor fillers who enable the conversation and keep it going. Once it becomes a specialist subject, it's too niche to relate.

So keep it low brow, that's what I say.
