Belfast is getting prohibitively dear to drink in. £6 is near enough cheap for a pint in the city centre. Seems to range from £6 to £6.60. I was away in Portugal the other week and 2 pints was costing me the same as 1 in belfast (ok 500 ml but not that big a difference).

Belfast has since Covid become the most expensive place in Ireland to go drinking. Yet try getting a hotel room in it on a Saturday evening.

The publicans/conglomerates have won this round. No point in arguing otherwise.

Was in the Hewitt couple of weeks ago for first time in about four years. Used to live in the place as office was close before company moved elsewhere in city. Not only has it turned into a craft beer pub, it's card payments only (with a wee button for tips too). At £6.50 for a pint of Guinness, how the f**k do they expect people to afford tips? Was down in Dublin for Finland game and hit Clearys as usual. 5.60 euro for a stout, which was far better quality than the Hewitt's. Next time I hear Deane or that fuckwit Colin Neill whining about how hard restaurants and pubs are suffering, they're going to get a hurling stick on the back of the canister. Belfast is becoming a joke.

My frame of reference is always that I left Belfast for college in Dublin in 2005. On nights out in town you'd pay 5e a drink in a busy bar or nightclub, whether that be a pint or a short with mixer. In a regular city centre pub (as in not student central and hopping at night) you might pay anywhere from 4.50 to 5.50 a pint. Going home to Belfast, the likes of the Bot, the Eg, the King's Head and the Errigle were all in and around the £2.50 mark for a pint. The fact that pretty much all these and similar places are £6 plus these days, while you can still get a decent pint in the centre of Dublin for under 6e, tells you everything.

Pub Bore

Hotels, pubs and restaurants in Belfast are just taking the piss.

Shed Bistro on the Ormeau Road in Belfast is charging an utter rip-off £13 for a glass of Albariño.
You could easily sit at home with an entire bottle of the stuff for that princely sum.

I do think that rates in Belfast are ridiculous and the city council are taking the piss too which doesn't help.

Like wobbler says people pay it. It's like hotels in Dublin - I don't know how anyone stays there at that cost.

Stayed midweek in the Marlin Hotel behind Stephen's Green Shopping Centre a couple of weeks ago. £90 for a double room.  I thought that was OK.

If and when things go tits up again they'll be on the news yapping about hospitality and no one going to their pubs, they'll deserve all they get. I stopped going to Dublin years ago as i refuse to be ripped off when the hotel prices went thru the roof  and now Belfast is worse, i live 25-30 mins from belfast so will never stay in a hotel there when i'm just up the road.

This isn't that unreasonable imho.

Bars for years worked on a 3:1 ratio. The owner here has gone closer to 4:1, which is within the realms of expectations for a restaurant.

Bars in Belfast currently running closer to a 8:1 ratio for putting bog standard spirits like Smirnoff and Gordon's into a glass. That's the bit that I can neither compute, afford or support.

Was in Derry City last weekend and a pint and glass of sauvignon was around a tenner in places. It was actually £9.60 for both in one establishment. Not bad value if a pint is costing around £7 in Belfast. Derry is a far better place to visit anyway regardless of the price of drink.
