Why do ye put in the needless word "straight" before knockout???.

What d'ye think of this motion

MOTION 38: This motion is that the Association shall maintain a neutral stance on any non GAA campaign movement, subject to an advocacy policy.

Play the game and play it fairly
Play the game like Dermot Earley.

Quote from: Rossfan on February 19, 2025, 03:38:58 PMSeems nobody is speaking up for the current system so you'd expect the "Sigerson" system motion to pass.
Has it to get 60%?

What's the 60% all about at Congress?

You'd think it would be 50+1.

50.1 majorities is the kind of shite policy that caused Brexit.

For rules to change there should be a clear consensus, not a whimsical desire.

What does "subject to an advocacy policy" mean? I guess the genocide in Gaza has prompted this motion...

I actually quite like the current structure, it gets at least 12 of the top teams in the country, all start on a roughly equal footing, play 3 games to fine tune, whilst we say there's no jeopardy, there is a fair difference between finishing first and finishing 3rd in your group.

The problem with this proposed structure is the same issue we've had for the past 50 years, the provinces are totally unequal.

Maybe we could weight the provinces and have the finalists in the two strongest provinces qualify, but only the winners of the two weaker provinces.
Final league placings for all entrants in that year's championship could be used to determine rankings, it would be adjusted to reflect the differing numbers of counties of course. You'd imagine Ulster and probably Connacht would be the stronger two.

MOTION 13: This motion proposal from St Mary's, Rosslare is seeking to make it mandatory for every club to field hurling teams from U7 up to U10. The only exceptions would be if a football club can show that their players are catered for by another hurling club or if you don't have sufficient numbers.

Stuff like this used to make me chortle. I know the motion means well, but the basic tenet behind it requires either a new suite of volunteers to appear out of nowhere, or existing volunteers to continue to offer their time, but putting it instead into something for which they've limited knowledge / experience / interest.

Why I no longer chortle, is that between Brexit, Covid and Trump, bat shit crazy things happen all too often these days.

Yeah I get that it's well meaning, but where are the coaches going to come from in an all football club? Something does need to be done to promote more hurling in "football" counties, but this isn't the answer.

I agree with the above.

Liam Griffin was on off the ball the other day basically saying anyone voting against it is anti-hurling. It's one of the most nonsensical motions I've ever seen.

I enjoy hurling and played a bit of it. But it's hilarious to me that hurling zealots don't get that the vast majority of Irish people have little to no interest in it or prefer other sports.
I also doubt a motion mandating football at underage level would be well received in Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford and many other Hurling dominated areas. In Cork, county board, divisional boards and GDAs actively push kids away from Football. I've experienced that first hand. Liam Griffin and Co wouldn't want to discuss that though.

Griffin is well intentioned in what he wants in wanting every child to have the opportunity to play hurling but you can't force any unit to offer it if the volunteers aren't there to support it.
It won't pass as its impossible to enforce just like the motion stipulating that county players have to play so many games for their club.

Players and coaches are volunteers and can make their own decisions how they spend their time

That's a good system to be fair isn't it?

Jeopardy to every game as they say

thewobbler

It doesn't bring jeopardy. It gives the best team(s) a second chance, and destroys pretty much any chance of a shock championship winner.

Rossfan

Championships are about finding the best team not "shock championship winners".
